Subject: Remembering Sandy Denny From: michaelr Date: 21 Apr 03 - 03:49 PM Today is the 25th anniversary of the death of Sandy Denny, former Fairport Convention singer and songwriter par excellence. I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling her loss keenly on this day, as it was her voice that first got me interested in Brit-folk. She was 31 when she died. It's saddening to think about what she could have achieved had she lived (she'd be 56 now.) I won't be able to hear it, but I see that BBC 2 radio will air a tribute Wednesday at 8 p.m. Cheers, Michael |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: Alba Date: 21 Apr 03 - 03:58 PM Sorely missed. I remember the first time I heard her sing. I prefare to think of the music she left us to listen to than to think what she would have achieved by now if she had remained with us.That is too mindboggling to even contemplate! Wish I could hear the BBC2 Tribute over here in the States. Thank you for the reminder Michael. |

Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: Lanfranc Date: 21 Apr 03 - 06:20 PM Ye gods - is it really 25 years ago? Sandy solo, Sandy and the Strawbs, Sandy with Fairport, Sandy with Fotheringay - indelible memories all. Not an easy lady to forget, and thanks to the miracle of recording, she can still haunt me. Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: Wolfgang Date: 23 Apr 03 - 09:17 AM If you already love her music you're bound to know the site I'm going to post below. However, if you come here out of curiosity and want to know more about her (bio, pictures, lyrics, discography to name but a few entries) you may want to go to Reinhard Zierke's Sandy Denny site Wolfgang |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: nickp Date: 24 Apr 03 - 04:05 AM Well, to be honest I was only listening to (part of) Mike Harding's tribute show in the car (although I left it taping at home) but did I really hear record clicks, scratches and jumps???? (The Sea, Banks of the Nile and Solo spring to mind). Surely not! But if so, can't the BBC afford to replace LPs - they could have borrowed my CDs if they were desperate. I hope I was imagining it! I suppose I shouldn't complain because it was a well meant and worthwhile prog. You're still sadly missed Sandy. |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Apr 03 - 04:34 AM Sandy did the opening night at The Coach and Horses in Kew, when I ran it all those years ago, a great night was had by all. Cut down in her prime. Recuerdos Giok |

Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: Ralphie Date: 26 Apr 03 - 03:34 AM nickp... Have just listened to the show on the Beeb website, and no signs of cracks, jumps etc there!! I'm presuming that the broadcast was from a CD-R, (Most progs are now, except for a few traddies who still work with tape...me for instance!!), and , although a very convenient way of getting a programme to air (No whirling metal spools to amputate unwary fingers, etc!) The downside is that any imperfections on the disc can cause glitching. Maybe this is what you heard? Anyway, A fine tribute to Sandy nonetheless....Should have been the whole evening though IMHO !! Hope that helps Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: okthen Date: 26 Apr 03 - 04:13 AM Ralphie, any news on the Richard Thompson show or did I miss it? |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: Ralphie Date: 26 Apr 03 - 05:55 AM okthen... Last Nights Kershaw apparently...should be on the R3 site now... Just checked, and indeed it is!!! Enjoy! Regards Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: GUEST Date: 26 Apr 03 - 06:48 AM Thanks Ralphie, could also have been due to swapping between transmitters as I drove. Now I'd better go and hunt out the Richard one... |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: Ralphie Date: 26 Apr 03 - 06:57 AM Slight Thread drift here... Just heard AK's mention of recording Jim Eldon on a boat bobbing about on the North Sea. I was hoping that, that idea had gone away!! Apparently not...Anyone seen any cheap lifejackets on E-Bay recently? Have this bizarre vision of Mr Eldon performing "Bat out of Hell" on a solo fiddle, as AK and I drift off slowly into the sunset!! Ah Well, it's one way of earning a living I suppose. Regards Ralphie |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: GUEST,Nickp cookieless and too lazy... Date: 26 Apr 03 - 12:10 PM Ralphie, have just spent a pleasant hour with the MD I made of Mike's show. I unresevervedly withdraw any complaints and blame the atmosphere and a bad case of traveller's ear! Cheers, Nick |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: GUEST,Leo Date: 26 Apr 03 - 12:12 PM anyone know if the show is still on the BBC website? I couldn't find it. Sandy has fast become my favourite singer of all time, traditional or otherwise. Banks of the Nile is just unbeatable. |
Subject: RE: Remembering Sandy Denny From: Noreen Date: 26 Apr 03 - 12:39 PM It's still there, Leo, until the next programme on Weds. http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/folk/mike_harding/index.shtml (click here) and click on 'listen again'. Thanks michael, for posting this. Looking forward to hearing it- I missed it (and the RT prog) as I was away. |
