"The Christy Moore Songbook"
is easily available online in both
new and old editions. Probably the
easiest place to order through is
Christy's own website, www.christymoore.com.
They also carry the "One Voice" book, which
is a personal favorite of mine.
Cost for "TCMSB" new is around
15 dollars US on most of the sites
I visited, including Amazon.
You shouldn't pay more for it unless
you can find a signed first edition.

Subject: Lyr Add: REEL IN THE FLICKERING LIGHT (C Gallagher
From: wildlone

REEL IN THE FLICKERING LIGHT    CHRISTY MOORE

   G                C                   A          D
As I walked home one evenin' I know this takes some believin',
G             C                  D         D7      G
I met a group of creatures with the strangest lookin' features.
G                                        A
A poor old dog with a worm and a weed and a fine old pigeon, yes indeed,
      G               C                G       D          G
Daddy Longlegs jumped up sprightly and danced a reel in the flickering light.

CHORUS
    G            C
Oh, round we go, heel to the toe,
      G               C
Daddy Longlegs jumped up spright
    G             D          G
And danced in the reel of the flickering light.

       G             C               A               D
On his thin and wispy spindles he was deft and he was nimble,
    G                   C       D       D7 G
His eyes were scientific and his dancing was terrific.
    G                                          A
The rats and the worms they made a din and the nettles in the corner took it in,
    G          C                         G            D          G
'Oh God' sez I 'tonight's the night we'll dance to the reel in the flickering light!'

CHORUS

Then he looked at me directly with a gaze that could dissect me,
And he asked me in a whisper 'Have you got any sisters?'.
' Good God Almighty' says I to him ' what sort of a man do you think I am?
I've only one and she's not your type, she wouldn't dance a reel in the flickering light!'

CHORUS

Sez he 'Does she come from another planet? Does she have a bee in her bonnet?
Does she do her daily duties? You never know we might be suited'.
And the rats and the worms began to laugh and some of them started shufflin' off.
We're gonna to have some fun tonight, gettin' ready for the reel in the flickering light.

CHORUS

I could see he had no scruples when I looked into his pupils,
They were purple or magenta like a statue during Lent.
I said 'I'll get her right away' 'Good man' says he, now don't delay,
We're gonna have some fun tonight'. Then he flipped his legs in the flickering light.

CHORUS

Then up stepped a red carnation and they gave her an ovation.
She was warm and enchanting as she slowly started dancing.
The bright auld pigeon peeled his eye and the nettles and the weeds began to sigh,
Daddy Longlegs said 'my, oh my, are we ready for the reel in the flickering light?

CHORUS

She was gentle, she was charming and I heard him call her Darlin'.
He was graceful as a whisper on his delicate legs of silver.
The rats and the worms were still as mice and the poor auld pigeon said 'that's nice',
A shimmering veil of a lovely bride and they danced to the reel in the flickering light.

CHORUS X 2

Jim, I will check my copy when I get home off the road, later this week. Off the top of my head, I don't recall it being there. I would like the lyrics and music to this one, as I am a fan of anything Connolly. How can I get them?

All the best,

Mick Lane

As the publisher (JB Music) of Dominic Behan's 'Connolly Will Be There' I received a letter many years ago from Christie or his agent requesting permission to use the said song. The letter, however had neither a date nor returning address so I couldn't answer it. Does anyone know whether it's in the books mentioned?

Yes "Ride on" is included, as are examples songs from nearly all the albums he was featured on from 1969 to 1984. Songs by Christie , himself, Ewan MacColl, Woody Guthrie and a bunch of Irish songwriters - and a great selection of traditional songs.
