That actually works shockingly well...

Neither country nor folk, but reminds me of the popular musician
NeilCicieregaMusic, who did mashups of songs in a similar way. His more recent stuff has moved further into the "meme" music territory than this, but a few good examples: Crocodile Chop (mashup of Elton John's Crocodile Rock and System of a Down's Chop Suey!) or Close to the Sun (a mix of The Carpenters' Close To You and Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun)

I am always amazed someone got Blondie's 'Heart of Glass' to mixed with Philip Glass' violin concerto. It takes a special sort of mind, and brilliance, I suppose, to hear the possibilities.

Heart of Glass - remix

Someone famous must have done this; I've been hearing it for years. Guy I used to play with would sometimes throw Pinball Wizard into the middle when I'd be doing Folsom Prison Blues. Always has to be someone famous who does it first, or who at least makes it suddenly popular.

One of the great old BBC Radio 4 quiz shows had a section where you had to sing one song to the tune of another - eg the 23rd Psalm to the tune of Like a Rolling Stone, with hilarious results.

Thompson, the radio show is "I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue'. The show still runs and they still do "One Song To The Tune Of Another".

A show that has been running for years on Australian TV, Spicks and Specks, has, as one of its regular segments, a game where one team member is given a book and a song, and has to read the book out loud but to the tune of the song, and his/her teammates are to figure out what the song is. It can be very difficult to ignore the words and concentrate on the melody.

If Johnny shot a man in Reno, how come he's in jail in California?

Not quite the same thing, but Sean Keane did a set of Cliffs of Moher with Heartbreak Hotel on one of his records.

As for ISIHAC, someone did Come Into The Garden Maud to the tune of Teddy Bears' Picnic while I was driving.. I nearly crashed the car.

> Why?

Initially because it seemed like a good idea at the time. Then the audience of the pilot episode liked it, so the Beeb overrode the loudly stated "Never Ever Again" from the cast* and the host**. I can't remember whether the pilot included "the game called Mornington Crescent".

* Basically the script-writing team of I'm Sorry I'll Read That Again (qv).

** The incomparable Humphrey Littelton, purveyor of breath-taking single entendres.

The Fall of Gil-galad seems to match-up with the tune Yankee Doodle pretty well. (We simple are easily amused)
