Subject: Hitchin May Day Song From: Murpholly Date: 15 Mar 13 - 03:34 PM I have the words for this May Day Song but cannot track down a tune. Can anyone help? |
Subject: RE: Hitchin May Day Song From: Steve Gardham Date: 15 Mar 13 - 04:00 PM As far as I know the Hitchin version only exists in text form from the early 19th century as published by Hone, Dixon etc. However most of the May Songs are pretty much the same and I doubt if the tune was much different from the well-known tune. There is a tune for a midlands version in Broadwood's collection recently reprinted by Lewis Jones of Birmingham. I can give you his contact details if you PM me. |
Subject: RE: Hitchin May Day Song From: Steve Gardham Date: 15 Mar 13 - 04:11 PM Apologies, if it's John Broadwood it will be Sussex based. I have found a tune from Langley which is a few miles to the south of Hitchin. It's in Lucy Broadwood's English County Songs, p109. If you PM me your email address I'll scan you a copy. |
