Happy Birthday!

William Main Doerflinger

born

7/30/1910
(d Dec 1, 2000)

Buy Shantymen and Shantyboys (reissued as Songs of the Sailor and Lumberman). He was the only person ever to collect "The Leaving of Liverpool" from tradition. Doerflinger was the dean of sea music and one of America's great folk song collectors and scholars. AND, he was a good writer, as well. Don't forget to read the introduction.

Yes I think we brits particularly the Shanty crews should be aware

of Mr Doerflinger and that Stan Hugill of Shanty fame acknowledged

his works in his own 'Shanties from the Seven Seas'

Many thanks to Mr Doerflinger and his collecting efforts!

Ray

I thought I heard old Bill say,
Fire down below-oh-oh-oh-ohh, boys,
Fire down below!
"It's all coil down and get your pay."
Fire down below-oh-oh-oh-ohh, boys,
Fire down below!

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

He used to attend our church (Morristown Unitarian Fellowship, in Morristown, NJ). My parents had two copies of his book (under the original title), but didn't know Bill D. was William D. until quite late in the game! (In time to get an autograph, though!)
