Just arrived home from our first Sidmouth festival.

Many thanks to AlanWW for introducing us to the Middle Bar, to Councillor for the late night party invitation, to Morticia (sorry you didn't get to visit the 'Party Bus') and Herga Kitty.

Highlight for me was meeting Joy Bennett (Johnson Girls) & Chris Kalderway again and discovering that they have just become engaged. Congratulations!

Sorry to have missed Alison McMorland & Geordie McIntyre who couldn't appear through ill health.

Kepa had a smaller group than when he appeared at the Celtic Connections Festival but was still brilliant to hear & watch. Many people were disappointed to find that the CD's had sold out pretty quickly: luckily I bought mine in January.

A hugely successful festival, and I hope that the appropriate funding appears for underwriting its future.

It was annoying to hear the local radio discuss the false claim that Sidmouth businesses were being asked to 'volunteer' £100 each to deliver the required financing. Could it be that controversy such as this sells more advertising by appearing to be looking after 'local interests'?

I was very impressed with the festival organisation, stewards and back room staff as well as the performers. It seems likely that future years might well focus on participatory events such as the sing-arounds and sessions, though I would expect the Late Night Extra and Morris Dancing to feature strongly.

Good luck next year, and thanks again for this one.

I got back earlier today - I'm absolutely knackered! I worked on the records all week (94 hours!) - got to see Spiers and Boden, and the end of Martin and Norma - and Black Swan Rapper came and danced specially for us record lovelies!!
it seems a bit pointless to get a season ticket when you can't use it!
glad people had a good time - i'm pretty confident it'll be ok next year - just smaller.

Hi,You do live along way from us here in the uk.Whats the folk scene like out with you.I expect you can gather Sidmouth is in crisis and there are ordinary people trying to keep it going for next year while the local council establish some form of festival for the following year.I wish i could travel too,but i have no car and i need to rely on public transport all the time.

Wow! Reading this stuff gets confusing. I live in Texas, USA. I gather Sidmouth is across the water? Wish I could spend time there. Those who complained about the heat may not have enough extreme heat experience to judge. (I understand there are places where it is hotter than Central Texas in the summer. I plan to carefully, deliberately avoid such places.) Festivals are fun places if you have any interest in the theme. Wish I could travel.

I have just talked to my son who is the festival and he says Sidmouth will happen with the fringe events so the rumours going around yesterday.The MBS will still go on i dont know much about the Radway and what they are doing.But the MBS reunion is going ahead as usual in February.
Your question 2 well in the 80's EFDSS gave the festival to Mrs Caseys music and its survived under new management before so it could survive again and be run in the lines of EFDSS ran it in the 80's.I am sure there would be people interested to come back and try out the new management as much as we all did the time before.I think we need to give them a chance to see what comes out of this new management.

1 - how many will trek down to Sidmouth next year for an all-fringe festival with singarounds, dancing on the prom and music sessions everywhere? (a bit like the midwinter MBS and Radway reunions which are becoming a tradition in their own right)

2 - once the majority have gone festivalling elsewhere in 2005, maybe trying out Broadstairs or Whitby for the first time, or going to lots of weekend festivals instead, how many will come back to Sidmouth, under new and inexperienced management?

Been brilliant all week. Today (Fri.) it has just turned to rainy mist. Highlights? Kepa Junkera, Waterson Family, the weather, sessions in the Bedford, could go on.

Today'sa newsletter has a bit of a tear jerker from Mrs. Casey which makes it clear they will not be doing it anymore.

Shame. The organisation is brilliant.


Now off to Hungary for another festival.

We do that in Sidmouth in February we have a name also Middle Bar Singers.We sing for 24 hrs non stop with no repeats and the money we raise goes to some form of charity or the festival.

I do all three synbyn. Fringe at Sidfmouth and Whitby. Performer at Broadstairs. All three entirely different from each other. Broadstairs has the best social side by a long chalk.
Sidmouth seems to roll up the pavements at midnight.
Whitby is fine if you're locked in.
Broadstairs is the only place you can party and play until dawn every night under cover and without disturbing campers and local residents.

No I'm not there or Mrs Compton...We used to go when some thought was made to dance and the odd foreign team was there. It was when cheapo productions used to run it for fourpence...and they didn't need £200,000 in case it bloody rained. Whenit rained, when we go wet. End of story!
So no, we aren't there...and probably 9/10ths of the country are'nt there either!!

I've never been to Sidmouth... too far. & far too dear... it seems to me that Southern folkies do Sidmouth & Northern folkies do Whitby ... Beardy is there, but he is a southerner... I don't think he's too bothered about Whitby but we will both be there... for the first part of the week at least.
At whitby I don't need a ticket, I spend the whole week with friends, I'm not sure I would have the same experience at Sidmouth, anyway because of work committments it has to be one or the other so the hour and a bit journey wins over the several hours one...

Fortunately as I remember the weather was 'ot and I tan easily; first time I saw Bob Copper and Jim LLoyd and a song competition in the beach hut?
Also met and saw Harry Boardman and Rod Shearman, must be in the '70s
Getting to sing was difficult. one year Sean Cannon was booked there and was living in Barnsley, he was having throat problems, funny what u remember!
I'm looking forward to Saltburn and Whitby ff (nearly 35 yrs) and old friends and new in the Tap n Spile
Festivals are for meeting people and I've met and known a lot of 'em
Perhaps one or two Northern based groups could be booked at festivals such as The National and Sidmouth, or am I not looking hard enough?
The Wilson Family for one, as leaders in harmony and tradition would grace any southern festival~ they are diamonds yet to be discovered by many festival organisers.
They'll be at Saltburn along with usually Vin Garbutt and Marie Little, both northern gems

With Sidmouth like any other large festival you have too except that you will never see everything on the programme.Also the festival is what you make out of it and what you enjoy,i remember days of sitting in the Anchor with the MBS then Toby came along and i spent my time in the Arena with times dropping into the Anchor.I dont think i ever left Sidmouth regreting that i missed so much only reliving the friends i had met old and new and what a good holiday i had.
If you want a small festival to go too then try Miskin next Easter,i am sure you have heard of the festival.Its small friendly and you can see most of the programme.I am sure Hawker will back me up on this festival.

I am not one to say whether a festival is good or bad (unless it is REALLY BAD) but Sidmouth is big and varied, there is a lot of what you imagined going on, but there is also a lot going on on the fringe, stuff you don't need to buy a season ticket for and great sing arounds and sessions going on in most pubs. Festivals are what you make of them, they are set up for us to go and enjoy ourselves at. If you like the smaller more friendly festival, you couldn't go far wrong than going to Dartmoor Folk Festival at South Zeal, Devon which starts next Fiday 6th 7th & 8th August wherever you go & whatever you do, enjoy!

Went to Sidmouth a few years back, wouldn't go again. Not enough folk song, too much diddley-diddley, dancing, and "world music". One pub seemed to have the same tune being played all day every day all the time I was there. Which wouldn't have mattered but I had to walk past it when going from my hotel to the main arena. What singing sessions did exist were very in-groupish. "Now my old mate from Exeter would like to sing the same song he sings every year...."

There were some great concerts, and most people seemed to be enjoying themselves no end, my daughter loved it and went again the following year. So I guess it's mainly me being a non-singer non-musician non-dancer. However, my wife took part in the Sidmouth choir, and really enjoyed that, but she wouldn't go back to the festival either. We just love folk songs, and Sidmouth is not the place for that particular niche.

I CAN'T FIND THE DRUMSTICKS NOR THE KEY AND THE THING IS ALL FLOPPY I THE HEAT!!! SERVES YOU RIGHT FOR BUYING PLASTIC!!

People are worried about dinner and their washing not done HAA - don't they know what the important things in life are - at the moment it is wooden drumsticks not chicken ones -

I supose I could always use knitting needles - the big ones which cost a fortune with the full kit to make the jumper that I never made because the only thing to make with that yarn was pan scourers.

I am going to Sidmouth - YAAAAAY!!!

Now can I fit a bicycle in? - good job we got a big car - thank you Mr X Trail. Oh joy joy joy - Sidmouth for a whole week.

Another alternative to Sidmouth - there's a weekend 'folk gathering' at Hardraw (up int Dales) - concerts from 2 -5pm - sessions and singarounds from 5pm - concerts from 8-midnight (even till 1am!) - £8 a day ticket - Bob Fox, Duncan McFarlane Band (acoustic) and Howden/Jones (and MANY more!) - dancing, heck! all sorts of goings-on - all based round the 'Dragon' pub there. I'm off to see DMcF at 3.30 SAt aft and 8pm Sat eve - but it all starts tonight (Fri) and finishes midnight Sunday.

Skip ........ can't agree with you ..... I go to Whitby every year not to be seen but for the crack ......... the first time I went 15 years ago I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. I walked into the Plough on a Saturday lunchtime, unaware the festival even existed, and found not one but 5 separate sessions going, one in the front room, one in each of the back rooms, singing was coming from the club room upstairs and the garden was full of people with instruments and singing.
Never been to Cambridge, doesn't appeal, and Sidmouth is too far, distance wise, and too close to Whitby financially

No Skip - here's my idea of some differences between Cambridge and festivals like Sidmouth and Whitby:
1 - people go to both for the music, but they like different kinds of music
2 - People go to Sidders and Whitby much more to participate, not just to listen. Especially Sidmouth with its numerous workshops.
3 - What Leadfingers said about networking. Though THE networking festival is the National at Sutton Bonington, which is full of organisers who go there to chat, gossip and throw around ideas and plans with each other.

Anyway, I'd hate all festivals to be the same!

Skip , I agree with you to a certain extent , but there is a Hell of a lot of 'networking' at sidders ,as well as some incredible sessions . Whatever your particular preference in Folk is , you ought to find it in at least ONE of the pubs during the week . The English Tune is in The Radway all week The Irish Tune is Top bar at the Anchor
all week , Unaccompanied Singing in the Middle Bar at the Anchor all week , a 'sit in a circle' singaround at The Faulkner every evening and Mixed sessions at The Swan and The NewTavern ,as well as The Bedford which usually has TWO sessions going at a time . Then there are the Theatre Bar and a lot of Movable sessions in other pubs .

We all have our opinions of festivals and listening to radio 2 about Cambridge i believe your right on that issue.I have never been to CambridgE or Whitby,but as all ways peeps will say what a fine festival they are,so who are we to say any different except in what we believe in and thats traditional folk.

I'll probably get shedloads of justifiable flak for this, and my terms of reference are massively flawed in that I've never been to Sidmouth, Whitby or Cambridge. From my reading here, and talking to people, I will venture this observation.

Cambridge seems to be a Folk Music Festival. By folk music, I mean the Louis Armstrong definition ('All music is folk music. I ain't never seen no horse sing a song'). People go to see a wide spectrum of world music, and it exists solely as a series of musical performances. Sidmouth, Whitby and many smaller gatherings seem to be Folk Festivals, where it is being a folkie that is being celebrated, seeing and being seen, and the music encountered is somehow secondary to the cult of 'being there'.

I use to enjoy the festival especially the MBS and the Arena with the foreign sides but i am unable to do what i did in those days.

I have not been for several years and i wondered how many UK mudcatters did not go foe what ever reason.Mine is to ill health before i became ill i went for 20 years.
