but I am wandering if altan is using DADGAD tuning ? I am not sure ..

and also I think they start the song in A ...and I turned the chords , but still something is missing ..

Hello, skarpi. I'm interested in the song, and I'm making a MIDI of the version on YouTube. (Search for Altan the wind and the rain.)

It's in the key of D. It's pretty low - the singer is an alto. The first three syllables ("there were two") seem to be pick-up notes.

I have to leave the mudcat and to take a friend to the doctor. I'll be back later today, so I hope you check later on to see what I've figured out.

I think this would make a nice flute tune as well as a ballad.

a * means that the note is dissonant.

Thoughts on this song: The singer on YouTube is going too fast. Even after listening many times, I can't figure out the words that come after 'sisters.' I think it sounds too cheerful and businesslike to be about a drowning.

I'm pretty sure that when this song was sung in the old days, the listeners joined in to sing 'Oh the wind and rain' and also 'O the dreadful wind and rain.' And after a while, a few people would make up a little harmony on those words. That's how we do it here in Kansas City. It helps pass the long, damp nights as we huddle around the fireplaces in our drafty old castles.

It was hard to figure out the note lengths from that recording. I'm not sure I have them right even after trying for a long time.

I got too version one in D and the other is in A ...and the third in E ...now E version is not good ...something is missing there ...

Aversion ....is better I like it ....but still some thing is bothering me still ......I ´ll find out soon ...I this what you gave out here

It's not what the questioner was asking for, but maybe it should be mentioned that 'County Clare' has apparently been tacked on to an American version of the 'Two Sisters' ballad, to give it an Irish location. In fact the ballad, though very popular in Britain and North America, was found very rarely in Ireland. Even in America, 'Wind and Rain' accounts for only a tiny number of the many versions of 'Two Sisters', most of which have a 'Bow Down' chorus.

The version of this song which is on YouTube and is performed by Altan is in the key of D, but the first and last chords are A's. That puts it in the Mixolydian mode. That's quaint, but it doesn't change anything about performing it.

Another thing about it is that it's pretty low. Its lowest note is the A below middle C. If a soprano or tenor wanted to sing it, it would be a good idea to transpose it to a new key. The chord transposing wheel, which you find on the net somewhere, would come in handy here.

When I sing music, I like to think about the 'pipe and drum' idea. This is the idea that we can add variety by making some phrases flute-like and others percussive. This song seems to beg us to make the first 'o the wind and rain' flute-like and flowing. The phrase 'o the dreadful wind and rain' is a great one to make percussive. Especially the thick, thudding word 'dreadful.'

It's another way to pass a long, clammy night.

My band Second Wind recorded this last year. We use a E-A-D-A-E progression that rolls nicely while we sing the whole thing in harmony, capoed one fret for the kwy of F. I'm a contralto, while the other lady is an alto, and accompanied by a single guitar. It works. This is a grand song done in harmony or as a solo with drama and drive.

Altan's seems to use some lines from old Scots copies in Child's collection, such as the making of the fiddle from her breast bone, and one or two lines they may have composed themselves. The whole business of the magical fiddle fashioned from body parts is interesting, as this part of the story had disappeared from most of the versions collected in the 20th century, which usually end with the miller pushing the woman back into his pond, and getting hung for murder. 'The Wind and Rain' is unusual in that it does include the fiddle.

No relevance to the chords actually used by anyone, but seeing the title, I started singing the song and, well, I had a guitar standing next to me, so this is what came out:

Well, works for me. But probably only worth mentioning for the three no-chords I felt the melody asked for. Now that I'm typing it: These are the mentions of "wind". Apparently, they are different, somehow.

Things like that always make me wonder whether the tune mentioned in the song really existed, in this case whether there really was/is a tune called "The Dreadful Wind and Rain".

As for the tune mentioned in the song, I doubt it it ever existed. But wouldn't it be wonderful it someone found it?
