Sorry, mg, but fir the first time in my 57 years on the planet I'm just not feeling either free or patriotic anymore. I mean, even last year I could muster up some rationale to go watch the fireworks, drink a few beers and be somewhat proud to be an American. The last year, I guess, has pushed me (and a lot of others who I know) into a real funk. We are totally disenfranchised and beginning to know just a little what it must have felt to be a slave on Boss Hog's plantation in the 1800's...

Like I said, sorry, you didn't make this happen but you should know that for a lot of Americans, this 4th just doesn't have that luster anymore...

For some reason I keep thinking about when Romania shed off its shackles and the evil Couschecos ?? were gone. I was in Austria at the time, and I might be mixing up my trips, but had also gone to Germany to chip away at the Berlin Wall...the day after Christmas, early in the morning, only me and one other person, chip chip chip. Then I went through Checkpoint Charlie, which I never in my life expected to do. Saw lots of people going both ways, going back with armsful of bananas. Great trouble with the East Germans coming west because they couldn't afford the public bathrooms which charged 50 pfenig..so we would let them in after us for free. By the afternoon when I recrossed, it was more than chip chip chip, it was a symphony of chipping..hundreds of people probably.   And probably a few days later I was in Austria and the evil ones in Romania were poof gone. I couldn't remember my pitiful college German, but I could tell something major was going on. You can feel it in the air. It is a great cleansing feeling. I have a friend who works for Microsoft and went to Romania recently. They are really rooting for the Iraquis she said, and have sent troops there, I think....and soon the Iraquis will join the Romanians and go fix another place. Perhaps they will come to America and fix some of what is wrong with us. More power to them.

someone came around our neighborhood (and MOST areas in Montgomery County, MD., and stuck little plastic flags in front of each house, as if saying that we couldn't be trusted to honor the good things about our country in our own way. My wife expressed it pretty well, "I respect the flag, but not "flag wavers!"

Out here in the boonies, in a US west burning up from the worst drought in centuries, the whump! sound of fireworks being set off in the distance was a little too warlike to be comfortable. Love of country I still have in full measure--we are incredibly lucky to have all we have here-- but this largesse of goods, and the abundant goodwill this nation enjoyed right after 9/11, is being squandered heedlessly and needlessly. What a waste...

Had a fine July 4 over here in Germany. At the 50th anniversary of a tiny fire fighting department in an even tinier village we celebrated our annual firemen's county rally; the parade was longer than the main street. Every 6th or 7th group was a band blaring, fifing and drumming happily away.
Afterwards we met in a giant tent with lots of beer and music. Met a lot of friends I mostly see on such occasions only.

I prefer July 5th, or "What da Fah????? Day." July 5th, celibrates the day that the Patriot Fathers and their Mothers, (Brothers etc...) went to the bank and found, to their drunken dismay, that the British had in fact left, and taken their money with them. In a single voice, through 13 colonies one heard "WHAT THE FAH...." (they remembered they were puritans just in time, or there would be a hard sylable at the end of the holiday...) In tears, George Washington led them down to Francis Taveren, which at the time could hold most of the population of the United States, and they cried into their cold water, the Brits having taken all the beer with them as well, and the water wasn't too cold either, as they had not yet invented ice or diet coke - which WAS being drunk over ice by the Indians but had not been discovered by White Folks yet, so it didn't exist. Well, the day was getting wuser and wuser until it occured to George that we needed 1. a President and B. a war. So he told Shey that he was going to make up for the loss of British gold by taking all the farms away from the soldiers who fought for him, shoot anyone who made whiskey without paying tax (they had all these Tea Tax stamps in desk draws...) so it was back to war. After he killed more members of the old Contenental army then Cornwallis (who just wanted to A) Free the slaves, 2. go home and paint petunias anyway) so where was I, Oh yea, the surviors decided it was better to kill Indians than each other, and continued to do so until they invented the car and needed oil for the engines and politician's hair. Along came the Dixie Chicks and the rest is history.

I'll stop there, as it's pretty long. The whole thing (and a first draft) is at www.ushistory.org. For me, July 4th is a day to remember the ideals of a new and hopeful nation, and a time to think about where we are now in the fulfillment of those ideals.

Larry (InOBU), that was brilliant! Perhaps, it's not a July 5th thing, and July 4th should simply fall on the closest Monday like so many of our holidays. Next year, it WILL be on a Mon, but in 2006, the 4th of July will be on the 3rd. Makes sense to me.

Yes, July 8th, when Pokahantus woke the patriot fathers up, after thier long not so cold water binge, and warned them, that in her oppinon, they better get their colective asses together and prepair for the war of 1812, which she knew was comming because White folks don't forget anything exect how they lost the last war, and where they left their cars on Monday morning. Cars had not yet been invented, or Monday mornings, but... well there was work to be done. And work they did!
They arrested Pokahantus and then drafted the Alien and Sedition Acts so they could charge her under that... and then invented Patriotism and hence, July 8th - Patriotism Day.
On Patriotism day, you arrest the loud mouth you disagree with and invent a law to put them away under... (Today the Justice Dept. is celibrating at the trial of Lynne Stewart)How do you decide who IS a loud mouth? Well that is the person who lets facts get in the way of popular oppinion.
Other great moments of Partriot Day have been forgotten, for example, after the British DID return in 1812, the nation forgot Pokahantus and instead created July 7th Day dedicated to John Smith.

HAPPY Gwiff "Snarch" McGiver Day! July 10 on years when the Missippi is less than flooding, July 10 1/2 when there is a flood.
Gwiff, or Snarch as he was generally know, was the first deserter from a US Army, having deserted the riot on Boston Common, stollen tea during the tea party, fragged his sargent and captain at Bunker Hill, (was aquitted for being drunk at the time) took a pot shot or two at General Washington, hitting Martha's cat "Hamelton" finally tripping while getting out of the boat at the crossing of the delaware, and sleeping through the battle of Newark, waking with the comment, "Can't we get out of New Jersey already?"
GSM day, if generally cellibrated by getting royally souced by 6:30 AM and sleeping through the day, having a big meal of gin and tonic around 10 PM singing half a courus of God save the Quee... and passing out in the lap of who ever is sitting to the left of you. I forget the day that Bush senior barfed on the Japanese Prime Minister, but, I believe it was Gwiff Snarch McGiver Day, or Mr. Bush thought it was. It was his son George's favorite holliday, and George celibrated GSM day for most of his high school and college years. His daughters are carring on in the family tradition which is why they are the only canadates kids, kept in the closet during the campain.

For those who can't remember. Use the knuckles of your left or right hand. If you use your left hand it goes as follows.

Make a fist. Notice how your knuckles make 'mountains and valleys.'
Start at the knuckle of the little finger. That is Jan. Move to the right and Feb is in the valley, March mountain, Apr valley, May mtn, June valley, July mtn, and now return to the knuckle of the little finger. That is Aug mtn. Sept valley, Oct mtn, Nov valley, Dec mtn. All the mountains have 31 days. The valleys have 30. February is the one exception and it has either 729 days or 6421 in a leap year. I was taught that by a kid and it has helped me many times, because the friggin' rhyme never made any sense to me.

His first idea was to make very little soldiers who would eat very compact foods like minute rice, then, someone pronouced minute (little) as minute (60 seconds) and a light went off in his head. When he came too, he invented the minutemen and minute rice at the same go, as well as fast food (food with more fat than any other ingreediant so our soldiers would be fat and short of breath, making for short violent battles) and heart desease.He also invented Uncle Ben, to put a kinder gentler face on slavery, latter making a woman from Ben's rib, who he named Aunt Jemmima - who then became more famous than John by inventing the minute pancake.
Latter in life, to make up for pancakes... John Parker changed his name to Frank Sinatra and invented blue eyes.

Yes, today is the 14 of July, in the USA we call that Bastille Day, the day that the US bombed Puerto Rico to break six drunkards out of the Bastille in Paris, France in responce to a bomb attack on Binghamton, NY by three Figi Islanders armed with a rubber chicken filled with a volitile mixture of vodka and urine. The outcome of the war was a suspention of civil liberities in the US and thousands of deaths of Arroack Natives in Puerto Rico, which was then declared a possesion because they were not yet ready for independance or statehood. The six drunkards invented AA and began the myth of some guy named Bill. Which reminds me, the meeting of 12SA (tweleve steps Anonous) has been, as usual posponed, so that anyone who has not been to any 12 step meetings can send me a post card to recieve their one year or whatever coins... redeamable for what ever your vice is at Molly's (you know where THAT is!)

Thank you YOR: That was very cool... Everyone in the world should look at this. Really, I am not being sarcastic. However, it is not July 4. You will note that the Verrasono Bridge is behind and to the right of the Statue of Liberty, where New Jersey really is. This phomoninon only occurs on July 17... on National (international) Army Corps of Engineers Day, when the entire US Army Corps of Engineers slips Liberty Island onto pontoons and tows it accross NY Harbor to the mouth of the Narrows (at a cost of about 12,000,000,000,137.35) and invites folks to fire off Fireworks, (no cost) which they do, and are arrested by the NYPD as Fireworks are illegal in New York. Why do they do this every year? To show the world that they can (or can can as the song associated with the holiday states). This holiday commemorates an event in the Revolution where the newly formed Army Corps of Engineers built a bridge across the widest part of the Chesapeke Bay for an assault on New Jersey, only to find that Washington had already crossed the delaware on a bunch of small boats and was now President, and had been for three years.

Glad you enjoyed it Larry, yeah I thought that was so cool. If you do a bunch of fast clicks you can get the feel of the northern lights over NYC. Something not seen too often I guess.

If the Army Corp of Engineers is going through all that trouble and expense they should try and take it on the road for awhile to get some of that money back. I bet they could get a bribe (I mean contract) from Disney to show it at Epcot for a month.

HAPY July 18th, Missing In Action Day! MIA day, celibrates the death of Captain John Paul Jones. On the day he died, it was safe to love him again, and so, after getting the hero's welcome reserved for Viet Nam War Vet's after the Revolution (poverty and no job from the grateful government...) he died in France - the equivalent of dieing on the streets in New York today. Well that is it in a nut shell, go out and feed a MIA vet. You will find the Missing in Action of the Viet Nam war on wet corners and dark allyways where America hides its shame.

This is the day which cellibrates the victory in 1631, when Sweden's King Gustavus II repulsed an imperialist force at Werben, Russia. Of course, at the time Gustavus was also president of the united states (spelled with small u and small s - as it was before the Revolution ).

JULY 28TH!!!!!!!!!! Yup it's National Dentist Ethics Day, the day when in 1864, the US Code of Ethics for Dentists was codified... There are no formal celibrations, traditional to this day, but taking your dentist out to get piss drunk before work is not a bad idea.

This day celibrates the day he was born - named at the time, Ly Phat Ma - in the year 1000 - he died in 1054 of disapointment when he heard that William the Bastard was going to make 1066 the most famouse year in that century). He was the second king of the Vietnamese Ly Dynasty. He made great efforts during his reign to strengthen national unity and defence. He is celibrated in the United States as the father and founder of the Republican Party, and the first director of the CIA. Being that the day celibrates the founding of the CIA, we go about business as usual, and pretend it is a day just like any other, and it is a federal crime to mention what day it is, though a quiet celibratory tradition is to inform on one's neighbors.

HAPPY BOMBAY DAY! Yes, today is the day when in 1498, Christopher Columbus (or Jagjit the wanderer, as he is called with some ironic laughter in New Deli) landed on the North American contenant, or Turtle Island, as the origional Americans call it, or India, as Christopher "Jagjit the wanderer" Columbus called it.
Upon landing, Christopher met a native fellow, and asked him, 1. could be be shown the Taj Mahal, 2. did he have any star maps of Holiwood, 3. and three, where could he get a good lamb curry to go... The fellow told him that the Taj Mahal had not yet been built, Holywood was not nearly all he had been told it was, and that he should try the Jackson Diner in Queens, but they didn't do take-out.
So, Christopher set out for Queens, but not being a great navigator, it took until November to get there, so they had a great curried turkey and that's why Thanksgiving.
So, happy Bombay Day to the US and the WORLD!
