Well, both songs are on his wonderful "First Million Miles" collection on Rounder. Unfortunately, neither song is in the "Rise Up Singing" songbook, and I'm too lazy to transcribe them for you. Maybe there's a more generous soul around, or maybe you should buy this fantastic CD. It really is good - but I wish it had a lyric sheet. Rounder isn't very good about providing lyrics. -Joe-

Howdy,
They are both in "Movin' It Down the Line," a Bill Staines song book put out by Mineral River Music, Box 292, Dover, New Hampsire 03820.

OCTOBER WINDS
(Bill Staines)

Tomatoes on my window sill, they go from green to red.
Some are in the garden still but the frost it's got the bed.
We've apples in the presses now, and cider in the pails.
The grey geese fly beside the clouds and the hunters have the trails.

I tie a red bandana 'round that old sleepy dog of mine
To try and keep her safe and sound from the shotgun pellet's whine.
My supply of fuel, well, it's pretty good for we've worked all summer long
And one last robin in the wood has left us with this song.

Get out, get out that garden rake, it seems it's in the cards
That every wind blown leafy shake comes down in yur back yard.
Pull on that old blue wooly coat that keeps you from the chill,
October winds have come to town and summer's o'er the hill.
October winds have come to town and summer's o'er the hill.

There's hay stacked high up in the loft and feed corn in the bin.
The cattle gather 'round the trough and the crops have all come in.
You whisper to yourself alone, "Lord, how the seasons fly."
When birds have taken wing and flown across the morning sky.

Get out, get out . . .

Allinkausay,
Bill

Howdy,
Here goes with "Yellowstone Winds" from the same source as "October Winds."

YELLOWSTONE WINDS
(Bill Staines)

There's a star that's shining bright
On the Teton range tonight
There's a lonesome cloud flying out across the moon.
There's a country song so sweet
That reaches to the street
Through the hoots and hollers of an old run-down saloon

Yellowstone winds, they're calling me back again,
"Come here to me my friend," they whisper to my soul.
Piney smoke in the frosty air,
Cattle grazing all around you there,
Snow fields on the mountains fair
Lie silent in the cold.

I can feel the morning sun
And see that old Snake River run
And I remember all the legends and the tales.
Old Hoback's in my dreams
As he wanders up his streams
And stops to stand a mark beside the trail.

Yellowstone winds, they're . . .

There's a young coyote that calls
From the steep high country walls
As she ranges in the shadows of the trees.
With her cunning and her care,
Prospecting in the air,
She searches for a scent upon the breeze.

Yellowstone winds, they're . . .
Repeat first verse
Yellowstone winds, they're . . .

Allinkausay,
Bill
