Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 May 05 - 07:43 PM My inlaws can! When I first met my Sidmouthian boyfriend over 30 years ago (subsequently to become hubby), the festival to them was "the dancing" back in the EFDSS days. Now, the block in which they live comprises 2 houses permanently occupied and 8 holiday homes!! On the other subject, I got the same email as Don, although I had already given my tenner and ALL my contact details including snail-mail address to the newly-formed "Friends of Sidmouth Folk Week". I am still very positive about all to come, and there are enough positive people about to make it work! TB |

Sadly I think many local residents are already antagonised. All the neighbours I speak to are delighted to hear the Festival proper is not happening this year. They just want Sidmouth to be a quiet rural backwater again. Sad. Very sad. |

Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: GUEST Date: 18 May 05 - 06:35 AM The real point, Scooby, is that it's got to be good if there's going to be another, so we'll do whatever it takes to make it so. None of us are daft enough to think it will be like any Sidmouth festival in the last ten years, but we're damn sure it will be happening in the spirit of the early Sidmouth festivals, which is exactly what is needed to rebuild it to its more recent glory. I have nothing but admiration for those who are working their butts off toward a successful conclusion, and, while I don't agree with telling doubters to go elsewhere, I can appreciate that people who are passionate about anything can sometimes overreact to negative comment. We don't all have the patience of Job. I too saw the McBrides as disappointed folkies, not trolls, and felt that some encouragement might have changed their minds. I do have a serious problem, tho', with the let's show them mean shopkeepers brigade. The perfect way to finish Sidmouth permanently is to antagonise the local residents. Given the certainty that the majority of residents are NOT folkies, they ARE doing us a favour by putting up with the parking difficulties, queues in shops, and other irritations that thousands of festival goers inevitably cause, and we should not allow ourselves to forget that fact. This will be a GREAT festival once the music starts. Believe it! Don T. |

Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: EagleWing Date: 14 May 05 - 07:44 AM Push off McBrides! We don't want you in Sidmouth...have mentioned this on the other thread too. Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: rhyzla Date: 13 May 05 - 07:05 AM See tickets thread for a repeat of Phil and Maggies positive, then negative post. As Lynne says ,individual tickets are avialable at reasonable costs, so just buy the bits you like, and only the season ticket if it presents good value - i.e. you want to see more than 7 or 8 concerts - your choice! |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: MBSLynne Date: 13 May 05 - 05:43 AM I'm not sure that £135 for seven days worth of concerts is exceptionally high. And if you weren't going to make full use of it, you could still buy tickets for individual concerts. Also, there are other concert venues as well as the Ham marquee. and lots of other events too, so why cancel just because you feel you can't afford ONE venue? Lynne |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: GUEST,Phil & Maggie McBride Date: 13 May 05 - 05:25 AM There IS a season ticket available after all according to the Hobgoblin advertisement in the 'fRoots' magazine but it costs £135 per person and only covers the Ham Marquee. That must make it the most expensive festival season ticket anywhere in the U.K. We've posted under 'Sidmouth Tickets' giving our views on this and adding that, reluctantly, we have cancelled our B&B booking for Sidmouth this year as tickets are being priced above our pocket. We congratulate Hobgoblin on sponsoring the Ham Marquee but feel that a £135 season ticket for just one venue does not represent good value for money. It's not the fault of Hobgoblin or whoever is organising the Ham Marquee. We guess it just reflects the fact that the costs of staging concerts in a marquee on the Ham cannot be covered without sponsorship from the local authority. As the local authority has axed its sponsorship of Sidmouth Folk Week the concert costs can only be recouped through very high ticket prices but if these prices deter people like us from attending then the future for Sidmouth is bleak indeed. It's all so very sad but we hope those who still attend the dances and free events at Sidmouth have a great time even if, like us, they cannot afford the cost of a season ticket for the main concert marquee. Phil & Maggie McBride |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: Tattie Bogle Date: 12 May 05 - 07:03 PM As I understand it, all events are individual, so you may need to go to more than one source to get tickets: but never fear, you doubters and moaners, there are many festivals where tickets are only printed a month or so before the actual date, and yet they still play to packed houses/sell out, etc.I tried to get tickets in advance for a festival I went to recently, and was told "most people buy them when they get here" - and yes, full houses because they had quality acts, as has Sidmouth Folkweek 2005. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: Lizzie in beautiful Sidmouth Date: 11 May 05 - 02:34 PM Dear 'Guest Phil', Are you a Sidmouth Worrier, or a Sidmouth Warrior? I think you a Worrier! I do! ;0) Now myself and loads of other people on this thread are all Sidmouth Warriors....in fact we've almost got our very own tribe together! You can join us if you'd like. It's great fun! We battle through insults and slice through doubt, we duel with dragons and wrestle with witches! We've seen off all sorts of miseries and moaners, we've hurled our swords of light at The Princes and Princesses of Darkness......all for one reason and one reason only.....SIDMOUTH! :0) Now it seems to me that all those who truly want to come to Sidmouth will make sure they are here for the First week of August and nothing, but nothing will keep them away! It really is that simple. Absolutely no stress involved at all. All these fine Warriors will soon be heading down to this little town here in Devon, from all parts of the Country because they BELIEVE in Sidmouth and what is has always stood for, what it still stands for. None of us expected it to be here a few months back, but it is! None of us expected 2006 to be considered, but it is! None of us ever thought that people would come back, but they are! None of us thought the town would want the Festival again, but it does! None of us thought the rats would leave so quickly and 'new blood' would come pouring into the shops, but they have! And so, if you think that in the middle of May you should start to cast doubt on Sidmouth being successful....well....you'll have to get through all of us first! For The Sidmouth Warriors have put a protective light around this Folk Week, which nothing and no-one is going to break through! Still, if it will make you happy to go to Broadstairs or Cambridge instead, well...off you go. Mind you, they might be filled with other Worriers and your holiday could be totally ruined through An Agony of Angst and Sidmouth Hand-Wringing....in fact you could end up in need of Serious Anti-Angst Therapy! All those people wandering around looking at The Sidmouth Folk Week leaflets. I can almost hear the sobs from here.... "Oh Woe is us....we've let it go! Oh woe, woe and thrice woe....Sidmouth IS happening!!! If only we'd listened...if only we'd had faith....if only...if only......!" And there we'll all be in Sidmouth, in The Marquee watching loads of top acts, in The Bedford Hotel listening to all the sessions, in Dukes Hotel watching all the acts there and the Manor Pavillion, the Late Night Extras, the Ceilidhs and so many other things.....having a great time. However, if you'd like to leave your name and address, The Sidmouth Warriors will send you a postcard from Sidmouth Folk Week so you can see what you're missing! They do some great cards down in Fords, where the photograph shop is. Would you prefer a picture of the seafront filled with Morris Dancers and Musicians, one of The Bowling Green, (I wonder if the Annual Sidmouth Streaker is going to turn up this year and give us his usual 'Display Amongst The Bowls!)....or a lovely picture of The Sidmouth Fiddler, up in Connaught Gardens? Just let me know and I'll sort it all out for you Phil my dear....and remember, wherever you spend your holipops....relax and try not to worry too much. You may decide to go to all sorts of other Festivals but there'll not be one to touch Sidmouth Folk Week this year! ;0) Lots of Love Lizzie :0) PS: Don't forget...you'll always be welcome to join us...I have a spare sword....a blue light saber to be precise...come and be a Jedi/Siddy Knight Phil, you know you really want to! ;0) May The Folk Week Force Be With You! :0) |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: GUEST,Phil Date: 11 May 05 - 08:56 AM Someone from the Festival sent me an e-mail yesterday saying there should be some news in a couple of weeks. I hope so. Trouble is that many folkies have already booked their holidays, made their plans etc. for this summer. I have to give two months notice of my holiday dates so I am fast running out of time and may just decide to go to Cambridge, Eastleigh and Broadstairs instead this summer. I fear the late announcement is bound to have an impact on the number of paying customers especially with no season tickets being available. That's bound to reduce income and have a 'knock-on' effect on the financial viability of plans for future festivals. I shouldn't think it will make a scrap of difference to all the sessions and dance displays but it could make a very big difference to the star name concerts and it is those star names and their requirements wot cost the money. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: GUEST,The Barden of England - somewhere in Spain Date: 11 May 05 - 08:05 AM I see the ticket question rears its head again. As far as I´m aware there are no season tickets, so I suppose when the final line up is agreed and signed then tickets will be available. When last I heard this will be early in June, still two full months before the festival happens. Not quite the same as Cambridge, but almost. John Barden |

Do you think that Turqoise could be the new Cod? ;0) Anyway Bonecruncher, you'll be so overwhelmed at the taste of Happy's chips that you'll be totally unaware of the colour scheme! Besides those chips should only ever be eaten on the beach.....with all the music and voices drifting all around you and the waves swishing in and out against the pebbles. No....GrumpyGuest, you couldn't be more wrong! The guy left/is leaving for New Zealand because he knows that Sidmouth is going to be full of lovely folk people again this year. He doesn't like Folk Festivals! I think that's why he's leaving! ;0) And now all this talk of NZ has made me remember those two beautiful Maori ladies who sang at The Arena last year, I think it was last year anyway....but I've googled for info about them, but can't find anything. Anyone remember who they were? Lizzie :0) |

Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: Lizzie in beautiful Sidmouth Date: 09 May 05 - 04:03 PM I thought it might be a good time to resurrect this 'positive' thread of Ekhi's. Just to put on here too that Hobgoblin music are sponsoring the acts on in the afternoon down at The Ham Marquee....yay all you Hobgoblins!! Also....our fish and chip shop, (very important piece of info this bit! ;0)...) has all been revamped! We've always had the best fish'n'chips in the world in Sidmouth,(;0)..) down in The White Horse Cafe, almost next to 'Forever England' It used to be run by two brothers, who I think are Algerian. One was always so happy and one always so grumpy that those names eventually stuck within our family. However, Happy and his lovely wife Annie, have now moved back to Paris and Grumpy has taken over. But.....something magical has happened....Grumpy has now turned into Happy!!! He is so pleased to have the shop to himself, apparently he and his brother never got on! So...now he's completely revamped everything....new furniture, no more 197O's tat....in with 'real wood' and everything is a gorgeous shade of turquoise! AND....the chips have got EVEN better. I didn't think that was possible, (not that I eat many of them of course! ;0)...) but they have! AND....EVEN BETTER NEWS!! The man in Trumps who was extremely rude last year to someone 'very high up' in the folk world is not only leaving town.....he's going all the way to New Zealand! Yeeeeyyyyyyy!!!! AND....he's not coming back!!!!! How cool is that? And....'Tickled Pink' are playing at The Late Night Extra! And....it's only 82 days to go! Too much excitment for one evening...I have to go and drink tea now to calm myself down! Lizzie :0) |

Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: MBSLynne Date: 29 Apr 05 - 02:48 AM The main campsite, which in recent years has taken up two fields, will only be the first, main field this year. I think it will probably still be fine as numbers are going to be down quite a long way on the normal. Malcolm Burrow's Part Thorn site is pretty big and I've never yet seen it full. I also forgot...last year he opened up another field in Sidmouth, up a lane opposite Waitrose and last time I spoke to him he was intending to do it this year too....you could check with him, and ask any questions about the other site too...not sure if his umber is on the website, but I have it if anyone wants it. The LNE this year is supposed to be on the Part Thorn field. don't know how that will work out. The us will be running to and from LNE. Love Lynne |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: Sue the Borderer Date: 28 Apr 05 - 07:05 PM I've just got my receipt through from the main, Bulverton, campsite. This year they are allocating plot numbers, which hasn't been done before. It doesn't say whether they are being allocated in order of booking or of arrival. I've been told that the campsite numbers will be restricted (maybe about half of last year) and that the other sites, being smaller need booking pretty soon. |
Subject: RE: Sidmouth - Positive From: GUEST,The Barden of England at work Date: 28 Apr 05 - 10:47 AM Mrs Annie - I've stayed at Kings Down Tail many times and it's a nice quiet site with proper facilities. The very late bus will be running from there past the LNE at Salcombe Regis (at least I think that is where the LNE is)- and there is always room from Monday onwards. Being that much further on I don't think noise will be a problem. Don (WYSYWIG)Thompson should be able to help. |
