Subject: RE: Chord Req: fathers song by ewan mccoll ( Gaughan) From: Jim Carroll Date: 02 Oct 12 - 02:33 PM Jason MacColl's Song is entitled 'My Old Man', and was recorded on his album 'Kilroy Was Here' In my opinion it works perfectly without accompaniment, in fact I can't imagine it being sung with an instrument Good luck, Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: fathers song by ewan mccoll ( Gaughan) From: Jim Carroll Date: 02 Oct 12 - 02:59 PM Apologies Dave and all - forgot about that one. The same applies though - he sang it unaccompanied and that's te way it worked for me. Probably one of the tenderest songs he wrote. Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: fathers song by ewan mccoll ( Gaughan) From: Jim Carroll Date: 03 Oct 12 - 05:09 AM Saw her last year when she visited Ireland - on superb form and wowed a full house audience of people who had never heard her live before. One of the best renditions of Young Margaret(?) I have heard. Still not sold on her use of keyboards though - and the bloody thing is a hernia-risk to anyone who helps her load it in her car. Enjoy Jim Carroll |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: fathers song by ewan mccoll ( Gaughan) From: GUEST,Guest (Gaughan) Date: 03 Oct 12 - 08:41 AM "Jason, the chords are here. " Bears no resemblance to what I play :) For a start, I sing it in A, not D as that page states. Although I improvise what I play, the bare bones of it are: A Em A C D A G Bb A Em G D I omit the 3rd from the A chords as the minor 3rd weakened the song in my view. I also finish each line on a D rather than returning to the root. Hope that helps DG |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: fathers song by ewan mccoll ( Gaughan) From: GUEST,(Gaughan) Date: 03 Oct 12 - 08:44 AM "I also finish each line" Excuse the gibberish - I meant to type I finish each verse with D, not each line. |

Subject: Chords Add: THE FATHER'S SONG (MacColl/Gaughan) From: GUEST,Gerry Mulvenna Date: 04 Feb 14 - 09:51 AM I used to sing this once and was just trying to relearn it today. To fit with Dick Gaughan's key you need capo on 4th and play Am Em Am C D Am Bb Am C Em G D close to what the original poster was playing. It's the 3rd line that I struggle with, but that sequence seems to work. I used to sing it in a slightly higher key with chords (no capo) Em Bm Em G A Em F Em G Bm D A Gerry |
