Also, click on "home" or "what's on", and you will probably find other sessions of interest to you in the Manchester Literature Festival. Some are live broadcasts and even workshops, but the MacColl film can be watched at any time during the festival.

Sadly the Manchester Event is not airing the 'lost' radio ballads: 'The Iron Box' 'Off Limits' 'The Stone of Tory' 'The Jewellry' 'A Cry from the Cut' - not even 'Romeo & Juliet.' And what about the films: 'The Big Hewer' 'The Fight Game' 'The Shoals of Herring'? And what about MacColl's series 'The Song Carriers'?

The Radio Ballad films are on YouTube. All other 'missing' / 'lost' Radio Ballads listed are held privately, but they are available. Its just a pity Manchester isn't including them.

Over the years I collected the MacColl radio ballad CDs that were available and that was pretty much all we knew about them and a little bit of the history

didn't even know there were "lost" ones... it is still relatively recent that BBC made television broadcasts available to the USA and those few were only on public television stations... now we can get things like Britbox online, but very few documentaries and even fewer on music and none on traditional that I am aware of... it has been filtered to suit large general audiences - so that leaves me out lol

We have been researching a bit about The Ballad of Ewan MacColl. It appears that there are two versions one from 1990 largely on YouTube, and one from 2014. Details are here:

Ewan MacColl (1915-89) was a true 'working class hero'. Born in the backstreets of Salford, he is best known as a singer and songwriter with songs like Dirty Old Town. But he was also an accomplished actor and playwright, and with his third wife, Peggy Seeger , led the folk revival of the 50s - an international movement that has influenced singer-songwriters from Bob Dylan to Tracey Chapman.
