Thanks, Celi

"Avondale", written by Dominic Behan, using, curiously enough, a beautiful tune, used earlier for "The Orange Maid of SLigo". A search on Avondale shoujd turn it up for you.

Regards

Do you mean Dominic Behan's Avondale? It's in the DT here.

Or perhaps, 'Sweet Rose of Allendale' also in the DT?

Just last week Mrs. Dominic Behan told that "Avondale" was her favourite song written by Dominic.

As originally requested, The chords for the song are embedded in the ABC notation below enclosed in " ".

X:1
T:Avondale
M:3/4
L:1/8
Q:1/4=100
K:D
A,2 |"D"D D D3 F |A F D3 F |
w: Oh, have you been to A-von-dale, or
"Em"G F E3 D |"A"C E A,3 A, |
w: lin-ger'd in her love-ly vale, Where
"D"D "G"F G2 F G |"D"A F D3 A |
w: tall trees whis-per all low the tale Of
"Em"G E "A"C3 A, |("G"B, D) "D"D4 |
w: A-von-dale's proud ea-_ gle?

I extracted the ABC notation direct from the downloadable version of Digital Tradition, but changed the 4th last chord from E to Em after a two second look at the G natural and E notes that need to match the chord.

Regards, John

There is another song on subject of Parnell called the "Blackbird of Sweet Avondale" sung by Geordie Hanna on a Topic CD Celtic Voices, although there he's listed as George whereas I usually see him listed as Geordie.

It's based, I beieve on a Jacobite song The Royal Blackbird but with Parnell symbolised as The Blackbird rather than James Stewart

A fine song, I played that recording by Geordie on my Resonance show last November.

I believe the words in the DT should be

Where tall trees whisper low the tale

and

Where fame and ancient glory fade

This is based on my memory of the Mick Moloney recording, so those may be wrong, and there may be other errors I've missed.

Aloha,
Mark

I think you're correct Mark, they are also the words used by Al O'Donnell on his excellent recording of the song.
