As luck would have it, I got Freeview set up this week and so was finally able to get BBC4.

I'd only heard Kate once before on that awful New Years program where I would have described her as mediocre at best. Last night's program was a complete contrast to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I thought she both sang well and came over well as a person. I was also very impressed with her backing band - I thought they were superb.

Thanks for letting me know about this one. I'm very glad I watched it.

I had a memory loss and missed the Cara Dillon program and half of Kate. Thought Kate came across well. I was disappointed with the sound mix - it could have been a lot better. Nice to hear her dipping into Hank Williams' repetoire! ( i.e. "Where the Soul of a Man Never Dies")

Well, after all the discussion about Kate last week, I watched the show,and I agree the band was first class.
Kates voice and delivery were again very poor. Classics like "Withered and died" should have been "show stoppers",but Kate managed to make every song sound the same. What would June have done with that band and set of songs?.
The other extraviganza from Ulster worried me even more,poor Caras' wee voice was completely swamped,and although Brian Kennedy has a beautiful voice,whats it all got to do with folk music?
I fear we're on a downward spiral into "stardom",soon "Folk music" will be only a memory...Ake

I am tempted to agree: where's the fire in Kate Rusby? Very nice, wholly unexceptionable. Beside Steeleye or Fairport, the vocals do not burn. But she's a better guitarist than I thought (was she playing a Fylde?) and thank god there was no piano.

More of an Irish-American tinge to the presentation than I wholly like on largely mainland UK material.

Incidentally "plangent" has two meanings: one apt, one not.

I have seen her sing without any backing and this TV concert with a very fine band. I am not too sure if she has quite made the jump from solo to performing with a band.

For I feel that her singing would have come over better without the band and the band would have put on a better show without her. I felt that her contribution actually detracted from what the band were trying to do and the overall effect. For the overall result was to anchor the performance back to a nice but in truth, a not very flexible voice and each song did sound very much the same.

For example - do you really need to la-la-la over the band, when you have a band such as this one? The diddle diddle di dows and such like that link traditional songs, generally are just there because there is no instrumental link to the next verse. When there is an instrumental link and a fine band to provide it - singing these these on top, just gets in the way.

The hype is really the problem - for I am sure that she is a very fine lass and is working very hard.

Amen to that and one hopes that this will be pointed out - for future TV appearances as all that is required is a little work on the camera angles or indeed the microphone skills. I feel that this would have certainly helped this paticular show.

I had no problem with the words, and I suffer from RP, so if I can get them I'm surprised if there really is an enunciation problem, so to that extent I disagree Sham.

I also disagree about the "fol-der-dildle-dildo" bits. No reason no to use the voice as an instrument.

It is really all very good, just gets a bit cloying without some vinegar.

I watched the concert last night anf I agree with akenaton there was no fire there. The first couple of songs were grand but as the concert progressed all the songs sounded alike. When I closed my eyes and just listened I couldn't here any emotion or passion in her voice. I agree that Kate has a nice voice but music and song should have passion and emotion and this was clearly lacking.

I would take Ake's point about "stars" though and would also like to have heard what others (including some unknown singers I've met in clubs and sessions) may have done with the same excellent backing.

Whatever, I still enjoyed it, as far as I'm concerned, Kate got up there and delivered the goods, and I suspect that some of this may be down to how others may like to hear a song interpreted.

Ah passion, is it! I have a theory that the most successful folksingers are the ones with an intense singing style. This side of the pond, that would include Dick Gaughan, Martin Carthy and Paul Brady; And I think folkies respond to them because the majority of folkies are a product of the rock era, and have an appetite for "intense" vocal deliveries. "Lyrical" folksingers - Roy Harris and Cyril Tawney, for example - have never been as popular.

Well said tunesmith - she is also a pleasant change from the finger in the ear nasal drone style of folk singing so many people prefer. Folk's equivqlent of RP. Regardless of where the song is from or what it's about many think it can be improved with a finger in the ear and singing down their nose. Oh and a pint in one hand never goes amiss. I recall in some other time zone that when you switched the BBC on the only folk song you ever heard was deliverd by "The Spinners". Now I have nothing against "The Spinners" but it did jar that that was it!. It looks like it might be going the same way with the fragrant Miss R.

When the spinners were in season I only recall them as being around once a week and then only for limited seasonal runs, again hardly overdoing it, same goes for Kate Rusby, even more so.

If you were, or are able to find constant spinners on tv then you really do need to get out more.

I agree with Cat. Kate Rusby is a good singer and musician. I heard her at festivals a few years back and thought she came over much better as a solo performer. I loved her singing the Yorkshire Couple but the rest of the songs did sound very much the same. Perhaps this was because she was singing to a mixed audience rather than a traditional folk one?

Bill is taking an extended break from touring and recording at the moment, due to being very busy enjoying motherhood at home in Sunderland. Dominic is now a year old (born December 2003), and Bill and Chris are expecting a second baby in July 2005. Bill may take on some gigs from 2006 onwards but until then will not be touring.

In January 2005, Bill is recording some vocals for Karen Tweed's forthcoming solo album - more details here when we have them.

Bill was involved in a couple of tours and other projects in 2004. In May, a short tour in Japan (Tokyo and Nagoya) was very successful, performing as a double bill with David Munnelly and Gavin Ralston. In July, Bill performed at Rudolstadt Folk Festival in Germany, and Bill is featured on the festival's live CD Rudolstadt 2004 (HD20046) singing Brian Bedford's song "What am I Bid?"
