Subject: RE: BS: Copyright on Silence From: Skipjack K8 Date: 19 Jul 02 - 05:40 AM To plagiarize a commentator on Front Row, the BBC Radio 4 daily arts programme that reported a huge increase in their mailbag after the Batt/Cagg circus was mentioned, as the two minute silence observed every Armistice day is 'traditional', the credits on the disc should read 'Trad, arranged by Batt'. Subject: RE: BS: Copyright on Silence From: mooman Date: 19 Jul 02 - 06:42 AM Dear Liz, I have discussed your thong with W L Gore and Co., the makers of the much-discussed-at-Mudcat coated Elixir strings. They say that it should be perfectly feasible to coat your thong using either their polyweb or nanoweb technology. Whichever is chosen, their will be a marked decrease is corrosion and hence increase in thong life. There will also be less friction and unintended noise, so you may have to drop "...the Squeak" part from your Mudcat name. My experience with Elixir technology is that it can definitely help in reaching those difficult-to-get high notes... Vive le Virago! (which reminds me...must send you a photie!) Best regards, mooman

Subject: RE: BS: Copyright on Silence From: Nigel Parsons Date: 23 Jul 02 - 10:33 AM As someone so neatly pointed out in the letters section of The Telegraph today, Mike Batt can refute any claims of plagiarism by stating that he has never heard the original composition! Nigel |
Subject: RE: BS: Copyright on Silence From: Ian Darby Date: 25 Jul 02 - 09:49 PM These boys are on to a good thing. The space between each track on an album could now prove to be a potential source of income. (The first Planxty album had the longest silences between tracks I've ever heard.) Also, Cage's 'silence' was probably recorded using Dolby 'B' noise reduction, whereas Mike Batt may have favoured Dolby 'C'. What about the guy (mentioned earlier) who 'recorded' a silent '45 for use on jukeboxes where punters wanted a bit of peace and quiet, where does he stand? I'm sure he was the first to consider this.... The next step would be to copyright tape hiss. Finally, I don't want to encourage anybody, but if nobody has ever bothered to patent/copyright the twelve bar blues structure, fret noise, or THAT Robert Johnson/Elmore James riff......

Subject: RE: BS: Copyright on Silence From: Genie Date: 27 Jul 02 - 01:17 AM How about copyrighting individual silences of given lengths? E.g,, Could I register a copyright on a half-measure rest? Someone else on a quarter note rest? Genie |
