In honour of Victory Da tommorow, here is the iconic Soviet song of WW2.
There were rumours, mostly in the 1990s, that the song was stolen from one written in 1916, but that theory has been proven as false.
When the USSR was invaded by Germany, the poet and lyricisit Lebedev-Kumach wrote a poem called the Holy War which was published in Izvestya and Krasnaya Zvezda.
Almost as soon as they were off the presses, Aleksandrov (the musical director of the Red Army Choir BTW) set them to music and on June 26, 1941, the choir performed it in honour of the troops embarking for the front. For the first few months of the war itt wasn't terribly popular officialy, because it didn't speak of swift and easy victories, but that changed in October when things truly did look bleak.
Disn't mince words, these soviet songwrites.
The only shame is that this song is often played at skinhead and white supremacist gatherings against Chechens and others.
