If possible, pick a waltz that has can be connected in a personal way to the bride, even if it isn't a "name" waltz--We once played "Waltz Across Texas" at the request of a bride's family, she was from Texas, and ended up playing it three more times(Texans are notably enthusiastic about their state)--Sometimes you can even find a way to dedicate a familiar Waltz so that it makes a special connection, like "Roses from the South"--

Look for "The Wedding Gift" written by Dave Panting of Rawlings Cross, it's a great tune.

My wife and I had Fanny Powers, by Turlogh O'Carolin, it is a wonderful wedding tune, written for David Powers' daughter, and the Gaelic words translated, from memory...
I'll not quit this world till with joy and with pride
I will dance at the wedding where you shine as the bride
and cursed be the suitor a dowery demands of
fair Fanny the daughter of David.
It is on a number of albums, a chieftan album, one of the Derrik Bell harp albums and a bunch of others... Geeze if ya want a quartette I'll come and play it on the Uilleann Pipes for ye.

My wife and I once played a waltz at a wedding where the bride's name was Nancy. We announced and played "Nancy's Waltz", and it was one of the most memorable waltzes we have played...I remember the entire dance floor was twirling.

If there is a waltz named with the bride's name, consider it...it makes a nicely personal statement...Bob McQuillen has written many beautiful waltzes named for people...Amelia's, for example...

I am curious to know which waltz you decide to use...I hope you post your choice.

I and my group played "The Waltz Of The Bride" at weddings for a good number of years, with no complaints, for the first dance. Very simple melody and lyrics. Believe it is a take off of an old tune "Waltz of The Wind". Someone no doubt direct you to a link to this tune.

One of my favorite old-sounding waltzes is the Indiana Waltz, which Bruce Greene plays on his Vintage Fiddle Tunes tape. The notes say: "this rare old country waltz is from Ellis Voorhies of Battle, Kentucky." This waltz is unique because it is more rhythmic than notey. Definitely "southern" sounding...

For those of you Ashokan Farewell (Jay Ungar) fans, his Lover's Waltz is even better, IMHO...

We used Midnight on the Water at my wedding (Aly Bain does a beautiful version of it). Ashokan Farewell is another favourite.

Emma's Waltz (trad Finnish). It's poignant as well as sweet, and very beautiful. The chords given for that one in The Waltz Book II (chord arrangement by Morton Alfred) are quite stunning.

Us Foolish Virgins play a heavily Cajunized 'Midnight on the Water' (in D) as a wedding waltz, which usually goes down really well. We usually bung 'Margaret's Waltz' (in A) on the end, which rounds it off nicely. If you want something more uptempo, the marvellous Kate Martyn's by Blair Douglas is a belter, but it is better delivered with an accordion in the ensemble.

A southern English waltz written by a brilliant young musician Jon Brenner of The Gloworms would surely be ideal. It's called Cuddly House and isn't yet recorded but you can hear a clip on their website along with contact details should you want to book them...

Another thought...with the violin, viola and cello, I can imagine a wonderfully rich version of "Seamus O'Brien"...obviously not southern in origin, but it came to us through a fiddle contest in North Carolina, Fiddler's Grove.

I've searched the forums and found plenty of wedding music lists, but I don't know which songs would work well for my particular need (I'm pretty clumsy musically), so I'm hoping you fine folks can help.

I'm looking for a first dance song, preferably a waltz or a song which can be played in waltz time. I would love something along the lines of the Tennessee Waltz, musically, without the sad lyrics. Something upbeat and cheerful.

The song will be played by a string trio - violin, viola and cello (no voice accompanyment-sp?).

I'd like it to also fit into our "southern" theme, so old southern folk music is wonderful.
