I have to have the car radio/CD player on very quietly, otherwise I sing along, then I start to harmonise. (Try, anyway.)
I can't harmonise with my eyes open.....
A couple of near misses convinced me.

I agree about the radio in the car.   When I'm driving cross country, I'll listen to music. But when I hit a city, I turn it off. It's too distracting once traffic builds up.

But I almost never listen to the actual radio. I prefer to play my own CD's. I buy most CD's specifically for the car in the card section of Target. Targets have a secion called Lifescape CD's where you can listen to the music before you buy. The music is interesting, but not so interesting as to be a distraction in the car.

I think I notice music more than the average person does.

A girlfriend once asked me if her new dress looked OK.
I said it looks good to me, and added, but, I'm not wearing my glasses, or contacts.

It did not seem to go over well, at the time. But, she told me she told this story later to girlfriends, with a giggle, when they were discussing "stupid men".

As someone mentioned above, when I'm driving and find myself in a tricky location, looking for an address at night, or looking for the little side street where I'll need to turn with little warning, I turn the radio off.

We don't REALLY multitask, we switch back and forth from one mental job to another. When there's a need for concentration, getting rid of the distraction of listening to the radio really does yield a noticeable improvement in concentration power.

Did you ever notice that when you have a full bladder and are heading for "the necessary room", you often can't concentrate well enough to figure out the answer to even a very simple question from a bystander? I've often experienced that.

I had a friend who had the laser eyesight treatment. Got Golden Staph, and now still has to wear glasses, and can no longer wear contacts.

"we have glasses everywhere, though we can still never find them when needed. "

When you are not wearing your glasses, you cannot see enough to find them. Sounds logical to me ...

My opto told me that lasik is not for people over 40. I have confidence in him and am not about to try it.

My daughter and her husband both had the lasik treatment done a number of years ago. My daughter's eyesight is fine- no glasses of any kind. My SiL's results were not as hoped; he wears glasses for reading.

ZMy uncle, at the tender age of 85, had lasic and he was very proud of the fact that he could read a newspaper without glasses. He's the only person I know who has had it done.

My daughter had laser treatment a few years ago and seems very happy with the result. I was told that, even if I had it, I would still have to wear glasses for close work, so it didn't really make any sense for me.

The other option of course is laser treatment, I have heard good and bad reports about this.

Same with me Dave - I've been using varifocals for about 15 years now - only take them off for bed or shower.

I tend to crochet while watching TV or at a concert , whatever and varifocals mean that I can see close up and distance without changing the specs. I would love to do without completely but it ain't going to happen now.

I started on glasses about four years older than you, Jim, though I graduated to varifocals. When you're driving a seven-and-a-half tonner, it's handy to be able to see the dashboard AND the road ahead (not to mention the mirrors)! I had a wierd experience once - I was lying there giving blood when I realized that everything was fuzzy - stopped panicking two seconds later when I realised I was looking at everything through the reading bit!

My wife doesn't like sub-titled films - she keeps the distance specs in the car for driving (when she remembers to wear them). She did appreciate the difference though when I talked her into her first pair of reading glasses - she was working as a Leagl Secretary at the time and suddenly stopped getting headaches every working day.

PS. I could still pass the sight part of the driving test without glasses, but I know the difference in my eyesight and driving without glasses terrifies me.

LOL
Jim I have glasses all round the place as well. I just bought a new pair to live beside the telly so I can read the TV guide in a hurry, without having to search the house. They're only el-cheapo $5 jobs.
And when I'm driving, the radio has to be turned down when I'm approaching a tricky intersection, so I can concentrate on what I'm seeing. Once we're through I can cope with it being louder.
I think eyes and ears are co-ordinated in concerts or watching telly etc but when you're really listening to something or someone you're less likely to notice what's going on around you, and when you're looking at something, like the computer screen, your ears are almost switched off.
Robyn

Ah, Jim, you are now reaping the reward of those years of being "that kid with the glasses".

We who have come to specs a little later in life are not programmed to keep track of them (as my father and sister both were, having started young enough) without concious effort. We have to think about it and don't succeed too often.

Wearing glasses constantly is also less than ideal, but I'm getting there. When we reach Specmaster Nirvana, your wife and I may catch you up, but for now we have glasses everywhere, though we can still never find them when needed.

My wife has reading glasses scattered all over the house. There are two pairs by the computer (I don't know why), one pair by the phone downstairs, one on the nightstand by the bed, one next to each of the two chairs she sometimes sits in, one in the car, and probably one in her purse. But she often doesn't carry her purse when she goes out, so I end up reading menus to her in restaurants.

She refuses to wear glasses on a string around her neck. She thinks it will make her look old. I ask her, how old do you think you look when you hold the menu at arm's length and squint?

Me, I started wearing glasses when I was 12 years old and switched to bifocals when I was in my 40s. I never take them off except in bed or when I take a shower. Much less hassle that way.

The Singing Postman sang a song about his horn-rimmed glasses, and he wore them in bed so he could see the people who appeared in his dreams!

I ad toast and mildew for breakfast yesterday....Mmmmmmmm. This isn't an age thing with me though, born that way, nearly a +10..Luckily I wear contact lenses...phew! If I dare put my glasses on I frighten the dog...

I can fill a mug up by listening to the water changing 'note' as it gets near the top. Comes in very handy for getting rid of creepy crawlies too, as I simply take my lenses out, then head in the direction of the coloured blob on the floor/wall...

If I lived in the days before spectacles, I'd live in the dirtiest house you could imagine, dressed in filthy clothes, whilst under the happy illusion that all was clean and pristine.. LOL

Toast and Mildew is actually rather nice and tasts no different from toast without mildew...It was only when I went to make Nanny a sandwich later on, with lenses firmly in eyes, that I noticed....I had a good chuckle over that one...

Ebbie, a similar thing happened here a few years ago.....well not here because we weren't living here at the time but in our last house.......when I went to use a can of hair spray I couldn't find it in the bathroom cupboard, it wasn't there.....turns out Himself had used it for underarm deodorant and thrown it away when it was empty.

A whole can of hairspray. It was nearly full because I only used it about twice a year......he wasn't wearing his glasses when he stepped out of the shower.

Cheers
JennieG

The pickled cabbage reminds me; My wife couldn't decide what she wanted to drink at a soiree. "Get me a surprise!"

You don't find the pickled red cabbage until you get near the end of the port wine.
Yes, we're still married, but she's never asked for a surprise since.

Beer... that's because when you squint your eyes and tilt your head forward to focus on a speaker or other sound source, it changes the angles of your ears and thus changes the geometry of your ears in relation to the source thereby reducing the capacity to collect and funnel sound waves into you ear canals.

Yeah... sounds like bullshit to me too. But it's pretty good bullshit if I do say so myself. And I am a pretty good judge of bullshit. Some say I am a master of bullshit but I am shy to accept such accolades. I shit you not.

Ooh, I have to take mine off to see close, so when eating, I can either keep them on and see my tablemates, or take them off and see my food. If I choose to see my food, since my glasses hang on that old-person chain-around-the-neck, some of my food always ends up ON my glasses, on the inside of the lenses which face up when on the chain...

So I get to see my food all over again...

The salad consisted of iceberg lettuce, tomatoe, julienne carrot and shredded red cabbage... red cabbage being the operative component of this post.

The pork chops were nearly done, so, in my haste to toss the salad, some flew out of the bowl onto the counter. I scooped it up deftly, placed it back in the bowl and tossed away.

Took me several minutes to extricate the twist tie from between my molars.

I shall never cook or toss without my glasses on again.

How's by youse?
