Just getting into Dylan's early bootlegs and I'm looking for more info on the same songs you posted about. Any progress on this over the last decade?

-Eva

This sounds like a C & W tune I used to do called "Mary Ann." It's about a cowboy out with his horse riding fence in the winter. He ends up freezing to death "Just a 100 yards from Mary Ann." Maybe Marty Robbins?? I flat cannot remember - Sons of the Pioneers?

Steve

That's actually not the one I meant, Burke, tho' I have heard it longer than the other.

It turns out not to be the song the original poster wanted, as Guest has so vociferously reminded us, but it works quite well as

An I - am bound a-way for the sea - Mary Ann (cha cha cha)

Trust me, all the songs with "Mary Ann" in them were turned into teases by my charming sister Pam

(down by the seaside, eating sand;
all the little children hate Mary Ann,

you get the picture. Be nice to your sibs; at least the ones with good memories.

I found that calypso version mentioned above Here, but not your cowboy version.

This looks like a candidate for the Unanswered Requests thread.

Peter T

Your 'Gold Standard' Dylan Site should be downgraded to a 'Silver'

This page mentions the Dylan bootlegs on which Bob's version of Mary Ann can be found.

And for everyone else who still isn't reading closely, NO it's not the 1973 'Farewell My Dear' version that we're talking about

I'm a little rusty on my Dylan history but wasn't Mary Ann an outtake from Self Portrait (sounds like that "mellow" type voice tho with Bob that can be a dangerous assumption). Definitely not released, officially, until 1973 (I have the record in front of me as I type). Any more info welcome though.

The gold standard of Dylan sites is here!. And he doesn't have it, except the later one mentioned. So there must be another title, or it is so obscure that Eyolf doesn't know it, which is pretty damn obscure.

yours, Peter T.

MARY ANN

Traditional (adopted by Bob Dylan)

Oh fare thee well, my own true love
Oh fare thee well, my dear
For the ship is a-waiting
The wind blows high
And I'm bound away
For the sea, Mary Ann

10000 miles away from home
10000 miles or more
Sea may freeze
And the earth may pend
If he never no more
Return to you Mary Ann

Short RA clip here. What I did, see, was ask Google for "mary ann" then asked the Search Within Results for dylan. Came right up.......this is Dylan's Mary Ann, so I don't know what bobjr is referring to.......

I checked www.bobdylan.com and although it lists the song, it doesn't have lyrics printed, which is very rare on his site.

Peter T. knows of another very good Dylan site that would probably have the lyrics. I'll PM him and ask him to post the link.

and this bob song is different from all of them it sounds like a cowboy song the melody is very much like a dust bowl type ballad or a western work song nothing to do with the sea at all......

Belafonte recorded "All Day, All Night, Marianne", which is a very different song from ".. I am bound away for the sea, Mary Ann"....

There's "Mary Ann" as referenced in the second post, by GUEST. I've heard this one by Ian & Sylvia.

Then there's "Mary Ann" that I believe mag' was referring to, which was a hit for Harry Belafonte.

I don't know of any lyrics in these two songs I've mentioned which are anything like what bob jr had in his opening post here. Is the song in question yet a different one titled "Mary Ann"?

Mag': Dylan has written enough great songs of his own without claiming ones he didn't write (with the exception of the odd melody in the early days, but never lyrics). The album "Dylan" (1973) quite clearly credits the song as "trad". Doesn't he make a great job of it tho!!

It's been around a lot longer. Dylan may have recorded it (and probably copyrighted it in the process) but he did not write it.

this song mary ann sounds very much like an old cowboy song and nothing like a sea shanty (no refrances at all to the sea or boats or sailing ) i am not sure if its a real cowboy/trad american song or could it possibly be an early original? the tape does include one other dylan original (one eyed jacks) i was hoping someone fluent in american folk song could answer this for me
