Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: GUEST,SeaKing Date: 26 Aug 03 - 07:34 AM D'Addario EJ16's on my HD28. I've never got on with Martin strings, whatever I've tried dull very quickly, especially 5th and 6th. I retune a lot(between different open tunings) and the EJ16s are the the most resistant to breaking that I've tried for any length of time. CK |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: rodentred Date: 26 Aug 03 - 01:09 PM I tried the Elixir but found them a bit like playing a non stick frying pan. kept sliding past the stop point. Still I guess you get used to them and they sounded OK. I also like to use Dean Markley light gauge but they are so difficult to get hold of. They really give a nice accoustic folk sound (what ever that is!) to my guitars. |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: Spot Date: 26 Feb 04 - 08:15 AM Interesting debate going on here....Not much of a mention of DR's, particularly the 'rare' one's and no mention of Rohrtech titanium and nickel medium tension strings that I think are B***y wonderful...I use em on my Lowden O32 - fabulous!! regards to all.... Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 26 Feb 04 - 12:32 PM A guy I know uses 'Newtone' strings on his Lowden and they sound very good. They're hand-made in Heanor, Derbyshire, UK and are reputed to be the Dog's Wotnots. They make special sets for non-standard tunings also, which give the same tension as you would normally get with standard tuning. |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: Grab Date: 26 Feb 04 - 03:13 PM Johnny, I've started using those since I got the Lowden - the guys on the "Cult of Lowden" group recommended them. They don't seem to last that long, but they're fairly cheap (via StringsDirect.com) and sound good. They're a good match for a Lowden or other fingerpicking guitars, I think. Graham. |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: GUEST,Cliff McGann Date: 26 Feb 04 - 03:39 PM I use Elixir's on my Lowden 025c and my handmade Smaller bodied guitar made by Cape Breton, Nova Scotia luthier Otis Tomas and sweatr by them. I have played other strings that I've liked more than elixirs BUT no string I've played sounds as good as Elixir's after a month of me playing. Changing strings only 12-120x per year is worth it compared to 50-60 before Elixirs. Just my 2cents, CLiff |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: GUEST,Strollin' Johnny Date: 27 Feb 04 - 08:21 AM Grab - your post pretty much bears out what my guy tells me about Newtones, around £6-50 a set and sound great. He seems to think they last a little better than most other non-coated strings though - maybe his sweat's not so acid? Cliff - I've always used Elixir 12s or the D'Addario EXP 12s on my Lowden O25 - they're both dear, the D'Add's sound better when new but don't last anywhere near as long as the Elixirs. I can get 4 to 6 weeks from a set of Elixirs compared with 2 weeks from the D'Add's. My only complaint with the Elixirs is that they seem to have a low tension and the low 'E' goes out badly when I capo up, but a little re-tune is a small price to pay for that long life! I've also tried Dean Marley Alchemy's on both my Lowden and my Martin J40 but they sound very tinny and 'twangy', too much for my liking. Johnny :0) |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: Dave of Mawkin Date: 27 Feb 04 - 10:23 AM D'addario's all the way! 12/13's usually, then if im skint Earthwoods. |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: tradmusic Date: 27 Feb 04 - 10:42 PM The Martin SP's Bronze are grand, and with the bronze plating the salt from yer hands doesn't corrode them...they sound decent and last for as long as you'd care to keep them...maybe even longer. I' use em' on a L'Arrivee which sounds pretty decent with about any kind of strings...the engineer at the last recording studio said it was the best sounding acoustic he'd ever heard. (but then he mostly records rock and jazz, not acoustic folk trash like I play.) |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: Don Firth Date: 27 Feb 04 - 11:35 PM Also D'Addario all the way. I find they're consistently good and relatively inexpensive. I buy them by the furlong from Elderly Instruments. Much less expensive than buying them locally. EJ45 (normal tension) or EJ46 (hard tension) for my Oribé concert classic. Either sound good, but I think the EJ46 have a little more carrying power and sustain. EJ44 (extra hard tension) for both my Arcangel Fernandez flamenco and my GO-GW nylon-string travel guitar. The Arcangel has a very low action like a good flamenco guitar should (butter-soft), but with anything less than EJ44s, I get a bit of buzz. The buzz is okay if I'm only going to be playing flamenco (part of the characteristic flamenco sound), but since I like to use it for song accompaniment as well, I use the higher tension strings to mitigate the buzz. The GO-GW travel guitar is short-scale (23 ½"), so it needs the higher tension strings. EJ16 (light tension) on my steel string GO-GW travel guitar. Also short scale, but lightly built, so even though it's small, it sounds like a real guitar instead of a dulcimer. Probably not much help to people who play D models. . . . Don Firth |

Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: GUEST,Guest from Sanity Date: 11 Jan 14 - 11:09 PM On the acoustics, Guild Phosphor Bronze, light or med light...but they aren't around too much any more...when the music store told me that, a couple of years ago, I bought several sets...still have some new sets. Before that, D'Addario...but the Guilds, once I tried them out, blew D'Addarios away. Back in 1978, I happened upon a box of 2500 plain wound ZB Strings of different gauges...008, .009. .010, .011, .013, .014, .015, .017. they are used mostly for pedal steel guitars....I still have some..they, also are great strings. Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: GUEST,Phil Cooper on Spouse's laptop Date: 12 Jan 14 - 12:12 PM I get phosphor bronze generic martin light gauge strings. We buy 12 sets at a time from a music store where we used to live. We get a deal on the amount and the strings are fine. Phosphor bronze strings provide a "bite" on the frets that I liked and the elixirs don't. Hard to explain. What works for one, doesn't work for another. |
Subject: RE: Guitar players: What strings you usin'? From: GUEST,dtm Date: 12 Jan 14 - 01:35 PM I use elixir now. They did feel different the first time I played with them however they still had the buzz after 18 months and I changed them more out of guilt than necessity |
