Subject: Lyr Req: Peter Bellamy's Yarmouth Town

I'd like to get the text of Yarmouth Town exactly as sung by Peter Bellamy (in Won't You Go My Way and in the Free Reed anthology Wake the Vaulted Echoes). Here are the lyrics as I can get them. Please, help me to correct them. Thank you. Roberto

In Yarmouth Town there lived a man, he kept a tavern by the strand (sand?)
This landlord had a daughter fair, a pretty (??) little thing with the golden hair

Well, won't you come down
Won't you come down
Won't you come down
To Yarmouth town?

Now to this tavern come a sailorman, he asked the daughter for her hand
Why should I marry you? - She said - I get all I want without being wed

But –she says- if you want with me to linger, I'll tie a piece of string all around my finger
As you pass by, just pull the old string, and I'll come down and I'll let you in

At closing time the sailorman he went to the tavern by the strand (sand?)
And then he went and he pulled the old string, and she come down and she let him in

Well, he's never seen such a sight before, 'cause the string around the finger was (were?) all she wore
And when he went and he pulled the old string, she pulled up (?) the blanket and let Jack in

So, the sailor stayed the whole night through and early in the morning went back to the crew
Where he told them all about that maiden fair, the pretty (???) little thing with the golden hair

And the story, that soon got around, and the very next night in Yarmouth town
There was fifteen sailors pulling on the string, and she come down and she let them all in

So all you young men who (?) to Yarmouth do go, if you see (?????) a little girl with the hair hung low
Well, all you got do is to pull the old string and she'll come down and she'll let you all in

I don't know about Bellamy as I've never heard him - but everyone I know does sing 'strand' not 'sand'

And if you want the dialect right dont pronounce the 'W' in Wont.

'Ont you come down to Yarmouth town'

The Vaulted Echoes version has:

1: sand, plump
3: bit of string not piece of string
4: sand
5: were, back
6: his crew not the crew
8: what down not who
see a plump not if you see

Mick

Thank you all for your help. I think that Mick's markings have the final word, and I have Yarmouth Town as sung by Peter Bellamy. Roberto
