Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Richard Bridge Date: 17 Jul 10 - 03:48 AM Really boring looking 20 year old 7 series Volvo - er - with a B234F+T engine (translation, a custom built hybrid of the twin-cam and turbocharged engines). On youtube you can find some examples of Swedes who have got them out to very silly powers and speeds, one of over 530 BHP, an engine running on a stand with the exhaust pipes glowing allegedly turning out about 1,000bhp (!) and two kids in their homebrew with the speedo needle pointing vertically downwards which would translate to about 170mph, apparently on public roads!! ALthough I'd also like a series 7 or series 9 Jag, or a 3.8 Mark II, or a D-type replica. I have ridden in a Bentley Mulsanne turbo (not the full 400 bhp jobbie linked to above) and was underwhelmed. Not as much sheer grunt as I would have expected and the redline was a mere 4,500 revs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Will Fly Date: 17 Jul 10 - 04:28 AM Well I've hit my mid-60s, and my car - the most comfortable car I've ever owned - in immaculate condition, large, powerful, 23 years old, head-turning, sexy (hah!), silver, leather seats, thirsty, turbocharged - is my 1987 Volvo 240 GLT Estate... Women don't throw their clothes at me when I drive past - they add an extra layer. It's an old warhorse but it's only done 90,000 miles in 23 years and the 2.3 litre engine can pull 5 musicians and a ton of gear. Oh, and on a good day, I can get over 20mpg. |

Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: jacqui.c Date: 17 Jul 10 - 04:46 PM I had my middle age crisis car - a bright yellow Fiat Punto GT that could do up to 120 mph. Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: RangerSteve Date: 17 Jul 10 - 04:51 PM Mine was a Jeep Wrangler. They looked so cool, and Wrangler owners wave to each other on the road, so it seems like you're joining a club that doesn't have any specific rules as to membership, except for the car. It lasted me 10 years and 200,000 miles, but in the end, with repairs, I think I paid twice what it originally cost, and in the end, had so many things wrong with it that my mechanic couldn't fix that I had to replace it. I don't recommend Wranglers, regardless of how much fun they are to drive. |

Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: GUEST,josep Date: 17 Jul 10 - 05:57 PM I bought a Toyota Paseo in 92 and drove it until last year when I got a Prius. 17 years and almost 300,000 miles. For me, a midlife crisis is paying $4 a gallon for gas again. Now, I'm better prepared. So drive your gas guzzlers and impress the ladies. You won't have the money to take them anywhere but you sure got a nice car. To me, a gas economic car is the way to go. Those who think having some monster that goes from 0-60 in 3 seconds is macho and liberating are stupid fools. Wake up. The only gas-saver I won't buy is a smart car. I want something that won't send me through the windshield if I collide with some kid on his tricycle. |

So, I bought a red, two-door 1999 Honda Civic. I think it reminded me of a very attractive woman who drove a similar car....but I didn't get to first base with her. Three years later, I fell in love with a woman with a child, dogs, cats, and a Volvo station wagon; got married; and settled down. As with most of my cars, the hot little Honda ended up in the hands of a teenager - my stepson. But this is the first car I've given to a teenager, that hasn't been trashed in six months. -Joe Offer, who never was comfortable having a middle-age crisis- ....but sometimes I wonder what happened to the very attractive woman with the red Civic...I never even got up the courage to ask her out..... |

It seems as if they're only available in Japan or NZ unless you import them yourself. I really enjoyed driving it to work and around town but since I had the health change and 2 ops a couple of months ago, I can't change gears with that arm!!! Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Donuel Date: 21 Jul 10 - 06:40 PM Sure I wanted the Nissan ZX but with 2 kids and driving less than 3K a year, I got an ol Caddy. With the remaining chrome letters from the park Ave and the deville, the back of the car now reads "keep parked" The carbon footprint of the used car will be less than buying a new Prius since the energy of manufacture will not be exceeded by the caddy's fuel usage for the next 8-10 years. |

Every trip, something has to be worked on (1955 model). There is a Registry and get-togethers; if one is a member, there are pictures of their car and others at a do in Colorado. (He is 50, so a qualified midlife crisis) |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Bobert Date: 30 Jul 10 - 06:41 PM The "Pete" is absolutely outrageous!!! NOT a midlife crisis car but... What the hell... Purdy awesome... And 2 stroke, just like yer weedeater or chainsaw... The 356, is only half a mid-lifer 'cause it ***is*** a Porsche... Carrara??? Different story... Has mid life crisis written all over it but the old bathtub 356's were okay in their day... Not exactly daily drivers these days... Most rusted out and are now gone forever... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 30 Jul 10 - 08:50 PM Porsche 356 had room for two (closely). A rear drive 2-seater, it was Ferry Porsche's first production sports car and the ancestor of the 911. Of 77000 produced between 1948-1965, almost 50% still survive. The Registry has 7700 members. There are 47 member clubs world-wide. Another club, the 356 Club of California, holds an annual Concour d'Elegance and publishes a magazine devoted to the car. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Bobert Date: 30 Jul 10 - 08:59 PM Yeah, I know the car, Q... I owned a '63 Porsche 365B... Rebuilt just about everything on it, including the engine... Drove it for years and auto-crossed it, too... If ya' tie the rear swing axle down so ya' don't get no wheel tuck back there it would handle real good... Stock suspension??? Not so good... |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Uncle_DaveO Date: 30 Jul 10 - 09:26 PM I've had the hots for Porsches since the mid 60s. Just waiting for the right time. Now that I'm 79, I can feel it coming. When I get to middle age I want a Porsche Carrera! Dave Oesterreich |

Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Phot Date: 31 Jul 10 - 06:33 AM Well if you're talking Porche, it has to be a 73 Carrera RS, but not in the bloody awful green! 73 RS |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Bobert Date: 31 Jul 10 - 07:15 PM Now that's what I'm talkin' about, Phot... That's a mid-lifer 'cause it has style... Plus... ...that pancake-6 will fly... Hillmans??? Not so... Chargers??? 'Bout half a mid lifer in that, yeah, the car has balls but the car also screams "Bubba" so if yer plannin' on getting the entire mid-life crisis package, stick with the '73 Carrera and have both... B~ |

But I might need a bit more for one of these too! MG Metro 6R4 Looks like I may need an extention on my dream garage! Wassail!! Chris |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Bobert Date: 01 Aug 10 - 07:29 AM Don't know what I;m gonna do with you, Phot, but you are going the wrong way with the mid life crisis... Ya see, son, the car has to be fun, fast, stylish and... ...have babe, as in woman, appeal... Right here on page 2 of the Mid-Life Crisis Handbook... BTW, Bentleys are kinda an old man's car... Same with their cousin, R-Royce... But seein' as I'm closer to the old Man stage of my life and over any temptation to have a mid-life thing I'd like an old Silver Cloud I or II as long as it doesn't have dual headlights... Hated them... Singles fir me, thank you, on a Cloud... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Phot Date: 01 Aug 10 - 10:53 AM There comes a point wnen a car is so damm pig ugly, its beautiful! The 6R4 is a case in point, 410 BHP (In works trim) from a normally asperated 3.0 V6, 0-60 3 seconds, top speed 120-150 dependant on gearing and tyres, full time 4WD, and as for the sound...........! It sounds like a timber wolf, with its tail caught in a gin trap. Fast, fun, stylish, and babe appeal..........Look no further! Lola T70b Mk3 The Lola factory is 2 miles from where I work, if you ask nicely and have more than a few spare quid, they still make them to order, and yes you could make it road leagal! Page 1 of the Mid Life Crisis Handbook states "You are as young as the woman you feel"...........Hurrah! I'm still 28! Wassail!! Chris |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Gurney Date: 02 Aug 10 - 03:26 AM Phot, that Lola looks as if an Elephant sat on it. I wouldn't mind re-owning my first car, a 1938 AC tourer. And yes it WAS older than I was. But gorgeous. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Richard Bridge Date: 03 Aug 10 - 12:27 AM If there were more than a handful left, and if you could still get windscreens for them, the Piper GT had a very high "Ooh" factor. Nonetheless, progress towards my B234F+T continues. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Bobert Date: 03 Aug 10 - 08:07 AM The Lola ain't no "babe car"... It's too low to the ground and babes don't like havin' to get on their hands and knees to get in and outta a car... Meeses with their dresses... B~ |

Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: EBarnacle Date: 11 Aug 10 - 06:31 PM One of the first cars I really grew to appreciate was the SAAB Monte Carlo [1965] I bought and modified to a competitive rallye car [dyno'ed at 150 hp]. Used to blow 'vettes and 911's away--much to their surprise. I did that while working at a SAAB/Citroen dealership in NJ. During that time, I began to appreciate the Citroen D types [DS--Greek for goddess, ID--French for idea]. I would love to own one again but would happily settle for a new Cit, even with the changes required for Federalization. The D's were true Grand Touring cars and worthy to stack up against any Mercedes of the era. Lady Hillary owns a 91 Toyota MR2 which is a real head turner and also an 81 Celica GT which we have recently put classic plates on and intend to rent to the movies. Anyone out there know where we can get a sunroof seal for the Celica? |

Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 12 Aug 10 - 01:36 PM I don't want a special car, I want a genie. I want to be able to say put new strings on the guitar take the cat to the vet unclog the gutter at the NW corner you play the accompaniment and I'll do the melody now let's switch. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Little Hawk Date: 12 Aug 10 - 01:44 PM Big toys for big boys. 250 SL ;-) That was my father's way of dealing with stress, but it's not mine. I buy guitars instead. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Richard Bridge Date: 12 Aug 10 - 02:21 PM 150bhp out of the Saab 3 cylinder 2-stroke? Or out of the Ford V4? The first would be miraculous, and the second more I think than Ford ever got out of a V4 while keeping the cylinder heads attached. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: EBarnacle Date: 12 Aug 10 - 08:20 PM It was a 1500 that had been ported, given a 3/4 race cam, special crankshaft, heavy duty bearings, oversize valves, heavy duty valve springs, lightweight retainers, racing pistons with special bolts, double barrel carb, custom exhaust and balanced to a faretheewell. Oh yeah, we also put the high pressure lube system, steel balance shaft gear and a few other details I have forgotten. And yes, it surprised the hell out of us, too. Sometimes, you just get it right. Annoyed the heck out of the State inspectors when the non standard exhaust system had no leaks and no problems other than being loud. The reason for the upgrade was the fact that I got tired of replacing bad crankshafts and replacing spark plugs when I was changing driving style. The last straw was burning out two of three pistons in Rhode Island on the way to visit friends in Maine. I ended up renting a car to tow the car back to NJ after finishing my vacation. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: EBarnacle Date: 12 Aug 10 - 08:27 PM Oh, yeah, we also had the SAAB factory competition manual as our guide. We read and followed the manual and ordered parts straight from the racing/rallye car catalog. Stuff like the 3/4 race cam came from Jamestown, NY. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Bobert Date: 12 Aug 10 - 08:38 PM Yeah, a nice SL is just the car for a mid lifer... These drag cars are fir old men who want to relive their youth but not mid lifers... Not that the SL won't rock, mind you, but it also has class... I mean, it is a true babe car... Big valves and tuned exhausts don't turn the babes on, at all... (But, Boberdz... Some o' these folks think that a mid life crisis car is one that will turn 12 second quarter miles...) Well, okee dokee... If that's what ya'll think is a mid life criss then I'm sure yer wives will be very happy to not find that bra behind the seat in the SL... Yo, Barnacle... Don't worry much aboput Richard... He's into drag Volvos??? Yeah, I know... Like, ahhhhh, why??? Jus funnin', Richie... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Little Hawk Date: 13 Aug 10 - 01:05 PM Right on, Bobert. The SL just oozes class, doesn't it? |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Donuel Date: 13 Aug 10 - 01:17 PM A well heeled Wall Street bankster just bought an antique Buggatti for $40,000,000.00 kast month. As disgusting as forty million dollars of our stolen money being used to buy a single car may be, its one hellofva mid life crisis car. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Little Hawk Date: 13 Aug 10 - 01:21 PM THAT is the very car my father desperately wanted all his life! A vintage Buggati. He wanted one of those more than anything else on Earth, but could never afford the price for one. He compensated for it with a series of Mercedes and Jaguars instead... ;-) |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Bobert Date: 13 Aug 10 - 05:09 PM Want to ride of Bugatti??? Get an old Morgan... About the same ride... Drive it about 15 minutes and then yer askin' yerself why you bought it... Nah, me and LH will stick with the SLs fir now unless someone dangles somethin' else in front of us that makes the SL look crappy... But that gonna be hard no matter how many horsepower it makes... BTW, I has me an SL fir a while and it weren't no slugbo... I mean, 100+ mph was nuthin'... And that's a 100+ with style, ya'll... B~ |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Donuel Date: 13 Aug 10 - 07:10 PM Kendall, LH you guys are all anti sustainable bourgoise motor head consumerists lusting after old classic cars. Of course in the pursuit of satisfying my car tooth I have collected many Ferraris, 1 Morgan several Lotus and over one humdred other models,,,all in 1/18th scale. I have a Cord and Dusenburg but als no Buggattis. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: EBarnacle Date: 13 Aug 10 - 11:26 PM Sonuwl, that should be Loti [proper plural of Lotus, as you probably know] even in miniature. |
Subject: RE: BS: Middle age crisis cars From: Little Hawk Date: 14 Aug 10 - 12:56 PM 1/18th scale Bugattis aren't that hard to come by, Donuel. There are a couple of them in my father's old collection of diecast cars. What he couldn't afford to buy in full scale, he purchased in miniature. |
