I have for the first time down-loaded the whole DT database, and from some cryptic reference somewhere I was under the impression that I could use Song Write to play a number of them. I couldn't get the program to respond.

Does this functionality still exist? Are there any special tricks - beyond an implant for my ageing brain, that is?

Are there any other data bases of SONGS in abc format? There are certainly plenty of great Celtic TUNES.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Regards John

I only intend to hit the submit button ONCE. I wonder what will result?

It's OK John, you must work for a govt. dept. I have to fill in everything in triplicate too.

Cheers,
Alan

Hi- Can you let me know what files you have downloaded? Playing the tunes (in the DOS version) requires PLAY.EXE, PERFORM.EXE, TUNE.ZIP and PKUNZIP.EXE.

Howdy John,

I use an IBM clone and my DOS version of SongWright (and have been doing so for a couple of years). I had to do some experimenting to get them to work smoothly together. My eventual solution was to copy both of them to the same folder in a Windows File program or Explorer. Some files are the same in DT and SW. I had to try several times to get a combination where DT used SW to play and to print its music, but it works fine for me now. Since I was copying both of them into a new folder, I just deleted it wen it didn't work and went back to try another combination of the files that were common to both programs. As long as you're willing to try trial and error (and know that it is possible), you should be able to get it. I didn't mark down which files I used from where, and since it's been a while since I did it, it may take a while to reconstruct what comes from where. But if it's beyond your current computer abilities, e-mail me and I'll try to help you work it out from my limited knowledge.

Allinkausay,
Bill

The programs we supply are based on a a (licensed) subset of Songwright; our tunes are ZIPped SW files. Creative fussing shouldn't really be required.

Howdy Dick,

That was what I thought when I bought the SongWright program. A friend had done the same kind of thing with no extra effort, but I certainly had to do some fussing. Hopefully it works smoothly for others.

Allinkausay,
Bill

Thanks for the feedback guys. There's little science in this but I down-loaded to four floppies instead of one big dump and I can now play the tunes.

I'm a bit confused about what is available on SW on the limited release and what I may pay for.

With the free download I am unable to:

- Vary the playback in any way in terms of tempo or pitch

- Vary any of the notes if I think that they should be different

- Print any sheet music

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

In relation to another thread involving Mr Greenhaus, I was really tickled at how well the DOS version performs. This now means that I can get some musical friends involved who do not have the latest and greatest PC hardware. Well done. My only suggestion is that the inclusion of a Text File which provides some details and/or limitations on the use of Song Wright might give new starters a helping hand.

Kind regards John

You've summarized the limitations of our free download very concisely. If you have the complete SongWright program, you can transpose, edit, print, export to MIDI and all sorts of other good stuff.
