Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 02 Oct 06 - 10:03 AM Hi JB - I want to come along and see Mick/Rhiannon - I'm putting out flyers at Barton for you - I'm in Lowestoft that weekend, so/but I am hoping to get back in time - the journey to St Albans isn't that enjoyable at the moment with the M1 being turned into a giant mud pie Cheers Guru - I do a lot of cut/pasting so it's not too much bother - I suppose it would ease up on threads - I wonder what Joe thinks? I went to a new venue for the Bedford folk club last week - Daley's in Kempston - it's a nice big room (no disturbance) - we started off with 5 but finished with 10 souls - Mike Blair could do with support when he moves to Wednesday this week - everybody's moved to Wednesday - doh ALSO Ashwell weekend - 17/18/19th November - replaces Buntingford weekend of folk - see Mudcat thread Also Banbury this month - see Mudcat thread |

You should have said there was something wrong with your ear. The man walked out, waited a few minutes, and then re-entered. The Receptionist smiled smugly and asked, 'Yes?'? Pub time is 12.30. Spit and sawdust type of place with good food. Workmen/farmer types confined to the bar others in the lounge, good food, used to be the home of Bromsgrove Folk Club, then they built a travel lodge type hotel onto the back of the place, but this hasn't affected the pub at all. The folk club has moved a mile up the road to Bromsgrove Rugby Club. Great building and real ale, they've got Robin Laing in two weeks time, singing and suppin' tonight. Blimey sounds like I'm compiling a guide book !! See ya later - freezin' in Bromsgrove. |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 19 Oct 06 - 08:23 AM Sorry Here is a very sad notice from Alan Hewson: I am very sorry to announce the tragic death of Tam Lin/Windward flautist and singer Sav Malbaski in a road accident last week. He will be greatly missed. At the Baldock & Letchworth folk club last night we raised £50 for the Welsh Air Ambulance, Jude, Sav's wife has asked for donation there instead of flowers. I have copies of the 2001 Tam Lin CD "Back on The Road" on which Sav features with some lovely flute, guitar and vocals. He also wrote one of the tunes and one of the songs on the album. Any one who would like a copy, please send me £11.50 made payable to Mad Nanny Music, and the £10 cost of the CD will be donated to the Welsh Air Ambulance. The £1.50 is for postage. Best regards Alan Hewson |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: The PA Date: 19 Oct 06 - 08:36 AM The Archers are not from Birmingham, they're from a fictional village taken from the names of Hanbury and Feckenham. It's taking ages It covers everything - the death of Grace, Shula on the pill, Nelson's criminality, Doris's death when Gwen whatsit couldn't get up the Pebble Mill Steps any more I've got to the 80's now so perhaps it will liven up It's a great shame about Sav - he did play at Barton with Tam Lin and he was very talented Much better than my knowledge of Brum |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Cathie Date: 20 Oct 06 - 06:01 AM I went to Redbourn Folk Club last night It was a great evening - loads of singers & players Some brilliant music Ross was the penultimate show stopper with 3 of his self penned classics. Despite his youthful appearance, too many late nights take their toll and he can lose his thread. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Scrump Date: 22 Oct 06 - 01:25 PM Apologies for not saying anything earlier, but I've been down in Wales for the past week, in a computer-free zone. I was very sad to hear of Sav's death, and had been planning to meet up with him (he had relocated with his family to south-west Wales from the Herts/Beds area) while I was in the area, only to get the sad news from Alan on the day I arrived there. I was very much looking forward to meeting him again but it was not to be. As Ross says, Sav was a very talented flautist/whistle player, guitarist, singer and songwriter. I last had the great pleasure of playing with him in the band at Broadstairs. He leaves a wife and two young children, which makes his death all the more tragic. I hope some of those who knew him will support Alan's initiative and purchase the CD, which includes contributions by Sav. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 23 Oct 06 - 05:20 AM Happy Monday It's open mic this week at the Bull on Wednesday (25th) - all styles seem to appear Message from Theo at Unicorn: North Hertfordshire's favourite Ceilidh Band LAUGHING GRAVY return after the summer break, re-vitalised and refreshed, to offer the very best of English acoustic dance music to the renowned Unicorn Ceilidhs. Based on years of experience, the band's style is firmly rooted in the English tradition, but draws its influences from far and wide. French, Scottish, Welsh and American roots are explored in an eclectic repertoire that gives energy to the dancers, and leads them into the figures and forms of the dances. Featuring fiddle, accordion, melodeon, rhythm guitar and bass, the arrangements combine to keep the dancers up all evening! Caller for the dance is our good friend and most excellent supporter of the Ceilidhs – MALCOLM NORTH. Under Malcolm's spell everybody becomes a better, more athletic dancer – or so it seems! The interval entertainment this month is from local side BALDOCK MIDNIGHT MORRIS. Please note this is a change to the advertised entertainment. Unicorn Ceilidhs take place generally on the last Friday of the month at Hitchin Town Hall, Brand Street, Hitchin. Tickets will also be on sale for our grand New Year's Eve 'BIG CEILIDH' – last year they sold out by November, so get your tickets early! Doors open at 7.30 for an 8.00 p.m. start, with an 11.30 p.m. finish – entry is only £7.50 for adults and £4 for children under 14. Tickets are available at the door, or in advance from 01582 733113 / 724261 There's also a real ale bar, with a selection from the Potton Brewery, and soft drinks. Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 25 Oct 06 - 03:36 AM Hi all - I finished the book It didn't liven up - what a ghastly bore Luckily, the real thing is a bit more interesting Who'd have thought David Archer's eye would be turned by that old flame Sophie and then his wife Ruth wants to jump in bed with the herdsman, Sam, who chucked his girlfriend Kirsty who works with Helen Archer (whose boyfriend hung himself), and was the ex girlfriend of Tom Archer who trashed a GM crop and lost a brother in a tractor accident whilst going out with Haley (whilst two timing her), who now lives with Roy (who was into rascist attacks - went out with Kate Archer who was a folkie and he still has her baby - she now lives in South Africa with a Zulu shoe maker) Do you surrender? |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Cathie Date: 25 Oct 06 - 05:40 AM Have you ever thought of writing a book yourself? Where's Roy (hope this is the right name - long beard, amusing songs, last seen at the morris dancing in Barton) these days? I shall be there as usual tonight tuned ahead - my neice will be in London accompanied my Mark. I somehow think it's going to cost me. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 25 Oct 06 - 06:07 AM No - I haven't seen Roy since I played guitar for him; at one of his barn dances in June (nough said) Write a book - I don't think I could get to the standards as displayed by Rainbow - the childrens programme: The sketch opens with Zippy peeling a banana..... Zippy: "One skin, two skin, three skin, four " George: "Zippy, where is Bungle?" Zippy: "I think Geoffrey is trying to get him up" We see a view of the door and hear Bungle moaning from behind it. Bungle: "Geoffrey, I can't get it in" Geoffrey: "You managed it last night" Bungle: "I know, lets try it round the Otherway. Ooooooh, I've got it in" Bungle and Geoffrey enter the studio with Bungle carrying a hammer and peg kit Bungle: "Would you stick this on the shelf, George" George: "I can't reach, you'll have to stick it up yourself, Bungle." Geoffrey (to camera) "Hello everyone, today we are talking about playing" Bungle: "Playing with each other, Geoffrey?" Geoffrey: "Yes Bungle, do you have a special friend that you like to play with?" George: "Yesterday we played with each other's balls. Are we going to play with our friend's balls today? Bungle: "Yes, and we can play with our twangers as well." Geoffrey (to camera) "Have you seen Bungles twanger?" Zippy: "Oh I have, I showed him how to pluck with it." Bungle: "It's my plucking instrument." Geoffrey asks the audience if they can pluck like Bungle Zippy: "I can, I'm the best plucker here." George: "And I'm good at banging. My peg's hard isn't it Zippy? Zippy: "Well of course it is, Your peg wouldn't go in if it was soft." Geoffrey: "Let's get back to Bungle's twanger." Bungle (excited) "Oooooh Geoffrey, we could all play with our twangers couldn't we? Let's play the plucking song. Rod and Roger can get their instruments out and Jane has got two lovely Maracas." Singers Rod, Freddy and Jane enter. Freddy: "We could hear you all banging away" Rod: " Banging can be fun." Jane: "Ooooh yes, and I was banging away all last night with Rod and Freddy." Freddy ( looking sad ) "Yes, but it broke my plucking instrument." Rod ( to Jane ) "Do you want to blow on my pipe while I'm twanging away?" Jane: "Oh no, I was banging away with Freddy last night. But would you like to play with my maracas? Zippy: "No, let's just pluck away with our twangers." George: "Yes, it doesn't matter what size our twanger is." Zippy: "I've got a big red one." George: "I've only got a tiny twanger. But it works well and I like to play with it." Geoffrey (to viewers) "Well, have you got your twangers out? And remember, you can bang your balls at the same time. If you haven't got any, ask a friend if you can play with his. Now, let's all play the plucking song." Everyone in studio: "Pluck, pluck, pluck along, we're going to pluck all day." |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Cathie Date: 25 Oct 06 - 06:18 AM You can be cynical. Some younger busy mothers of the time were only too pleased to have a TV rainbow break. Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Scrump Date: 25 Oct 06 - 07:19 AM Ta for that Ross! Some of the things I've got lined up over the next few days are just me going to see things rather than take part in them, apart from a gig on Saturday (can't remember what/where for the mo - might be a private one, I need to check), and rehearsals for different things on the other nights. I'm planning to go and see George P at Wymondley and Fairport in the Plinston, as in Alan's announcement above (those are the 'watch and listen' ones) so if you or any other Mudcatters are going it would be nice to meet up over a beer (at least in Wymondley, don't know what they have in the Plinston, probably keg rubbish but I could be wrong - let's hope I am!) |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 26 Oct 06 - 08:38 AM Hey PA - I saw there was another big armed robbery down your way last week Are there loads of Sweeney type jags flying up and down the M5? They must be very slim whales Did anyone see the pictures of a pelican eating a pigeon yesterday in a London Park I suppose the tourists were saying - watch the birdie |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: The PA Date: 26 Oct 06 - 08:46 AM Yep it was the secret Natwest giant money box at Tamworth, you know the one that nobody knew anything about - except everyone who worked on the industrial estate. They rammed the wall with a skip lorry and drove straight in. They obviously used very strong bricks for that one. The only police cars you see flying about here are the ones just going off duty. How very exotic Pelicans in Hyde Park we only have shopping trollies in our ponds. I have a book on my dest about the Bunceford Oil Terminal fire last year. The pictures are amazing, have you all seen a copy, well worth getting. My husband has been away for three days on a cider making course. Very worrying! Thats all the news from sunny Worcestershire - what I've seen of it this week. The M5 was scary, but they're making progress with the A30 bye pass. |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Ross Date: 26 Oct 06 - 08:59 AM Hi PA - yeah I know all about the Buncefield thingy I was there I work three miles away on Mondays and Wednesday I had to watch the flames licking the horizon as I measured me do dahs I was expecting to see an oil tank suddenly fly across the sky And I didn't get a letter from the Queen offering her support and good wishes - do you think she knows? We have the secret headquarters of NATO near Watford - it has a sign and everything Headline - husband lost in cyder space |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: The PA Date: 27 Oct 06 - 03:28 AM Road rage only on Fridays? I have it every morning from a lovelly gentleman in a very large BMW. We meet on a single track lane and he point blank refuses to reverse back into a space even if he's the nearest, last week I couldn't go back cos the postman was delivering and had left his door open on his van, so we had to wait for the postman to return and back up. Every morning he has his window down hurling abuse at me and shaking his fist, but I just smile. One morning he screamed that the lane was too small for my vehicle. He must be so stressed when he gets to work if thats how he starts his day. Mates think I should take it more seriously, but hey ho he's got to catch me first. Thats the end of the serious bit, one of our engineers has just tried to get to a door without opening it first. The whole office is roaring with laughter !! |

I should get back for the Bull outing to the Bucks Head in Little Wymondley tonight. |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Scrump Date: 28 Oct 06 - 07:29 AM It was good to see Ross at George's gig last night - were the rest of you the ones in the other bar trying to drown him out? ;-) Anyhow, it was a cracking gig - not often you get a chance to see an artist of George's calibre free of charge (I still seem to have spent all my money on food, drink and a CD though) ;-) |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Cathie Date: 28 Oct 06 - 12:56 PM I was there - arrived late and left promptly - all M25d out. What a day's travelling. Down the A10, couldn't get on M25, down to North Circular, up M11, thought I was going north to Cambridge and turned round - ended up back on North Circular. Blackwell tunnel south shut. Finally found the A13 and then over bridge to sunny Kent. Then coming back traffic was absolutely chocka from A21 to Dartford tunnel. I learnt how to put the clock back in my car, caught up with the world news on the radio and made 3 phone calls. In all my years travelling this route, it has never been so bad. And all on George's night! If you read this - thanks for listening - nobody else will. Moanie Minnie |

Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: Scrump Date: 29 Oct 06 - 04:15 AM Hi breezy - yes, he had a neat little 'PA in a briefcase' (Peavey I think). Most of the time it was up to the job for the size of the venue, even with the background noise - mostly from the other bar, although occasionally people came into the bar where we were and started talking loudly as if George wasn't there. Bl**dy rude, but b*gg*r all you can do about it in that type of setting. In spite of that, those of us who went to see George had a great evening (I hope I can speak for the others there) and I have a feeling George enjoyed himself too - he ceratinly gave that impression(although I wouldn't like to speak for him of course). |
Subject: RE: Bull, Barton, Beds October things 2006 From: breezy Date: 29 Oct 06 - 11:56 AM We had a venue like that in St Albans once, because it was free people werent used to the etiquette of a folk gig, but eventually we didnt even have to turn up the P A and we had stopped the smoking!!
