Subject: Classical Music on lap dulcimer- -CD/Bk?

I am looking for both recordings of classical music on lap dulcimer and sheet music for same. I found one book of dulcimer duets at the Kitchen Musician, which I will probably get, but would also like to find a solo instruction book or tapes, too.

So...do any of you have a favourite classical music on dulcimer cd/tape?

Thanks!

kat

Kat, the O'Carolan book I have for mountain dulcimer seems very helpful for fingering melodies; I wonder if it might be a good start for practicing on tunes you already know, to transfer them to dulcimer? It includes notes and, I think, tab, plus chord names. Let me know if you would like to see a page scanned to see if this would be useful, and I will dig it out of the pile.

Thanks, Susan, but I've got a lot of them on tape or midi and can do them by ear. I am looking for specifically classical, as Night Owl told me she'd heard someone doing calssical one time on lap dulci and it was gorgeous.

I do do Ode to Joy and a couple of others, already and maybe I will just have to get out some of my classical cd's and do them by ear, too.

Hi Kat...

Janita Baker, of Bob and Janita Baker, Blue Lion Instruments, is a wonderful dulcimer player and has several recordings out of ragtime, classical, etc. ( They also make the most beautiful sounding dulcimers I've ever heard...I have a McSpadden, which is a lovely instument, but not a patch on a BlueLion dulcimer.)

Their website is www.bluelioninstruments.com. A Yahoo search came up witih at least 2 places to get Janita's recordings: www.riverlarkmusic.com and www.riversongmusicshoppe.com. They are probably also available through their own website.

Not sure if it's on any of janita's recordings, but whatever the theme music is for Masterpiece Theater is fairly easy to play (it must be, if I can play it!), and is a good place to start. If you've never watched MT, perhaps someone with a better memory than mine knows the name of this much played classical piece.

Hope this helps....

I think the name of the Masterpiece theme is "Rondeau by Moret." Lorraine Lee Hammond has prepared a tab on it and some of the stuff in her "Barley Breaks" tab book may be classical, or at least lean that way. Her site is here.

Yes, Kat, my idea was only that such a book might help with the notes-to-fingering process if that is a place where you are learning now. So you might be better able simply to play from existing scores.

Kat,

Try Elderly Instruments at their web site - - www.elderly.com - - and check what they have. They have a good collection of books and tapes.
