As with many songwriters, you might say that Steve Earle peaked early. I'm with Bobert - 'Copperhead Road' and 'Devil's Right Hand' are perfect mini-ballads, combining classic folksong-style storytelling with authentic blue-collar vernacular. And, of course, both songs really rock. Another song from that era that I rate very highly but never seems to get quoted on lists like this is 'Number 29' - another lovely snapshot of small-town, rust-belt America, with a poignant story to tell.

I don't think he ever surpassed those lyrically, although all of his anti-death-penalty material ('Billy Austin', 'Ellis Unit 1' and 'Over Yonder') is strong, as are his Appalachian coal mine songs ('Harlan Man' and 'The Mountain'). 'Taneytown' is a tough commentary on small-town racism.

As far as making a great noise goes, if you just want to hear some really raunchy music (which to my ears blows away a lot of so-called 'hard rock'), listen to 'Goin' to New York City' or 'The Unrepentant'. For sentimentality, 'I'm Still in Love with You' (one of his classic Emmylou duets) is gorgeous, and like Tiger I love 'Forth Worth Blues' as well... and a lot of the bluegrass stuff. Oh, and I nearly forgot forgot 'My Old Friend the Blues'.

I can't think of another songwriter who's turned out so much great material in such a variety of styles.

Most of you Earle fans will already have seen this show but, if not, go to the Youtubes of the 'To Hell and Back' concert from Cold Creek Correctional Facility, Tennessee, in 1996.

There's a great Unrepentant, and it really took some balls to sing Ellis Unit 1 to this particular audience!

It would have to be "Fort Worth Blues" written to honor his friend and mentor Townes Van Zandt.

Thanks CH.

Right now I am up to my earballs archeiving a couple of thousand (it sure seems that many) tunes/songs from my collection. Just getting the "raw" data into MP3 files for later editing, cataloging, cleaning up. DANG it is a lot of work! Point is I am on the web more often right now as I need to baby sit the turn table and keep an eye on the wave creating application (Cool Edit 2000) and can jump on and off the net about every 20 minutes or so to save the file. When all the data is finally stored I will go get some Earle music (and a few others)

Oh the joys of being a retred!

Too many, too many.... The Bullfrogs do Copperhead Road and Johnny Come Lately --- and we're on the The Original Unofficial Steve Earle Website in the section listing his songs by other artistes. (The site is a great SE resource BTW). My personal favourite is Valentine's Day. It's the first song I ever sang to the Beloved -- and it worked!

Johnny Came Lately. "Gonna drink Camden Town dry tonight, if I have to spend my last paound"! He got a big cheer when I heard him sing that line in London a few years ago. Also saw in in Glasgow, got the t-shirt, prefer him in acoustic-ish mode.

Clinton Hamilton, I confess I don't know the song and I've only got the one Copperhead Road album (I really like THAT cut,Devils Right Hand, it's OK, I like Back to the Wall better, though).

This thread makes me want to hear more of the lad. I haven't heard anything I didn't like even if I didn't rave on it.

CB

PS CH, don't let it get to ya, I RARELY get a post responded to, but, then, I am a certified smartass, no doubt.

I haven't heard much of his music, but always liked this one:

Guitar Town
(Steve Earle)

Hey, pretty baby, are you ready for me?
It's your good rockin' daddy down from Tennessee
I'm just out of Austin bound for San Antone
With the radio blastin' and the bird dog on
There's a speed trap up ahead in Selma Town
But no local yokel gonna shut me down
'Cause me and my boys got this rig unwound
And we've come a thousand miles from a Guitar Town

Nothin' ever happened 'round my hometown
And I ain't the kind to just hang around
But I heard someone callin' my name one day
And I followed that voice down the lost highway
Everybody told me you can't get far
On thirty-seven dollars and a Jap guitar
Now I'm smokin' into Texas with the hammer down
And a rockin' little combo from the Guitar Town

Hey, pretty baby, don't you know it ain't my fault
I love to hear the steel belts hummin' on the asphalt
Wake up in the middle of the night in a truck stop
Stumble in the restaurant wonderin' why I don't stop

Gotta keep rockin' while I still can
I got a two-pack habit and a motel tan
But when my boots hit the boards, I'm a brand new man
With my back to the riser, I make my stand
And hey, pretty baby, won't you hold me tight
We're loadin' up and rollin' out of here tonight
One of these days I'm gonna settle down
And take you back with me to the Guitar Town

Too many to name. But a few off the top would be, Over yonder, Halo round the Moon, Fort Worth Blues, Steve's last Ramble, Telegraph Road, The Boy who never Cried, Galway Girl, Valentine's Day, Goodbye. I'm a big fan and rumour has it that he may be coming up to Nova Scotia for the Minglewood Festival.

Tie between "Copperhead Road" and "Dixieland," but Norman Blake's guitar break before the last two verses of "Tom Ames' Prayer," on the "Train A'Comin'" album, makes that my favorite particular recording, as opposed to song, of Earle's. I understand Norman to have stated he didn't compose that break beforehand, he just got the "nod" and ran with it. Incredible, even for him.

Peter.
