Va. man charged with shooting guard at conservative group’s DC headquarters

WASHINGTON â€" A man accused of shooting a security guard at the Washington headquarters of a conservative lobbying group pleaded not guilty Friday to assault and handgun charges.

Floyd Lee Corkins II, 28, of Herndon, Va., faces the possibility of decades in prison if convicted in last week’s attack inside the lobby of the Family Research Council. According to court documents, Corkins told the guard he didn’t like the group’s politics before opening fire with a semiautomatic handgun. Corkins was carrying dozens of rounds of ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches, according to the documents.

Corkins pleaded not guilty at an arraignment Friday afternoon. He also waived the right to a detention hearing, which meant that prosecutors did not have to present evidence to support his continued detention. He will be held without bond until his court appearance, which has not been scheduled but will likely occur before Oct 1.

Magistrate Judge Alan Kay also ruled during the hearing that Corkins was competent to understand the court proceedings and assist in his defense. Corkins underwent a psychiatric evaluation this week.

Corkins’ public defender declined to comment after the brief hearing. Corkins wore an orange jumpsuit and spoke only in response to questions from the judge. He did not appear to have any friends or relatives in the courtroom.

The FRC strongly defended Chick-fil-A after the fast-food chain’s president voiced his opposition to same-sex marriage. Corkins’ parents told investigators that he strongly supported gay rights, according to the documents. He had volunteered at a community center for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, although he was not well-known in Washington’s gay community.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has labeled the FRC as a hate group, saying that it has spread false propaganda against gays. Corkins was also carrying the contact information for another conservative group, the Traditional Values Coalition, according to that group’s president, who said she got that information from federal investigators.

The wounded man, Leo Johnson, has been released from the hospital, the FRC said in a statement Friday. Johnson is the building manager for the FRC’s headquarters. While he was performing security duties at the time of the shooting, he was not armed and not in uniform. He helped subdue the gunman after being shot in the arm, and the city police chief praised him for stopping an attack that could have turned deadly.

If you search far and wide enough, I'm sure you can find at least one other example that makes him "another". But if you can't add up the incidents from recent days, months, and years, and see which wing has been turning out the nuts with guns wholesale, and which wing's rhetoric has been toned to inflame them, you've been hiding a long way down under the rock.

The political persuasion of people who use guns to solve their "problems" isn't really cogent. It's the fact that whacked out idiots have guns in the first place. The only way the politics enter into it is, as has been noted, the fact that the right wing is the one that ensures that any loon can easily and legally get a gun.

I do not understand why Bobert's words are so offensive to him. He should be honored to have someone repeat his words instead of angry.

Is there some sort of restriction on reminding people of what they said? Once you say something in public, it is public. Words have consequeces.

As far as the hatred thing goes, Bobert says hate more than anybody I have ever known. He makes hateful bigoted racist statements, projects them on other people and then accuses them of being racist, hateful and bigoted. Then he claims that the made up statement are proof that someone or a group of people are racist, hateful and bigoted but he can't say who said them or when. He manufactures his own evidence.

Bobert uses any words he wants to describe anyone he wants with nothing to back it up but his own opinions. But for some reason, no one can do the same to him. I'd say another difference is that a not insubstantial number of right-wingers are supportive of their nut-cases while today's lefties almost universally condemn theirs. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone on the left who thinks the actions of the guy referenced in the opening post of this thread were justified, but you don't have to dig very hard to find right-wingers who think the guy who shot Gabrielle Giffords should receive a medal.

According to an FBI affidavit, the investigation moved swiftly. On March 26, the FBI's San Francisco office got a copy of a YouTube video in which Leboon allegedly made threats to kill Cantor and his "cupcake evil wife."

Leboon's video also makes reference to Cantor's Judaism â€" Cantor last week said he has received anti-Semitic threats in the past.

"Remember Eric at our judgment time, the final Yom Kippur has been given," according to a transcript of the video in the affidavit. "…You're an abomination, you receive my bullets in your office, remember they will be placed in your heads. You and your children are Lucifer's abomination."

Police had a warrant to arrest Leboon on separate charges of terroristic threats with intent to terrorize another, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.

Windels was charged March 31 with two felony bomb scare counts and two misdemeanor counts of sending a computer message threatening injury or harm.

So in this land of God's abundance we propose laws, viz.:

What this would mean is that the annual tax would bring the biggest fortune down to $3 or $4 million to the person because no one could pay taxes very long in the higher brackets. But $3 to $4 million is enough for any one person and his children and his children's children. We cannot allow one to have more than that because it would not leave enough for the balance to have something.

2. We propose to limit the amount any one man can earn in one year or inherit to $1 million to the person.

3. Now, by limiting the size of the fortunes and incomes of the big men, we will throw into the government Treasury the money and property from which we will care for the millions of people who have nothing; and with this money we will provide a home and the comforts of home, with such common conveniences as radio and automobile, for every family in America, free of debt.

4. We guarantee food and clothing and employment for everyone who should work by shortening the hours of labor to thirty hours per week, maybe less, and to eleven months per year, maybe less. We would have the hours shortened just so much as would give work to everybody to produce enough for everybody; and if we were to get them down to where they were too short, then we would lengthen them again. As long as all the people working can produce enough of automobiles, radios, homes, schools, and theaters for everyone to have that kind of comfort and convenience, then let us all have work to do and have that much of heaven on earth.

5. We would provide education at the expense of the states and the United States for every child, not only through grammar school and high school but through to a college and vocational education. We would simply extend the Louisiana plan to apply to colleges and all people. Yes; we would have to build thousands of more colleges and employ 100,000 more teachers; but we have materials, men, and women who are ready and available for the work. Why have the right to a college education depend upon whether the father or mother is so well-to-do as to send a boy or girl to college? We would give every child the right to education and a living at birth.

6. We would give a pension to all persons above sixty years of age in an amount sufficient to support them in comfortable circumstances, excepting those who earn S 1,000 per year or who are worth $10,000.

7. Until we could straighten things out and we can straighten things out in two months under our program-we would grant a moratorium on all debts which people owe that they cannot pay.

And now you have our program, none too big, none too little, but every man a king.

We owe debts in America today, public and private, amounting to $252 billion. That means that every child is born with a $2,000 debt tied around his neck to hold him down before he gets started. Then, on top of that, the wealth is locked in a vise owned by a few people. We propose that children shall be born in a land of opportunity, guaranteed a home, food, clothes, and the other things that make for living, including the right to education.

Our plan would injure no one. It would not stop us from having millionaires-it would increase them tenfold, because so many more people could make $1 million if they had the chance our plan gives them. Our plan would not break up big concerns.

The only difference would be that maybe 10,000 people would own a concern instead of 10 people owning it.

But, my friends, unless we do share our wealth, unless we limit the size of the big man so as to give something to the little man, we can never have a happy or free people. God said so! He ordered it.

We have everything our people need. Too much of food, clothes, and houses why not let all have their fill and lie down in the ease and comfort God has given us? Why not? Because a few own everything-the masses own nothing.

I wonder if any of you people who are listening to me were ever at a barbecue! We used to go there-sometimes 1,000 people or more. If there were 1,000 people, we would put enough meat and bread and everything else on the table for 1,000 people. Then everybody would be called and everyone would eat all they wanted. But suppose at one of these barbecues for 1,000 people that one man took 90 percent of the food and ran off with it and ate until he got sick and let the balance rot. Then 999 people would have only enough for 100 to eat and there would be many to starve because of the greed of just one person for something he couldn't eat himself.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, America, all the people of America, have been invited to a barbecue. God invited us all to come and eat and drink all we wanted. He smiled on our land and we grew crops of plenty to eat and wear. He showed us in the earth the iron and other things to make everything we wanted. He unfolded to us the secrets of science so that our work might be easy. God called: "Come to my feast."

Then what happened? Rockefeller, Morgan, and their crowd stepped up and took enough for 120 million people and left only enough for 5 million for all the other 125 million to eat. Justice Department investigating death threats against Republican senators, representatives

Madison --Seventeen Republican Senators in addition to Republican Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald received the email threat that stated they should put their "things in order because you will be killed and your families also will be killed."

The email, which in the subject said "Atten: Death threat!!!! Bomb!!!!," was sent at 9:18 p.m. Wednesday, after the Senate, with Democrats absent, voted to eliminate most collective bargaining provisions for most public workers.

In addition, all of the Assembly Republicans, including Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald, received an email death threat about 10:30 Wednesday night, said John Jagler, a spokesman for Jeff Fitzgerald. That email stated "Vote no and save your life."

Jagler said the threat talked about shooting the representative and planting bombs in places he frequented.

The state's Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the email threat against the senators and several other threats from a variety of sources, said Bill Cosh, a spokesman for the Department of Justice.

Cosh said Thursday he was not at liberty to say anything more about the threats and investigation.

Andrew Welhouse, a spokesman for Scott Fitzgerald, said the email threat was turned over to Capitol Police, who also are investigating.

The senators who received the email death threat are Fitzgerald of Juneau, Robert Cowles of Green Bay, Alberta Darling of River Hills, Michael Ellis of Neenah, Pam Galloway of Wausau, Glenn Grothman of West Bend, Sheila Harsdorf of River Falls, Randy Hopper of Fond du Lac, Neal Kedzie of Elkhorn, Frank Lasee of De Pere, Dan Kapanke of La Crosse, Mary Lazich of New Berlin, Joe Liebham of Sheboygan, Terry Moulton of Chippewa Falls, Luther Olsen of Ripon, Leah Vukmir of Wauwatosa, Van Wanggaard of Racine and Rich Zipperer of the City of Pewaukee.

Kapanke also received a separate "disturbing" email that threatened his life on Wednesday night after the vote, a staff member said.

The aide said Capitol Police and La Crosse police were immediately notified.

Tim Donovan, a spokesman for the Department of Administration and Capitol Police, had no immediate comment Thursday morning.

Welhouse on Thursday provided to the Journal Sentinel a copy of the text of the e-mail, but would not provide the email address or name of the sender.

"We have received several more threats over the past few weeks as well, and protesters have actually gone so far as to go up to (Fitzgerald's) house and bang on the windows at 6 a.m. demanding that he come out," Welhouse said.

Here's an excerpt of the email provided by Welhouse:

"This is how it's going to happen: I as well as many others know where you and your family live, it's a matter of public records. We have all planned to assault (sic) you by arriving at your house and putting a nice little bullet in your head. However, this isn't enough. We also have decided that this may not be enough to send the message. So we have built several bombs that we have placed in various locations around the areas in which we know that you frequent…"

The threat against Kapanke stated:

"We will hunt you down. We will slit your throats. We will drink your blood. I will have your decapitated head on a pike in the Madison town square. This is your last warning."

Kapanke's aide also would not provide the emailer's address or name. The email was referred to Capitol Police, who are investigating, the aide said.
