This might be old news, but I just discovered that midis for the songs (and teach-in tunes) printed in Sing Out! (back to V. 39 #1, at least) are now available on their web site, among other resources. There's no index on line, but I believe the songs are indexed in print every so often.

(I also just discovered that under the latest issue's songs they've got the ones for the previous issue, by accident, but no doubt that'll get fixed eventually! I did notify them.)

The best Sing Out! resource is a subscription. Each issue now comes with a cd that contains a full performance of every song in the issue.

Well, Bennet, that sort of depends on your subscription, doesn't it? If you pay twice as much you get the CD, otherwise you get just the magazine. Fair enough, but your statement above might be considered false advertising.

Here's the subscription information I found on the Sing Out! membership page (click). Looks like it's $25 a year without the CD, $50 a year with.

I don't like midi & notation stuff online that costs money (naturally I'll exclude shopping online for music/method books & recordings of artists right now)!! I think that the www ought to be about having access to information on the www. I understand the copyright issue, (#$&%*%!durn revenoors!!) but I'm mainly into "traditional" music anyway!

Kaleea, the SO! midis online are provided at no charge, thus useful to subscribers and non-subscribers alike (though they're not indexed).

this is good noews as the songs in the book do not have notation, just lyrics and chords and in case you don't know the tune, now you can get a clue!

Oy, this gets confusinger and confusinger. As far as I can tell, all of the song MIDIs on the Sing Out! site are from the magazine, and they do have musical notation in the magazine.

But yes, it would be nice if Sing Out! would publish MIDIs for their Rise Up Singing songbook. $175 for their teaching tapes/CD's is a lot of moola.

It would be nice to do a lot of things for free. However, Sing Out pays its staff and its contributors, as well as the collectors/editors of Rise Up, and the performers on the teacheing cds and tapes. None of these people make a very fancy living from this work and we are often behind in our payments to them.

As a result of all of the above, we have to charge for our publications and can't afford to make it all available for free.
