Subject: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: autoharpbob Date: 19 Oct 10 - 07:27 AM Heard about this on Radio Nottingham "Folkwaves" last night, where they played a six minute track of Sandy singing "Lord Bateman"(?) unaccompanied - totally unreleased. Anyone have any details - when released, how much? The radio station was playing this track from a sampler they had been sent. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: theleveller Date: 19 Oct 10 - 07:33 AM Yeah, released 15th November. Costs £150 (yikes!), available for pre-order on Amazon. Nice, but I can't afford that sort of money. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Leadfingers Date: 19 Oct 10 - 07:52 AM Not for me , expecially at THAT price - A LOT of Sandy Denny is well woth listening to , but a lot is too 'Rock' for MY taste |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Reinhard Date: 19 Oct 10 - 12:30 PM And this comprehensive set includes all her albuma and probably everything that has already been published on her previous boxes, so we're paying for the same old stuff again and again. So at least 100£ of the new box's price is a scam to get our money for what we already have bought several times all over. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Noreen Date: 19 Oct 10 - 03:25 PM A scam, Reinhard?! Hardly fair- no-one is claiming it to be anything it's not, and nobody is forcing you to take any notice of it at all! NOT everyone already has all of Sandy's recordings; I for one would love this set- when my boat comes in :) |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Phil Edwards Date: 19 Oct 10 - 06:26 PM there are over 100 unreleased Sandy recordings on this boxset Out of 314 tracks? That would be about 1/3 of the total, which suggests that Reinhard got it about right - £100 of the £150 is paying for previously released material. (And does anyone need seven versions of "Who knows where the time goes"?) |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: autoharpbob Date: 20 Oct 10 - 06:30 AM Thanks everyone, great information. I like the idea of being able to get a whole collection of Sandy's work all in one go, plus some very interesting extras, artwork and stuff. But as I already have a lot of it, I would also have liked the chance to just buy the unreleased stuff. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Will Fly Date: 20 Oct 10 - 07:26 AM I can see that the whole kit and caboodle, as shown on the Island Records web store is obviously beautifully presented, with posters, a book, etc. all included in the packaging. For those people who have a considerable amount of Sandy Denny's recorded output, I think £145.99 is going to be off-putting. Perhaps, at some stage, Island might consider doing a subsidiary release of the individual albums without the accompanying material - so that those who can't find the total price at one go, or who already have some of it, could obtain what they wanted in smaller, more attainable bites. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Brian May Date: 20 Oct 10 - 07:52 AM Great artist. Who gets the profits? Price is well OTT considering the price of producing a DVD or several these days. Had they been grouped into previously released and newly released and available separately, then it would've made more sense. There's probably a whole generation now, who've never heard of her (their loss perhaps, but nevertheless true). |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: GUEST,Spleen Cringe Date: 20 Oct 10 - 11:48 AM Whilst I think Sandy Denny was a wonderful singer and songwriter, I can't help feeling that there's something a little cynical in dredging the archives for every last bit of Sandy Denny-related material. I'm sure some of the unreleased tracks are marvellous, but given the quantity of unreleased stuff (100 odd tracks) it does beg the question that if they were that great, why weren't they released at the time? And if this boxed set isn't a cynical excercise, surely the label would make the newly released archive material available separately, rather than in a format where many people who love Sandy's music have to buy stuff they already have for a second time to hear the new stuff. Personally I'd rather see the original albums remastered properly for CD in the way EMI have done with the Beatles albums - the sound on the early CD re-issues I have is pretty dreadful. And before it's repeated again, yes I know nobody is forcing me to take any notice of it at all, but I would quite like a way to hear the newly released stuff without the assumption being made that I want to buy what I already have. Finally, I simply hope no barrels were scraped in the production of this boxed set. That wouldn't be a very good way to caretake a great singer's legacy... |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: dick greenhaus Date: 20 Oct 10 - 01:46 PM The major problems with sing-artist anthologies is that too many fans already have a good deal of the material. The nature of the beast. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Reinhard Date: 20 Oct 10 - 02:01 PM Amazon Germany offers this box for EUR 388,99, i.e. £342. So the £150 on Amazon UK seem to be a real bargain price. I really would like to have the unreleased tracks if they give a new view on Sandy and are not just recording outtakes of already known songs having been scrapped at the time for not being good enough. But I fear most of the material is just that. I wonder how much really interesting tracks are left. Multiply that by the £0.79 MP3 downloads for individual songs cost on Amazon UK and you get an upper limit for what the box really is worth paying for. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: GUEST,Guest - Lindy Date: 20 Oct 10 - 03:33 PM Being a hugh Sandy Denny fan, I would love to hear the previously unrealeased material. Too bad they could not just release those tracks. (many have suggested that here as well). I know there are people who are just in recent years getting into Sandy's music and younger people too who are now into their 20's and discovering this type of music. But for a great majority of us who already have all these songs from other albums, the price is way too steep. I agree with Guest, Speen Cringe - (post of 20 Oct. 2010) and several others who have posted similiar messages. Yes, we do love the music of Sandy Denny but wow, how many people in these economic times, loss of jobs, expensive rents, mortgages, etc. can afford such a luxury? I know there are people out there who can afford it of course but many of us, who are big Sandy Denny fans would love to be able to hear previously unreleased songs at a more affordable price. I realize too that there is art work, etc and as lovely as that would be too have, just reading the majority of the posts here, it seems that most would agree that 150 pounds or approximately $237.00 U.S. dollars (today's rate in dollars)is way too steep of a price. |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Colin Randall Date: 20 Oct 10 - 04:29 PM It is an awful lot of money, but you get an awful amount of Sandy Denny for it (at the UK price - the German one quoted above is fantasy rip-off territory). Given how much new material is there, the price seems on the face of it to be fair. But it's a simple clash of arguments: she's worth it but not everyone can spare that kind of cash for it. I'll dip into the samples to which I have access but otherwise content myself with the old box sets and albums I already possess. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: GUEST,Ed Date: 20 Oct 10 - 07:09 PM It is an awful lot of money Exactly. I have the rubbish 'Strawbs' record, all of her Fairport and Fotheringay stuff, a live album. and a best of her solo stuff. Don't need any more |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: GUEST Date: 21 Oct 10 - 06:50 AM I actually compiled this boxset, and i can assure you its a labour of love and not a cynical ploy. A boxset of someones complete works is a valid project, but of course not for everyone. I put alot of time into researching this and went through many hours of tape. I managed to find superb demos from Fotheringay, Northstar and the whole Sandy album- these rank amongst some of her most beautiful recordings imo and are definatly not scrapping the barrel- there is nothing new on here that would dent her legacy- just a wonderful opportunity to hear stripped down versions of all your favourite songs! There were also quite a few Rendezvous studio demos which for those that find the finished album a little overproduced will be a must. Also some things that have leaked like the early home demos on 'Borrowed Thyme' i have re mixed from the master reels in excellent sound; far far superior to anything that has leaked thus far. Also we have Sandys complete LA Troubadour show with Fairport which has never come out and the few tracks that have have not been mixed but are of the desk so these sound much much better. There are also some interesting alternate takes from throughout her career, where songs were approched in a different way- like most of the Waltz album without strings. Also aside from the music this boxset has a wonderful book with many excellent and rare photos of Sandy. I do appreciate its a lot of money, but it is really good value for what your getting- compare the re-issue of the Stones exile on main street for example. Also Sandys solo albums have been properly remastered and are in noticably better sound than the 2005 re-issues. Alot of time and love has gone into making this the ultimate statement on Sandy for hardcore fans. Andrew |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Will Fly Date: 21 Oct 10 - 07:22 AM As I said earlier, Andrew, the whole package looks beautifully presented - I merely suggested that, for those without the requisite price, or those who have much of her recorded output already, a later re-release of parts of the package might be a good idea. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: GUEST,Ed Date: 21 Oct 10 - 08:32 AM Andrew, I don't think anyone would doubt that it was a 'labour of love' or how hard you have worked on this, and as Will Fly says it looks beautifully presented. Given that most hardcore Sandy fans will (as nearly everyone above has said) already have much of the material, £150 is not a fair price. I'm also somewhat suspicious of the "Strictly limited edition" tag on the Island shop site. I'm not suggesting that the phrase was you decision, but it's a marketing ploy that is only used when the seller doesn't think they'll sell many copies.... A cheaper copy (or download?) of the best unreleased stuff would sell far better, and please many people. Ed |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Reinhard Date: 21 Oct 10 - 01:50 PM I'm beginning to get angry. I bought all of Sandys solo LP for their full price. I bought the original CD reissues for their full price because at that time CDs seemed to be the way to go. I bought the 2005 CD reissues for their full price because they were advertised as digitally remastered which suggested a proper sound. Now you're telling us "Also Sandys solo albums have been properly remastered and are in noticably better sound than the 2005 re-issues." That is, with the first two CD series we have paid lots of money for crap. Now, if we finally want it in proper quality, which we should have gotten before, we are graciously allowed to pay a steep amount of money again. And probably in five years the same game starts over again with the next definitive Sandy Denny box. I am not against paying good money for good worth -- I spend 300 to 500 Euros a month for LPs and CDs. But I am dead agaist being ripped off by having to pay lots of money over and over again just to have a copy of "Lord Bateman". |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Phil Edwards Date: 21 Oct 10 - 06:17 PM No one's forcing anyone to do anything - including reading this thread - but some of us are being strongly urged to shut up. Whether it's likely to have the desired effect is another matter. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: GUEST,Kyle Date: 27 Oct 10 - 10:49 AM Reinhard, one must remember that the same people do not always work for a record label. Andrew clearly had nothing to do with previous Sandy releases (save for the fantastic BBC boxset), and took on this project as a labor of love from the perspective of a fan. As a fan he obviously found the previously released CD versions of Sandy's career to be subpar and took it upon himself to better her legacy. Certainly, as a fellow fan of Sandy Denny, this isn't something to get angry about. |
Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: pghmusiclover Date: 01 Nov 10 - 08:46 PM Just wondered if anyone knows if the individual albums will have separate booklets with liner notes, lyrics, etc? A 72-page book doesn't seem to be very adequate to include much detail for a 19-cd collection! |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: Thomas Stern Date: 24 Nov 10 - 02:10 PM The box has just arrived - have not had time to peruse in depth. Many lovely photos, ephemera, a poster, and book. Many pleasurable hours to listen and read anticipated. Criticisms: The box holding all this is about 12.5x12.5" (LP size)and 3.5" deep. The discs are in two stacks inside the box (in a flimsy plastic form to hold them in place) with the book and ephemera on top. IMO it would have been preferable to place the CDs in 4 stacks, and reduce the width of the box. Also, a heavier cardboard for the box would make it less likely to disintegrate with handling. Each CD is in a gatefold jacket - those cd's which originate from previously issued LPs have tiny photos of the original LP jacket on the back of the sleeve. Those which are NOT from previously issued LP's have NOTHING to indicate what material is contained on the CD - one has to go to the book to get that information. The inside of the gatefold has only song titles, NO notes or recording information. Each of the 19 jackets have a cover photo, and inside photo. IMO each of these jackets should have album title or other identifying text and recording dates, original album covers should have been reproduced as large as possible. The book should have included, but does not, a complete, detailed, chronological discography (see those in the BEAR FAMILY books for a model). Best wishes, Thomas. |

Subject: RE: Sandy Denny 19CD boxed set From: GUEST,Kevin Date: 02 Dec 10 - 08:55 AM I have my copy, but I am not opening it until Christmas. It is disappointing that the individual CD covers are poorly presented. Producers of boxsets should understand that collectors desire this information, and it is ONLY collectors that buy such sets. Nevertheless, a HUGE thank you to the producers of this box. It is wonderful. If any of you can order it from blowitoutahere.com, they sold me a new sealed copy for US$206, which is very good, and better than 20% less than anyone else. |

The record label has informed us that customers can order a free replacement tray from sandydenny@sandbag.uk.com should this be required. Great music! Too bad about the people who design the packaging. I suppose it is the "artsy" set who have not a clue to the practical issues which need to be considered when preparing collector sets.
