Both BMI and ASCAP have databases of copyrighted songs, but I can't figure out publication dates from them. Take a look - they're fascinating.

Howdy Sharon,

I figured that the ASCAP and BMI searches were what you needed. The one I've suggested here before is sort of the opposite. It deals with songs that are in the public domain. If the song(s) you are looking for copyright dates to is(are) old enough to fit that category, try http://www.bright.net/~pdinfo/ to get you started on a search for the info about them (no lyrics, but a lot of documented pd songs and great information).

Allinkausay,
Bill

THANKS BILL. THAT SOUNDED LIKE WHAT I NEEDED. I TRIED THE SITE AND THEY SAID IT'S BEEN CLOSED SINCE THAT INFO IS AVAILABLE AT SO MANY LIBRARIES!! ANY MORE IDEAS?

Howdy Sharon,

The site being closed is new to me -- the keeper of it didn't mention anything when I saw her at the beginning of June (but we didn't do a lot of talking), and I hadn't been at the site for a while. If you ask about some particular titles, I can check them in a hard copy I have from a few years ago. Other than that, check back in a while for the listing of other links that she's promising.

Allinkausay,
Bill

Bill: Thanks for you offer to help, but I have about 100 I'd like to check. Ouf folk music society is wanting to stick to music of the 20's or earlier in performances, and I need to check all the music in our current repertoire. I thought if I could find a site where I could accomplish this, I could do it in a day.

If anybody finds out how to check copyright dates, please let us all know. I suppose ASCAP and BMI will give info by e-mail on specific songs, but I wonder why they don't have more specific information that we can access directly. I checked the public domain site, and it's indeed shut down. I suppose it's expensive to maintain, but it sure was a good resource - but not one you check daily, so maybe it didn't generate enough traffice to seem worthwhile. Too bad. -Joe Offer-

Earlier on this thread (on 09 July 97) Jean requested the Library of Congress web site address - here it is: http://lcweb.loc.gov/

BTW, they also have an "American Folklife Center" home page, at http://lcweb.loc.gov/folklife/ ... haven't explored it yet though.

Howdy ML,

My cut and paste of the URL you gave turned up a "Failed to Parse" message.

When I refer back to my URL of the Public Domain Information Project, it says that it has beeen permanenetly closed because the information is available in other places.

Bill

Would this be useful? There is a link to their Copyright Resource Center.

I found it by going to Google and entering music copyright into the search box.

Here's the one that I've found most useful. (I don't know how to blue clicky, but it's also on the Mudcat Links page)
http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/index.html
This has the ORIGINAL sheet music with copyright date, etc.. The problem with the BMI and ASCAP pages is they contain dozens of copyright versions of songs that are in public domain, so you can't get a real picture of what's legal to use. For instance, they list 18 copyrighted versions of "Old Black Joe" which was written about 150 years ago and is indisputably public domain.

BMI and ASCAP are right - SPECIFIC arrangements ARE copyrighted. It's why I try to use sources circa 1900 - which are in the public domain.

And I just found an absolutely fantastic site - it not only has a list of public domain music - but public domain sheet music for a great many of them. It's at Web Helper Public Domain Index of Music (http://www.web-helper.net/PDMusic/A/A.html). The pages have an excellent introduction on what it takes to prove an arrangement is public domain.

That seems like a pretty good site, Lesley N. I have one gripe with it: It doesn't seem to provide a link to Professor Karjala's web page. Lucky for me, mudcat has blue clicky thingy capability, so I can do something besides just gripe.

T, I'm so glad you put up that link. It's a page I found some time ago and couldn't find again. It has been incredibly valuable to me. I use a great many of Sharp's arrangements - though I have the original, it has been reprinted by Dover and Professor K's site let me sleep easier at night! This time I will bookmark it - and I'm going to add a link to it in my copyright discussion!

Thanks!

Lesley N., by "copyright discussion" do you mean you have a web page with copyright stuff on it, or do you mean you plan to start another copyright thread at mudcat--or both?

Subject: RE: copyright dates - help!

I keep an introduction page on my site that addresses most of the common issues/questions I've run into over the years. It tells people what the requirements are if they want to use any music on their page, how to troubleshoot background music (and links to other places if my suggestions don't help), where else to find lyrics (mainly DT - and how to create threads here), where to find sheet music, etc. etc. One of the etcs. is about copyrights. It's one of those things I think anyone dealing with music/lyrics that they did not create themselves should address on their site.

I'm not perfect - I've got some tunes that I should find other sources for and redo - some from Burl Ives' Songbook, for example. But I didn't have another resource for them and part believes that Burl would not mind my putting the arrangements on the web. That's very presumptuous, of course, but I'll keep them there until I do find a replacement - or I'm told to "cease and desist."

I'm much more paranoid about it now than I used to be - as so many sites have been shut down. I don't fear being shut down completely, because I've documented things so well I can easily figure out which ones I'd have to pull. But if I were contacted, I would loose some really great songs and have a lot of work trying to find other arrangments ... How I wish I were a musician!!!

The "Mudcat Under Attack" thread is starting to take too long to load. This is as good a thread to provide a blue clicky thingy to Benedict O'Mahoney's web site, which might be informative or at least amusing. T.
