...the miserable-old-fucker-killjoy-sad-old-hippy-funny-hat-bad-hair-brigade. That sounds rather like an unkind description of a real backwoodsman.

The pleasure some people all over the world evidently get from the Olympics would have been in no way diminished if this had been happening in Paris.

As it is the Olympic fortnight might be a great time to spend a few days in Paris. Every cloud has a silver lining...

Richard Cranium - the Olympics do, however, give pleasure to a very great many people all over the world. Which is a great deal more than can be said for the miserable-old-fucker-killjoy-sad-old-hippy-funny-hat-bad-hair-brigade.

Recognise anyone there?

Interesting that Th*tcher's comments in 1980 can come back to bite the Prime Minister on his arse. By that reckoning, Russia would of course boycott it.

Mind you, The Olympics are supposed to be, as well as a spectacle for the millions that enjoy them, a leveller, where political divides don't count. Sadly of course, politics are the main event, as we well know. One reason for British people to enjoy London 2012 is that the French so really badly wanted to host it.

For me, I will ignore the breaking down of barriers nonsense, keep it in the back of my mind that Saudi Arabia are allowed to compete without fielding a single female athlete, recall all the urban regeneration twaddle spouted years ago when Sheffield hosted the World Student Games, (still costs ratepayers millions each and every year,) and smile at the naivety of the union leader who tossed an opinion that buggering up The olympics would be great bargaining tool.

Yeah, I will enjoy watching those games I have an interest in. (Women's beach volleyball...) and laugh at those that shouldn't be there, such as dressage and synchronised drowning, (ok, most choreography based "sports.") In 1900, architecture was an event, so count our blessings that at least you have to be young, fit and wear Nike trainers to be a recognised sport these days...

On one level, that of public health and health promotion, anything to get kids interested in sport and competing. On another level, the same amount of money actually invested in providing more school based sporting and community sports facilities around the country would have even more benefit.

But at the cost of not being glued to the screen during the men's 100m final. And that would be a little sad.

Well, athletics is now the most drug-tested sport on the planet.
If you follow almost any other sport I shudder to think of the drug use going on - but not detected.
Take for example, the boxer Manny Pacquio who has refused to take an Olympic type drugs test. Very Dodgy!
And football players, I bet they've been doped up for decades!
Even participants in "sedate" sports like bowls and snooker can/do/have benefit from drugs.
We know, for example, darts players have been done for taking drugs.
Sport is great. If every kid in the country would take up a sport, the benefits to society would be enomous.
And, the "Olympic Effect" will certainly result in a huge take up of sports by children who otherwise wouldn't have been drawn into sports.

And I hate miserable, killjoy, sad-old-hippie types in silly clothes and hats, who never learned to sing in tune or play the guitar half-decently, nor learned the value of a decent haircut, but I wouldn't dream for one instant of denying them their "pleasures", such as they are.

Frankly, I hate the Olympics, I hate the waste of money, I hate the way it steals its local from the locals and I hate the brain-dead steroid-eaters who participate.

Me too! I don't think Britain deserves the great athletes that we have.
Take this last weekend.
It was the World Indoor Athletics Championships and the UK did very well BUT the media hardly seem to notice.
An athlete like Jessica Ennis does the sort of training that most professional footballers would balk at the very thought of doing such hard work.
Bring on July!!!

I'm really looking forward to the Olympics - especially as it's my first year of retirement, it will be on telly at sensible times of the day and I'll be able to watch it from start to finish. Excellent!

"We were so poor, a cash-strapped country,
Victims of New Labour's greed.
Our econ'my's up a gum-tree.
"Olympic Games"? That's all we need!"

It's the same the whole world over,
Bankers look for sheep to fleece
Once these bloody games are over
We'll be more in debt than Greece!

What a brilliant phrase Dave:

"I won't actually be boycotting the Olympics"

Me neither:

I have to watch some paint dry.
And I have to tydy my sock draw.

Surely, if the precedent is to be followed, it should be the *Russian* athletes who boycott it this time?

No, Nigel neither do most, us but the inspired deep political logic of the post means ot clealry must be true.

I think this kind of reflection on history could lead to a whole host of government, and for that matter opposition, changes in policy

Encore, encore

I've just heard that Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron has asked UK competitors to boycott this year's Olympic Games.
This is in protest at UK's presence in Afghanistan.
Cameron is quoted as saying, "Our illustrious predecessor, Margaret Thatcher, advised British athletes not to attend the 1980 Olympics in Moscow because of the Russian presence in Afghanistsan and we, the UK Government, feel that we must follow that moral precedent".

That's a bit of a shocker!
What do we think?
