MARION /LO GIBÓS /LO BOSSUT (Occitan)

Marion jos un pomiò
Que se pimpolhava
Que se pimpolhava d'aicí,
Que se pimpolhava d'ailà,
Que se pimpolhava.

Un gibós ven a passar
Que l'agachava

"Marion se o voliás
Seriás ma mestressa"

"Gibós per que siague aital
Cal copar la giba"

Un còp la giba copada
Lo gibós plorava
MARION /THE HUNCHBACK / THE HUMPBACK

Marion, under an appletree
Was dolling herself up
Was dolling herself up here,
Was dolling herself up there
Was dolling herself up.

A hunchback happened to pass by
Who was looking at her

"Marion, if you wanted to,
You'd be my mistress"

"Hunchback, for it to be so,
You have to cut your hump"

Once the hump was cut,
The hunchback was crying.
This song can be found in many places in different versions. The girl's called Marion (pet name for Mary, now a name of its own), sometimes Margoton (diminutive of Margot, pet name for Marguerite). In all the versions the hunchback deeply regrets to have cut his hump (probably because she didn't want him as a boyfriend even without his hump!)

On Monday 16th, Gerry sang "Oseh Shalom".

He said, "The version of Oseh Shalom I did, the musical setting by Michael Hunter Ochs, adds one phrase to the Hebrew.
Leaving out the repetitions, it goes,

Oseh shalom bimromav,
hu ya'aseh shalom aleinu,
v'al kol Yisrael,
v’al kol ha olam.

Which can be translated as,
'May the One who makes peace in the high heavens
make peace for us,
for all Israel
and all the world.'

But any actual performance of the Ochs setting will include lots of repetition. The details of the repetition are to some extent up to the singer (or the choir director).
What I sang, including repeats, was this:

[Oseh shalom bimromav,
Hu ya'aseh shalom aleinu,] x3

Ya'aseh shalom, ya'aseh shalom,
Shalom aleinu, v'al kol Yisrael
Ya'aseh shalom, ya'aseh shalom,
Shalom aleinu, v’al kol yoshvei teiveil,

Ya'aseh shalom, ya'aseh shalom,
Shalom aleinu, v'al kol Yisrael
Ya'aseh shalom, ya'aseh shalom,
Shalom aleinu,
V'al kol Yisrael x3
V’al kol yoshvei teiveil.

The last line, 'V’al kol yoshvei teiveil', translates as 'and all who inhabit the earth.'"

A LA TOR DE MARMANDA
Occitan (Gascon)

A la tor de Marmanda
Bèth presonèr i avè

Beth presonèr i avè
Landeridèr.

Arrès non l'i va véder
Véder ni visitèr.

Senon la bèra Jana,
La hilha deu jaulièr.

Era li pòrta a béver
A béver e a minjèr.

"Digatz, Jana, m'aimia
Que s'i conda de moèr?"

"Non s'i conda auta causa
Galant, morir calè"

"Puishque cau que jo morí
Ça'i, desliga'm lo pè"

Autanlèu qui 'sté libre
Dehens l'aiga sautè.

A la primèr' ondada,
Tant pregond s'afoncèc.

A la segond' ondada
De l'aiga ne sortèc

Quand siè sus l'autra riba
Per Joaneta cantèc

E tant urós de viure,
Cent potons li mandèc
IN THE TOWER OF MARMANDA

In the tower of Marmanda (Marmande in French)
There was a handsome prisoner. Landerideta
There was a handsome prisoner
Landerider

Nobody would go see him,
See him nor visit him either.

But the beautiful Jane,
The keeper's daughter.

She would bring him drink,
Drink and food.

"Tell me, Jane, my dear,
What do they tell about me?"

"They don't talk about anything but that
You, my handsome boy, must die"

"Since I must die,
Set my foot free"

As soon as he was free,
He jumped into the water.

At the first wave,
He went very deep,

At the second wave
He went out of the water

When he was on the other shore
For Joaneta he sang.

And so happy to be alive
A hundred kisses he sent her
Rendition by Joan-Francés Tisnèr

MON VIEUX (French)
(Michelle Senlis -1933-2020 Daniel Guichard 1948- / Jean Ferrat -1930-2010)

Dans son vieux pardessus râpé
Il s'en allait l'hiver, l'été
Dans le petit matin frileux
Mon vieux
Y'avait qu'un dimanche par semaine
Les autres jours, c'était la graine
Qu'il allait gagner comme on peut
Mon vieux
L'été, on allait voir la mer
Tu vois, c'était pas la misère
C'était pas non plus le paradis
Eh ouais, tant pis

Dans son vieux pardessus râpé
Il a pris, pendant des années
Le même autobus de banlieue
Mon vieux
Le soir, en rentrant du boulot
Il s'asseyait sans dire un mot
Il était du genre silencieux
Mon vieux
Les dimanches étaient monotones
On ne recevait jamais personne
Ça ne le rendait pas malheureux
Je crois, mon vieux

Dans son vieux pardessus râpé
Les jours de paye, quand il rentrait
On l'entendait gueuler un peu
Mon vieux

On a à peine ouvert les yeux
Nous deux
J'aurais pu, c'était pas malin
Faire avec lui un bout de chemin
Ça l'aurait peut-être rendu heureux
Mon vieux
Mais quand on a juste quinze ans
On n'a pas le cœur assez grand
Pour y loger toutes ces choses-là
Tu vois
Papa
MY OLD MAN

In his old, threadbare overcoat
He would go off, in summer, in winter
In the little, cold morning
My old man
There was only one Sunday a week
The rest of the week, he would work
To earn money like he could
My old man
In summer, we would go to the sea
You know, it wasn't misery
It wasn't paradise either
But oh well

In his old, threadbare overcoat
Several years long he took
The same suburb bus
My old man
In the evening, as he'd come back from work
He would sit down without saying a word
He was the silent type
My old man
Every Sunday was monotonous
We never had any guests
But he wasn't sad about it
I guess, my old man

In his old, threadbare overcoat
On paydays, when he'd come back home
We could hear him shouting a little
My old man
To us, it was always the same old song
He'd ramble on about everything—rich people, bosses
The left wing, the right wing, even God
That was my old man
We didn't have TV at home
Instead, I'd go out for a walk
For a few hours, to take my mind off things
That's dumb, ya know!

To think I spent several years
Next to him without ever giving him a look
We barely opened our eyes
The two of us
It wasn't very clever of me 'cause I could
Have walked with him to the bus stop
Perhaps he would've liked it
My old man
But when you're just fifteen
Your heart isn't big enough
To hold all those things in
You see
Now that he's far from here
When I remember all this, I think to myself
'I wish he were by my side right now'
Dad.

Daniel Guichard's 2015 live rendition.

"In 1962, Michelle Senlis wrote the text My Old Man in homage to her father, a text that Jean Ferrat put to music in 1963. The same year, the song was performed by two singers, Jacques Boyer and Jean-Louis Stain. On November 7, 1963, Michelle Senlis' father died; she then requested the song no longer be exploited. However, in 1974, she agreed to co-sign Daniel Guichard's remake. Later, she declared that she regretted this gesture because she criticized Daniel Guichard for having performed the song in 1973 with modified lyrics without her agreement and that "everyone" hid it from her when signing. Furthermore, following the enormous success by Daniel Guichard's remake, Michelle Senlis said she had a hard time with the 'false connection' that journalists made between Daniel Guichard and the song." -French Wikipedia

QUÉ DIRÁ EL SANTO PADRE (Spanish)
Violeta Parra (1917-1967)

Miren cómo nos hablan de libertad,
cuando de ella nos privan en realidad.
Miren como pregonan tranquilidad,
cuando nos atormenta la autoridad.

Estribillo
Qué dirá el Santo Padre
que vive en Roma
que le están degollando
a su paloma.

Miren cómo nos hablan del paraíso,
cuando nos llueven penas como granizo.
Miren el entusiasmo con la sentencia,
sabiendo que mataban a la inocencia.

(Estribillo)

(Estribillo)

Mientras más injusticias, señor fiscal,
más fuerza tiene mi alma para cantar.
Lindo segar el trigo en el sembrao,
regado con tu sangre, Julian Grimao.

(Estribillo)
WHAT WILL THE HOLY FATHER SAY

Look how they talk to us about freedom,
While they actually deprive us of it.
Look how they proclaim tranquility,
While authority torments us.

Chorus
What the Holy Father will say,
Who lives in Rome,
As they are slitting the throat
To his dove.

Look how they talk to us about paradise,
While sorrows rain down on us like hail.
Look at the enthusiasm about the sentence,
Knowing that they were killing innocence.

(Chorus)

He who officiates death like an executioner,
Calmly he is eating breakfast from him.
With that, they got themselves in a mess,
The fifth commandment has no seal.

(Chorus)

The more injustices, Mr. Prosecutor,
The more my soul has strength to sing.
[It's] Nice to reap the wheat in the sown field,
Watered with your blood, Julian Grimau*.

(Chorus)
*Julián Grimau García (18 February 1911 – 20 April 1963) was a Spanish politician, member of the Communist Party of Spain, executed during Francisco Franco's Francoist State. (Wikipedia)

Recording by Violeta Parra herself!
Live rendition by her daughter Isabel Parra
1973 live rendition by Quilapayún
2007 live recording by Quilapayún
"Qué dirá el Santo Padre" YouTube page

In this Violeta's recording, the lyrics are slightly different:
Verse 2, line 2 "Cuando nos llueven balas como granizo" (While bullets rain down on us like hail)
Verse 3 the last two lines are swapped with those of verse 4 and vice versa. "across what is sown")

Quand dorbiren la casseta, n'i trobèren... tres pèls blancs!
THE OLD WOMAN FROM PIBRAC

In Pibrac there's an old woman who's over eighty years old
She goes to every all-nighter to find herself a sweetheart.

Chorus
Ah! The old woman, ah, the old woman who thinks she's twenty years old.

She has entered the dance in the circle of the spry ones,
She chooses for the contradance the most charming young man.

(Chorus)

She tells him in his ear, "Listen to me, my child,
I'll pay for your drinking if you get married to me this year!"

(Chorus)

"Not to you, poor old woman, had you even twenty thousand francs!
-I have a hundred thousand in my purse, in my chest I have as much!

(Chorus)

-If you have so much in your little purse, we could see… in a year!
In a year, says the old woman, we'll get married tomorrow!"

(Chorus)

So, she orders the lawyer to bring white paper
On the Monday she was engaged, on the Tuesday she was wed,

(Chorus)

On the Wednesday he beat her, on the Thursday she was weeping,
On the Friday she was dead, on the Saturday she was buried.

(Chorus)

On the Sunday, the novena, on the Monday, the anniversary mass,
When they opened the chest, they found there… three white hairs!
There are many versions of this song in French.

Here is a French version of the song I sang last week.
À PARIS Y'A UNE VIEILLE (French)

À Paris y a une vieille, ouais ! (x2)
Qui a plus de quatre-vingts ans
Ran tan plan la vieille
Qui a plus de quatre-vingt ans
Ran tan plan !

La vieille vint à la danse, ouais ! (x2)
Et s'assit près d'un galant
Ran tan plan....

Beau galant si tu m'épouses, ouais ! (x2)
Te ferai riche marchand
Ran tan plan....

Je n'épouse pas les vieilles, ouais ! (x2)
Dont je n'ai pas vu les dents
Ran tan plan...

La vieille se mit à rire, ouais ! (x2)
Et montra deux dents devant
Ran tan plan...

La première était tout' noire, ouais !
La seconde s'en va branlant
Ran tan plan...

Le mardi l'enterrement
Ran tan plan...

La moral' de cette histoire, ouais ! (x2)
C'est qu'il faut s' laver les dents
Ran tan plan…
IN PARIS THERE'S AN OLD WOMAN

In Paris there's an old woman, yeah! (x2)
Who is over eighty years old
Rat-a-tat-tat, the old woman
Who is over eighty years old
rat-a-tat-tat!

The old woman came to the dance, yeah! (x2)
And sat down near a gallant*
Rat-a-tat-tat....

Handsome gallant if you marry me, yeah! (x2)
I will make you a rich merchant
Rat-a-tat-tat....

I don't marry old women, yeah! (x2)
Whose teeth I didn't see
Rat-a-tat-tat...

The old woman started laughing, yeah! (x2)
And showed two front teeth
Rat-a-tat-tat...

The first one was all black, yeah!
The second goes wobbly
Rat-a-tat-tat...

On Monday there was the wedding, yeah! (x2)
On Tuesday, the funeral
Rat-a-tat-tat...

The moral of this story, yeah! (x2)
Is you have to brush your teeth
Rat-a-tat-tat …
*Here "marriageable young man"

When I was a child, we would sing after the last verse, 'Le meilleur des dentifrices, c'est le dentifrice Tsoin-Tsoin'." (Translation: "The best toothpaste, is the toothpaste called Tsoin-Tsoin." "Tsoin-Tsoin" is the sound cymbales make like "crash clang".

Here I found more verses as follows:

-Le meilleur des dentifrices, c'est le dentifrice Prodent.
-Le bouchon est en plastique et le tube est en fer-blanc.
-En vente dans toutes les pharmacies au prix de cinq francs seulement.
-Achetez plutôt l' grand tube, il est double et coute neuf francs.
-Réductions familles nombreuses, militaire et bonne d'enfants.

The best toothpaste is Prodent toothpaste.
The cap is plastic and the tube is tinplate.
On sale in all pharmacies for just five francs.
Rather buy the large tube, it's double and costs nine francs.
Large families, soldiers and nannies discounts.

Los esclòps (Occitan)

1 [Quant te costèron, quant te costèron,
Quant te costèron los esclòps?] (x2)
[Quand èran, quand èran,
Quand èran nòus] (x2)

2 Cinc sòus costèron….

3 Ieu los batèri…

4 Ieu los clotèri…

5 Ieu los vernèri…

6 Fasián clic clic clic, fasián clac clac clac…

7 Ieu los trauquèri…

8 Ieu los vendèri…
…Quand èran vièlhs.
The Clogs

1 [How much did cost, how much did cost,
How much did your clogs cost?] (x2)
[When they were, when they were
When they were new] (x2)

2 Five pence they cost….

3 I strapped them…

4 I nailed them…

5 I varnished them…

6 They went clic clic clic, they went clac clac clac…

7 I pierced them…

8 I sold them…
…When they were old.

IN FRONT OF BORDEAUX ARE THE BOATS

In front of Bordeaux are the boats (x2)
And in front of Blaye are the gabarres* (x2)

The master of this boat (x2)
Is night and day in the inns/taverns (x2)

Always with cards in hand (x2)
Gold and silver on the table (x2)

The hostess was always telling him (x2)
"You spend a lot of money" (x2)

Whether I do little or I do enough (x2)
No one will make up for my faults (x2)

Except the plot of the rowan: (x2)
It will make up for my faults (x2)

If that's not enough (x2)
I'll add the plot of the barns (x2)

If all that can't do it (x2)
We'll put in oxen and carts (x2)

If all this is not enough (x2)
I'll go off to war (x2)

"When I come back from the warv,
Beauty, don't be married" (x2)

When I came back from the war (x2)
I found the beauty (girl) married (x2)>br>
Cursed be the night, cursed be the day (x2)
And also the master of war (x2)

If I hadn't gone to war (x2)
I would have had Suzanne's love (x2)

* flat-bottom boats used to carry goods. The ones mentioned here would carry wood on the Dordogne River from the Massif Central to the Gironde estuary formed by the Garonne and the Dordogne rivers. Bordeaux is on the left side of the Garonne River upstream from the confluence and Blaye on the right side of the Gironde estuary.

You can hear this version here at 44:50.
Here it's sung to another tune. This version is slightly shorter.

You can find it in "Les vieilles chansons patoises du Périgord" by E. Chaminade and E. Casse, Ed. Cassard, 1903, downloadable from the Bordeaux University website, image #99.
You can also find it in the same pdf at archive.org BUT for some reason some scores are missing.
For those interested and who understand French, you'll find in the introduction of the book a long explanation about the way they transcribed the language in its Périgord variety, i.e. according to its pronunciation but written in the French spelling system. The spelling I've used above is the now standardized Occitan one based on the way troubadours wrote in the Middle Ages and that each of us pronounce according to our own dialect.

LA NOIRIÇA (Occitan)

Lou rei a 'na nouriça
Pus bèla que lou jour.
Lou rei a 'na nouriça
Liroun lanfà de lalireta,
Pus bèla que lou jour,
Liroun lanfà de lalirà.

Ela s'es endormida
Lo Dalfin al costat

Quand s'es desrevelhada
L'a trobat estofat

Es sortida, pecaire!
Per se'n anar negar

Lo rei a la fenestra
Que l'a vista passar

"On te vas, tu, noiriça?
Lo Dalfin va plorar.

Monta dins ta cambreta
E vai te'n cordurar."

Al primièr còp d'agulha,
Justicia n'a montat.

Al second còp d'agulha
Potencia n'a dreiçat

Quand foguèt sus l'escala
Lo Dalfin a parlat:

"Pendètz pas ma noiriça
Non l'a pas meritat!

Aquò es la sirventa
Que m'a empoisonat."
THE NURSE

The king has a [wet] nurse
More beautiful that daylight
The king has a nurse
Liroun lanfà de lalireta,
More beautiful that daylight
Liroun lanfà de lalirà.

She fell asleep
With the Dauphin/Crown Prince by her side

When she woke up
She found him suffocated

She went out, poor dear!
To go drown herself

The king by the window
Saw her pass by.

"Where are you going, nurse,
The Dauphin will cry.

Go up to your [little] bedroom
And sew."

At the first needle stitch
The justice went up.

At the second needle stitch,
The gallows was put up.

When she was on the steps
The Dauphin spoke:

"Don't hang my nurse,
she didn't deserve it!

It's the servant
Who poisoned me."
This is the Narbonne version of it that can be found in "Anthologie de la chanson occitane" by Cécile Marie, G.P. Maisonneueve et Larose, Paris, 1975. Three Occitan versions can be found in Recueil de chansons populaires, III by Eugène Rolland.

I couldn't find an Occitan rendition of the song but here is a French version of it. The song is originally Occitan.

Yesterday Gerry sang "Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu" (aka Salaam) by Mosh Ben-Ari of Sheva (1970 - )

Salaam (Hebrew: סלאם‎?) or Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu (Hebrew: עוד יבוא שלום עלינו?) is a peace song by Mosh Ben-Ari, composed while he was in the band Sheva. It is sung in Hebrew and Arabic and has gained popularity in Israeli folk music, especially within the context of the Arab–Israeli conflict.
The song typically begins slowly and somewhat plaintively, and, as it repeats, gradually increases in tempo and excitement. (From Wikipedia

Lyrics of Salaam, from the bridge:

On Monday Heather sang the first verse of "Christ lag in Todesbanden", hymn by Martin Luther, cantata version by JS Bach, in both German and English.
CHRIST LAG IN TODESBANDEN (German)

Christ lag in Todesbanden
Für unsre Sünd gegeben,
Er ist wieder erstanden
Und hat uns bracht das Leben;
Des wir sollen fröhlich sein,
Gott loben und ihm dankbar sein
Und singen halleluja,
Ha-a-al-le-lu-u-u-u-ja!
CHRIST LAY IN DEATH'S BONDS

Christ lay in death's bonds
Handed over for our sins,
He is risen again
And has brought us life
For this we should be joyful,
Praise God and be thankful to him
And sing hallelluia,
Halleluia!

MAY IT BE
Naomi Shemer/John Lennon & Paul McCartney - Noami Shemer

Here is still a white sail on the horizon
Opposite a heavy black cloud
All that we ask for - may it be
And if in the evening windows
The light of the holiday candles flickers
All that we seek - may it be

May it be, may it be
- Please - may it be
All that we seek - may it be.

What is the sound that I hear
The cry of the shofar and the sound of drums
All that we ask for - may it be
If only there can be heard within all this
One prayer from my lips also
All that we seek - may it be

May it be...

If the messenger should come to the door,
Place kindly words on his mouth.
All that we seek, may it be!
If your soul asks to die
Only after blossoming and harvest time,
All that we seek, may it be!

May it be...

Within a small, shaded neighborhood
Is a small house with a red roof
All that we ask for, may it be
This is the end of summer, the end of the path
Allow them to return safely here
All that we seek, may it be

May it be...

And if suddenly, rising from the darkness
Over our heads, the light of a star shines
All that we ask for, may it be
Then grant tranquility and also grant strength
To all those we love
All that we seek, may it be

May it be....

On Monday, Gayle sang "L'aquila" in Italian. The song was first written by Lucio Battisti (1943- 1998) and Mogol (alias for Giulio Rapetti 1936 - ) for Bruno Lauzi (1937-2006) who published it 1971.
L'AQUILA (Italian)
Mogol (= Giulio Rapetti 1936 - )/ Lucio Battisti (1943- 1998)

Il fiume va
Guardo più in là
Un'automobile corre
E lascia dietro sé
Del fumo grigio e me
E questo verde mondo
Indifferente perché
Da troppo tempo ormai
Apre le braccia a nessuno
Come me che ho bisogno
Di qualche cosa di più
Che non puoi darmi tu
Un'auto che va
Basta già
A farmi chiedere se
Io vivo

Mezz'ora fa
Mostravi a me
La tua bandiera d'amore
Che amore poi non è
E mi dicevi che
Che io dovrei cambiare
Per diventare come te
Che ami solo me
Ma come un'aquila può
Diventare aquilone
Che sia legata oppure no
Non sarà mai di cartone, no
Cosa son io non so
Ma un'auto che va
Basta già
A farmi chiedere se
Io vivo

Basta già
A farmi chiedere se
Io vivo

Il fiume va
(Sa dove andare)
Guardo più in là
(In cerca d'amore)
Un'automobile corre
(Non ci son nuove terre)
E lascia dietro sé
Del fumo grigio e me
E questo verde mondo
(Nel quale mi confondo)
Indifferente perché
Da troppo tempo ormai
Apre le braccia a nessuno
Come me che ho bisogno
Di qualche cosa di più
Che non puoi darmi tu
Ma un'auto che va
Basta già
A farmi chiedere se
Io vivo
THE EAGLE
(Translation by Gayle)

The river goes
I look further away
A car goes by
And leaves behind it
Some grey smoke and me
And this green world
Indifferent because
For too long now
It hasn't opened its arms to anyone
Like me who needs
Something more
Which you can't give me
A car that goes by
Is already enough
To make wonder if
I live

Half an hour ago
You showed me
Your flag of love
Which is not really love.
And you told me that
That I should change
To become like you
Who love only me
But how can an eagle
Become a paper kite?
Whether it's tied to a string or not
It will never be made of cardboard, no
What I am? I don't know
But a car that goes by
Is already enough
To make wonder if
I live

Is already enough
To make wonder if
I live

The river runs
(It knows where to go)
I look further away
(Looking for love)
A car goes by
(There are no new destinations)
And leaves behind it
Some grey smoke and me
And this green world
(In which I lose myself)
Indifferent because
For too long now
It hasn't opened its arms to anyone
Like me who needs
Something more
Which you can't give me
A car that goes by
Is already enough
To make wonder if
I live

PARLE-MOI DE TA VIE (French) sung by Sylvie Vartan
(P.Bourtayre / Y.Dessca) 1971

Voilà trois ans passés depuis, pourtant, ça me semble être hier

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR LIFE

It's been three years already, and yet it seems to me that it was just yesterday
And if I'm writing you today, it's because I'm leaning towards the past
Don't think I have regrets, but I'd like it if, from time to time,
You wrote me what you're up to, how time goes by for you

Tell me about your life and recount your days to me,
Tell me about your life, what about your love affairs?

Since two months now, I've been the mother of a little girl with big bright eyes
It's crazy! Every little thing she does, she's just like her father
Are you still a Bonapartist? Do you still have in your living-room
That huge map of Austerlitz, the bust of Napoleon?

Tell me about your life and recount your days to me,
Tell me about your life, what about your love affairs?

I'm living comfortably, he's very nice with me
I'm sincerely devoted to him, but it's so different from you
One more note, if you write me, if you ever find the time to
But above all, don't send it here, send it to my mom's

Tell me about your life and recount your days to me,
But above all, I beg you, don't talk to me about love
Tell me about your life and recount your days to me,
But above all, I beg you, don't talk to me about love

On Monday Gerry sang…
A SONG FOR PEACE (Hebrew)
Lyrics: Yaakov Rotblit (1945 - ), music: Yair Rosenblum (1944 - ).

Allow the sun to rise,
The morning to light up.
The strength of prayers
Will not bring us back.
He whose candle passed away
And is lying in dust,
Bitter tears won't wake him up,
And won't bring him back

Nobody will bring us back
From the deep and dark pit.
Here will not help
Neither the victory cheer,
Nor hymns of praise.

So just sing
A song for peace,
Don't whisper a prayer.
Better sing
A song for peace,
In a loud shout.

Allow the sun to penetrate
Through the flowers.
Don't look back,
Let rest in peace the departed
Lift your eyes with hope,
Not through a rifle line of sight.
Sing a song for love,
Not for wars.

Don't say "the day will come"*,
Make this day happen!
For it is not a dream,
And in all the city squares
Cheer for peace!

IL M'A VUE NUE (1927 - French)
Lyrics Max Eddy – Rip / Music Fred Pearly - Pierre Chagnon

Un soir, je faisais une pleine eau.
Pour tout maillot, j'avais la peau,
Nul ne pouvait me voir
Que le ciel noir.
La lune soudain vint s'exhiber,
J'allais lui dire: "Ta bouche, Phoebé!"
Quand j'entendis près d' moi
Un cri d'émoi.
Y avait un homme sur un rocher,
Pas assez haut.
L'homme a fait "Ah!" et moi,
Dans l'eau,
Moi, j'ai fait "Oh!"

Refrain
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue,
Sans cache-truc ni soutien-machins,
J'en ai rougi jusqu'aux vaccins.
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue,
Je me suis, par respect humain,
Voilé la face de mes deux mains.
Mais je crois bien
Que par ce geste irréfléchi
J'ai négligé d' voiler quelques petits chichis.
Il m'a vue nue,
Toute nue,
Plus que nue.

Pendant qu'il descendait d' ce rocher,
Moi, je me suis mise à nager.
J'atterris rapid'ment,
J' prends mes vêt'ments.
Mais, comme un gibier à poil, voilà
Qu'il me poursuivit, oh ! Là ! Là !
J' cours pour le dépister
Sans m'arrêter,
Et je pensais :
Il va me rejoindre bientôt,

Tell'ment nue,
Super-nue.
HE SAW ME NAKED

One evening I had a bath in the sea,
As a swimsuit I only had my skin,
No one could see me
But the black sky.
The moon suddenly came to show itself,
I was going to tell her, "Shut up, Phoebe!"
When I heard near me
A cry of emotion.
There was a man on a rock,
Not high enough.
The man said "Ah!" and I,
In the water,
Said "Oh!"

Chorus
He saw me naked,
All naked,
Without hiding-thingy(1) or supporting-thingamabob(2),
I blushed up to my vaccine marks*.
He saw me naked,
All naked,
I, out of human respect,
Covered my face with my two hands.
But I believe
That by this thoughtless gesture
I neglected to cover up a few little quibbles.
He saw me naked,
All naked,
More than naked.

While he was coming down from this rock,
I started swimming.
I landed quickly,
I took my clothes.
But, like a furred game(3), there you go,
He pursued me, oh! dear!
I ran without stopping
To disorient him,
And I was thinking:
"He'll catch up with me soon,
Let's hope that he doesn't penetrate my incognito."

Chorus
He saw me naked,
All naked,
He had dashed off like a stinger/spear(4),
But I wasn't late(5)
He saw me naked,
All naked.
I am a young girl, that’s clear,
A bit like Miss Helyett(6).
Because I've been telling myself, since that fatal night,
I can't marry another man but him
He saw me naked,
So naked,
Super-naked.
(1) = euphemism for "cache-sexe": G string
(2) = euphemism for "soutien-gorge" : bra (lit. "bosom support")
* The smallpox vaccine shot was usually done on the high part of the thigh or the arm.
(3) "à poil" (pun): furred but also slang for "naked"
(4) "dard" (pun): stinger, spear and also one of the many slang words for penis, so you can imagine what this "dash off" refers to.
(5) (pun) Lit. "I had no delay/lateness" usually refers to a woman's period.
(6) Miss Helyett is an opérette that depicts the complications ensuing when the excessively puritanical heroine believes herself duty-bound to marry an unknown man who, in rescuing her from a serious fall in the Pyrenees, has been unable to avoid seeing the exposed lower half of her body. -Wiki

(7) Alternate version sung by Mistinguett: no 2nd verse. 2nd chorus as…
Il m'a vue nue, (He saw me naked)
Toute nue, (All naked)
J' veux oublier c' qui s'est passé (I want to forget what happened)
D'autant plus qu'il n'y a rien d' cassé. (All the more as there's nothing broken)
Et je me dis, depuis cette fatale nuit, (And I've been telling myself, since that fatal night)
Je n' peux pas épouser un autre homme que lui (I can't marry another man but him)
Il m'a vue nue, (He saw me naked)
Tell'ment nue,   (So naked)
Super-nue. (Super-naked.)

On Monday, Gerry sang...
YOU AND I
Arik Einstein (1939-2013) / Miki Gavrielov (1949 - )

You and I we'll change the world
you and I by then all will follow
Others have said it before me but
doesn't matter you and I we'll change the world.

You and I we'll try from the beginning
it will be tough for us, no matter, it's not too bad!
Others have said it before me but it
doesn't matter you and I we'll change the world.
ANI VE'ATA (Transliteration)

Ani ve'ata neshaneh et ha'olam
ani ve'ata az yavo'u kvar kulam

I borrowed the translation and transliteration from Hebrew Songs (there's a singable English version at the bottom of the page) and followed their link to the lyrics in Hebrew characters.

You can find a set of Hebrew lyrics including the vowels on Hebrew Language.com.

Live rendition by Arik Einstein with original lyrics, transliteration and English translation in the subtitles.
