Subject: BS: Willie Nelson Endorses Kucinich for Pres
From: Mark Clark
Date: 02 Jul 03 - 01:19 PM

This just showed up in my email.
STATEMENT FROM WILLIE NELSON
"I am endorsing Dennis Kucinich for President because he stands up for
heartland Americans who are too often overlooked and unheard. He has
done that his whole political career. Big corporations are
well-represented in Washington, but Dennis Kucinich is a rare
Congressman of conscience and bravery who fights for the unrepresented,
much like the late Senator Paul Wellstone. Dennis champions individual
privacy, safe food laws and family farmers. A Kucinich Administration
will put the interests of America's family farmers, consumers and
environment above the greed of industrial agribusiness.

"I normally do not get too heavily involved in politics, but this is
more about getting involved with America than with politics. I encourage
people to learn more about Dennis Kucinich at http://www.kucinich.us and
I will be doing all I can to raise his profile with voters. I plan to do
concerts to benefit the campaign."

Actually, I predict a certain number of celebrities will soon come out to endorse Kucinich, and that it will help give him a higher visibility with the media more Americans watch than any other: the entertainment "news" shows.

Then the Democratic Party will circle him like the pack of jackals that they are, and rip him to shreds, so they can crown Liberman or Gephardt the contender.

Aw c'mon Russ......As founder and CEO of the NYCFTTS and the only CEO in the country who has been known to blow up a possum's ass, I have a unique credibility and one which is sought after for endorsements. Like Willy, I too endorse Kucinich, a fellow Ohioian. I'm hoping he can erase the legacy of past presidents from here like Rutherford Hayes, U.S.Grant, William McKinley, William Howard Taft, James Garfield, the two Harrisons, and not to mention (and who wants to?) Warren G Harding ......

HEY PETER----FARM AID......The Farm Aid main page is HERE. The day for this year is September 7 at the Germain Ampitheater.

I noticed that in the MoveOn primary, Dean came in first (43.87%), then Kucinich (23.93%), then Kerry (15.73%). All the rest were in the .5 to 3% range, including Gebhardt and Lieberman. Apparently Kucinich is better known that TV media would have you believe.

Kucinich is one of the most visible and active members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus:

http://bernie.house.gov/pc/

So to the progressive segments of society he is pretty well known now, especially after the Department of Peace idea was floated.

Spaw,

You're still king of the acronyms. NYCFTTS? I don't get out much. And only then with careful supervision.

I had forgotten about all the Ohio presidents. Pretty spectacular lineup.

Actually Bush has convinced me that the lower the profile of the president the better.

You from Ohigh (WV pronunciation)? They got possums in Ohigh?

Russ, surely you remember the Neil Young Center for the Terminally Screwed!!! If not you can find it referenced all over the place here and that includes the new wing which we recently opened, the James Taylor Catatonic Blandbess Rehab Clinic. And in Ohio where we have lots of possums including my little buddy Cleigh O'Possum, the word sounds like Uh-Hi-Uh or Ahia.

KAT.....He's a straight shooter, has opposed Bush quite vocally at every turn, decent experience......If he can get enough support to be noticed, he can play well with the media. Doesn't seem to have any skeletons and very Wellstone like in his concerns. He or Dean would make good choices for the Dems and I wonder if a ticket of the two of them might not just provide a clear choice which has been lacking.

"Well, there goes Willie's invite to the Country Music Awards for this year!"

Willie was pissing off the folks at the CMA (and others like them) before many of us were aware there were politics. On the other hand, given what we know about Willie's life, he should probably be honored more for his music than his judgement.

As a sometime student of American history (being a foreigner means I have even less credibility than the locals) I think it can usually be assumed that if the economy goes completely wrong, the sitting President can be defeated, no matter how well he does otherwise. All the fanfare and the commercials are of little use in such a situation. Unemployment at 10%, and George is finished: almost anyone can beat him for the Democrats. Trouble is, who wants the American economy to go under that badly?

"We only got Alaska because we didn't want you guys bothered by Commies" - wasn't it that the Tsar was a bit short for spending money, so he flogged it cheap?

Rather like the Louisiana Purchase with Napoleon, and the Gadsden Purchase with Mexico. Are there any other countries that expanded by buying up large portions of territory?

It isn't necessarily true that if the economy is bad, that Bush can easily be defeated. If his spin machine can keep the spin off the economy and on the phantom war on terror, war on Iraq, war on the world, then no one will defeat him.

It is all about who controls the spin, not reality. Who wins has nothing to do with reality. It's about money and controlling spin.

Yeah, the phantom war. Do you folks have enough experience yet with the alerts (red, puce, green, whatever) to be able to accurately predict WHEN they will come up in the upcoming election season and what their colours might be? I can't believe that Bush won't invoke one of these at some appropriate time (say, mid-October). I'd also be interested in hearing predictions as to who the principal rogues are going to be: on offer are the usual suspects, to which add Cuba, Libya (always good for a scare or two), and maybe Burma or Yemen.

An interesting case of spin control happened in yesterday's news cycle. A bi-partisan group of senators from the Senate Intelligence Committee just returned from Iraq, and held a press conference about the state of affairs on the ground in Iraq, including the phantom WMD issue.

The Bush spinners pre-empted that press conference, in which the senators were all critical of the Bush administration's mishandling of the post-war (sic) administration of Iraq (especially the whereabouts of Hussein), and some Democrats now convinced that the WMD thing was an outright lie.

What did they pre-empt the Senate Intelligence Committee press conference with? The bounty on Saddam.

What was all over the news and papers? The Bush spin. The critical view of how it's going in Iraq? Not even mentioned.

Glad someone noticed! I thought it was extraordinarily obvious to anyone that that was what the reward nonsense was for, but no one seemed to mention it. They really are masters of spin. I still think it is impossible to spin 10% unemployment. (To which someone immediately replies, 3 million lost jobs, rejuggling of the definition of the unemployed, the prisons full of the unemployable, etc., etc., but still, there are limits).

yours,

Peter T.

No, it would take tens of thousands of American body bags to stop the latest American imperialist push. Enough American voters support globalisation, capitalist imperialism, and the US military being used to back it, for them to get their knickers in a bunch over dead poor boys.

But take away their suburban tract houses and SUVs, and you have the makings of voter revolt.

I'd say the election will be won by whoever the majority of the media and it's owners favor. Simple as that. If they favor Bush, he'll win. If they favor Dean or someone like that... Dean or someone like that will win.

I see a distinct possibility that an important segment of the media will change their allegiance for the upcoming election, if they have not already done so.

Dead on perception there, CarolC. The media has made no attempt to hide the fact that they all MUCH preferred Bush to Gore in 2000. They found him more entertaining in that Texas good ole boy sort of way. And in the American media nowadays, the media does a good job of hiding their partisan preferences under their bullshit guise of objectivity. In fact, there is a good article here about that very thing:

Are US Journalists Truly Spineless?

However, Bush has taken on the persona of the grim reaper since 9/11. He is stiff, rarely candid because he is so scripted, and kept far away from the media (for good reason, obviously--can you say "bring it on"?). How many press conferences has he had in his presidency--two or three? No, I know it is more than that, but it is probably about the lowest of any president in memory.

Bush has become a cartoon caricature. He is scripted and spun to the point where his handlers are trying to make him appear as a patriot deity of some dark sort. The image they've crafted of him since 9/11 is a gloomy, threatening, and stern patriarch. Not the good ole boy the media celebrated and Supreme Court put in the White House.

But even though a gloomy, threatening, stern patriarch obviously makes many Americans feel safe and secure, it isn't a very electable image. Rather like voting for a Bible Belt fire and brimstone preacher. So it will be interesting to see who the media backs. My guess is it will still be Bush, not only because the conservatives now have the run of the judiciary, the executive, and the legislative branches, but because the media who cover the Washington political beat feel secure being around people like themselves too--ie, conservatives. As you said, media ownership does determine who gets the most and best coverage.
