Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: Emma B Date: 30 Dec 06 - 08:38 AM Another all-time favourite singer recognized - wonderful! |
Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: Willie-O Date: 30 Dec 06 - 09:42 AM Archie's a wonderful singer and writer, a killer guitarist, and a lovely man, (and a cup-carrying member of the Loyal Order of Mosstroopers). But it's kind of ironic seeing him honoured by the British Empire...who next, Dick Gaughan? They are both decidedly anti-imperial. Ahh, congratulations in any case. W-O |
Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: CET Date: 30 Dec 06 - 09:59 AM A genuinely nice guy, too. I'm sure he realizes the OBE doesn't represent imperialism anymore. I hope he accepts the honour for what it is, a recognition of his services to music and to the nation. Edmund |

Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: John MacKenzie Date: 30 Dec 06 - 11:41 AM The nomination for these honours are made by others, and usually they are your peers, only a small percentage are 'time servers' or only getting the honour on a 'Buggins's Turn' basis. As such it is an honour, and a recognition of your contributions in your field, not a sop handed down by the Grate & Good, like crumbs from a rich man's table. Think about it logically, the people who approve the nominations have probably never heard Archie sing. Poor deprived souls that they are! Giok |
Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: Lanfranc Date: 30 Dec 06 - 12:05 PM Couldn't happen to a nicer bloke! Hope he gets the chance to pick up the gong at Balmoral! Alan |
Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: kendall Date: 30 Dec 06 - 12:26 PM Outstanding is almost not enough to call this icon. His "Witch of the westmoorlands" is one of my favorite songs, and his "Final Trawl" always gets to me. There are many more than I can list here. |
Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: maeve Date: 30 Dec 06 - 03:55 PM Long overdue and well deserved. Archie has earned the respect of fellow musicians along with that of his audience members and friends. Does anyone have a link to more information on this? Thanks for this thread. maeve- in the cold Maine snow... |

Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: elfcape Date: 30 Dec 06 - 07:11 PM Archie's show was nice tonite. You can listen again with RealAudio Player at http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/radioscotland/view/show.shtml?show=travelling&?focuswin Briefly in the middile of the show there was a small litany of those lost this year. And throughout Archie's sweet brushing aside of his new honor. |

Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: GUEST,Taffy Date: 31 Dec 06 - 06:58 AM Hamish Henderson, a great man in the Scottish Folk music scene, had the greater self esteem by refusing to accept such an 'honour'. |
Subject: RE: Archie Fisher MBE From: maeve Date: 31 Dec 06 - 07:16 AM With all respect, Taffy, Hamish made the decision he deemed best for him, as was his right. I don't see that Archie's honor is made any less as a result. Nor do I believe that Hamish would agree with that view. Lizzie Higgins told me, a year or so before her death, that she would have dearly loved such a recognition, and she was certainly deserving. This is Archie's honor and mark of appreciation. No comparisons are necessary, in my view. We're happy for him. Regards, maeve |
