Big Tim, you are welcome as always.

Wolfgang, Dominic's Book "The Singing Irish" was published in 1967 by Scott Solomon (Southern music). It is a A5, green, cloth covered book of 136 pages, 100 songs, mainly credited to him, (here we disagreed), Fintan Connolly and Wolf Stephens, and "Dungannon '57" is listed by name.
love, john.

Dita,

first thanks for Behan's lyrics. One puzzle for me: Martin above wrote that he thinks it is found in Behan's 'The singing Island'. I have it and I looked to no avail. You write you found it in Behan's book 'The singing Irish'. Are these two different books? Or is it in my book and has a different title in there?

Wolfgang

When the silence it was broke
By a big loug bang that loudly rang

Can Joe or someone fix it for me Ta, love john.
I'll never get the hang of this"BR" stuff

From: Dita

From Dominic Behan's "The Singing Irish"

DUNGANNON '57
words by Dominic Behan
From "the singing irish"

Some men went to Dunganon Town
The barracks for to case,
And noticed how the noble crown
Gave class to that brand new place

Ch.
With your IRA ricochet! play it on your Lambeg drum!

The RUC knew that we
Had planned to have some sport
For they'd read a peice by Dev's police
In a Free State news report

They read the papers satisfied
And said "Well now, that's that"
When suddenly to their surprise
Came a big loud RAT-TAT-TAT-Tat

Who's out there? What can we do?
For God's sake stop this lark
Are you Fenians or Red White and Blue
You out there in the dark

One fella stole out warily
But quickly withdrew again
When he found that he was staring down
the barrel of a STEN

The Free State news became a fact From a shower of dust and smoke

When those gardians of the nation thought
The lads were gone for good
They came out to find no station where
A station once had stood

There are ten loyal policemen now
Signing on the dole
And they'd love to get Dev's Irish Pres
And well upon my soul.

Dominic's note:- About four weeks before a proposed attack on Dungannon Barracks in the North of Ireland, the police from 26 counties raided a house and found papers pertaining to the raid which were published in one of the biggest selling Irish newspapers, "The Irish Press". The IRA went ahead with their plans.

I was not aware that the contents of Dominic's book were hard to find, (See posts above). I first met Dominic in the Victoria Bar in Glasgow where he greated me with :- "Your a folk singer, I wrote all the songs you sing, buy me a drink, you owe me", we had many an argument about whether he did or not, he got his drink, I got his books.
love, john

Brian, hope I diddn't sound too know-all-ish, there's so much I don't know. Unfortunately I can't check out Dungannon as I'm in the middle of moving house and all my books, including three histories of the IRA, are packed in sealed boxes. You may be intererested to know that there is a memorial to Fergal O'Hanlon and Sean South just south of Brookeborough where they died, inscribed in English and Irish, " This monument was erected in memory of Volunteer Feargal O'Hanlon (Monghan) and Volunteer Sean South (Limerick) who died at this spot on 1 January 1957 after an engagement with British forces at Brookeborough County Fermanagh".

Feargal O'Hanlon was killed, with Sean South, at Brookeborough RUC station on 31 December 1956/ 1 January 1957. He was aged 19.

The attack on the Dungannon barracks in 1957, in which 16 year old Fergan O'Hanlon was killed, was also the inspiration behind Dominic Behan's 'The Patriot Game'.

Below comes a (the?) "Dungannon '57" as I found it on another message board (here. I don't know it at all but it seems as if the lyrics could still be improved. A group called Battering Ram is also on the record for singing this song.

Wolfgang

DUNGANNON '57

Some men went to Dungannon town
The barracks for to gaze
And oh just how the Queen's army gave [Claset?] a new place
With your IRA ricochet, bang it on your Lambeg drum

The RUC they knew that we
Had planned to have some sport
but they'd read piece of our police in a Free State news report
With your IRA ricochet, play it on your Lambeg drum

The RUC had read the news
and said well now they're stuck
when suddenly to their surprise there came a rat-tat-tat.
With your IRA ricochet, play it on your Lambeg drum

"Now what's going on out there?" they said
"Now come on stop this lark
Are you Protestants or Fenian men that's out there in the dark?"
With your IRA ricochet, play it on your Lambeg drum

An RUC man went outside
And came right in again
When he found that he was looking down the barrel of a Sten!
With your IRA ricochet, play it on your Lambeg drum

They blew up the barracks that night
And the RUC as well
And if the British soldiers came they said they'd blow them all to hell!
With your IRA ricochet, play it on your Lambeg drum

Their are ten Royal policemen now
They're signing on the dole
And they'd love to get those Irish pests and shove it up his hole!
With your IRA ricochet, play it on your Lambeg drum

What's the significance of Dungannon in '57 in any century: not the Dungannon Conventions in the 18th century?
