Great to see you all. Stories later : ) ... oh, yes, there are stories. Dani |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: open mike Date: 06 Oct 08 - 02:13 PM is there a sound track to this? Were there any recordings taken? I would love to hear what some of these pictures SOUND like...the one with the guy in the kilt witht he hats and wigs intrigues me.. and the Moose Turd Pie group.... |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 06 Oct 08 - 02:27 PM The guy in the kilt is Amiel Schotz. He was telling a wonderful story in Scottish dialect that he learned on a music tour of Scotland with Ed Miller. I think the hats were his own idea. :-) Amiel was born in Glasgow, now lives in Israel, and he and his wife time their U.S. visits to include the Getaway whenever possible. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bobert Date: 06 Oct 08 - 03:07 PM Ha! It's not the pictures ya'll have here but the ones that ***can't*** be shown from the little blues thing that we threw yesterday... Whew!!! I ain't cooled down yet... But that is another story... B~ |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Janie Date: 06 Oct 08 - 03:20 PM Bobert - I, for one, am going to be very, very nice to Dani's oldest daughter for the forseeable future....at least until I can get my hands on her camera and find the delete button.... But folks - I do gotta say that Bobear is sumpin' else on that cigar box guitar. LEJ's harmonica was so hot I swear I saw smoke risin' up from it, and the finish blistered on the neck of Amos' guitar. Iff'n you was thinkin' pennywhistle ain't a blues instrument - think again. Terry (Leadfingers) was fantastic, as was Linda Goodman on the washboard. All us womenzfolk was purty hot too, what with our feathers and all:>) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bobert Date: 06 Oct 08 - 03:41 PM Understatement of 2008: "purty hot"... Shoot, if ya'lls was any hotter than ya'll woulda burned the cabin down to the ground... Good Gawd, All Mighty!!! B~ |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Leadfingers Date: 06 Oct 08 - 05:22 PM Question ! Was Genie's laptop actually RECORDING ? Or even worse , sending it somewhere else ?? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix (Captions!) From: Wincing Devil Date: 06 Oct 08 - 06:18 PM Captions provided by various folks are available here. I must make a point next year to take the day before and after off! |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Nancy King Date: 06 Oct 08 - 06:24 PM Thanks for the pix, Vince! I submitted a few "suggested captions" -- I guess Vince has to do something in his software for them to appear. Just tried to identify some of the individuals. Hopefully you can see what a fine time we all had, and what a beautiful spot West River is. Start planning NOW to come next year! That's October 2-5, 2009! Mike, the Moose Turd Pie group consisted of all of the Getaway attendees among the many people involved in a project making a CD of various people singing Utah Phillips' songs, with all profits to go to Utah's widow, Joanna. I think there are about 28 tracks so far, with some very big names among them. Should be released in the spring, I think. Dan Schatz and Jacqui Morse are the movers and shakers on this project, so you could PM either of them for more details. At the Getaway concert they did Utah's song, "Singing Through the Hard Times." If you don't get the "Moose Turd Pie" reference, you need to bone up on your Utah Phillips lore. A wonderful Getaway indeed! Nancy |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 06 Oct 08 - 06:30 PM Vince- Very well done and there is firm evidence that the C. Fox Smith workshop actually happened. I'm not even home, having stopped in my brother's place in Brooklyn. My brain is pretty much fried and it will take me a couple of days to process all the wonderful memories cluttering my brain. Thanks again to the FSGW for organizing this very special weekend gathering. Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Janie Date: 06 Oct 08 - 08:01 PM Aarrrgh! All my pictures are blurred - (note to self - do not tap foot in time to music while shooting pictures.) Oh well. I didn't take a lot pictures this year - too busy singing! Janie |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 06 Oct 08 - 08:11 PM Vince, how can captions be edited? In picture #56, that's Maryrrf singing with Leadfingers. There's more Getaway stuff on this thread, started by Skarpi: as well as a Getaway Lost and Found thread. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Tinker Date: 06 Oct 08 - 09:59 PM Wow !! I never imagined a Getaway where I didn't pack enough summer clothes ! The weather was amazing and the people grand. I'm stil processing an amazing combination of music and well..... unique experiences. I didn't bring a video camera and when I wasn't rolling on the floor on Saturday night (or was it Sunday morning--that's a bit of the blurr....) It was an amazing exerience. The Boberts Blues Jam absolutely rocked the house in a honky tonk, outside of time kinda way. Now Janie, I can't say I'm not sighing with relief that some of those pictures didn't survive. However Jacqui also has photos .... I wait in trepedation... Peter T and LEJ absolutely have to post the Full Moon Blues they put togehter during workshop. More as It beings to process. So much love and laughter "...working for the good times to come..." |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Lonesome EJ Date: 06 Oct 08 - 10:32 PM The Blues session was less of a workshop than a sweatshop, Tinker! Full moon on a hell-bound bus was what it was. The Big Bottom Beauties jus shook it on down to th' ground's what they done. (Christ, now I'm starting to talk like Bobert) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: artbrooks Date: 06 Oct 08 - 10:36 PM I don't think Genie will be home for a few days, but she said that her laptop did record the Sunday night show (I'm not sure about Saturday) and she will investigate the idea of setting up a password-protected U-Tube site to post the video on. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ebbie Date: 06 Oct 08 - 11:01 PM What's the matter with Susette? I do hope it is something trivial and passing? It is wonderful to see the pictures- but I miss seeing MMario and Lorcan and KT and ME! I'm especially happy to be remnded of Lucy and David. Lucy's unique voice and David's mastery of the harp - bluegrass, no less! are vivid memories. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 06 Oct 08 - 11:03 PM artbrooks & Genie -- that would be fantastic. I had to miss the entire Sunday concert and having heard all the rave reviews (most especially of Bobert/Leadfingers/EJ's set -- I would dearly love to see some or all of it! Rita F |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 06 Oct 08 - 11:08 PM Whoa! I missed Janie's earlier question about Susette. I "remember" seeing her this weekend -- is my memory out of order again? Or did she have a problem during the weekend? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Tinker Date: 06 Oct 08 - 11:18 PM She wasn't doing well and they headed home rather quickly, but Micca has since had an email that it has passed and she is now doing better. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Amos Date: 06 Oct 08 - 11:51 PM That Bobert Blues Jam was smoking all right, and the late night dancing at various spots was something to make your jaw drop. Hanging out with Peter T and having deep talk with him and lonesome and --wait for it--Bearded Bruce, and so many other conversations and songs my puir haid is still reeling. It was very strange--from the moment we headed south from Baltimore to the moment we re-entered the airport road on the way out Monday, it was like the bubble that Dorothy wakes up from at the end of Oz. It was just a natural continuation picking up where last year's ended, and it was unphased and untouched by the passage of time in between. Kind of like passing the signpost on the highway up ahead, and entering the Twilight Zone. Special thanks to Dani, Tink, Mary, Janie, Annie and Charmion for their contributions to the Annual Collection of Memories of Perfect Pulchritude. And to hundreds of others, for good times, and rip-roaring good music. A |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Janie Date: 07 Oct 08 - 12:03 AM Art, please tell us you are talking about the Sunday night concert and not the pre-dinner "show" in Peace Lodge....and I am forever in your debt for showing me how to use the coffee press in my hour of need! Seriously magical moments....Something like 4:00 am Sunday morning....Barry and Mick making great music in between insults....Keith wandering in a little after 5:00 am to share and join in with his music....LEJ singing Apolitical Blues....Genie's delightful music and spirit....beautifully written songs by Marion....she had most of us in tears in the regional industries workshop with a remarkable song she had written....Carl's amazing playing and singing and leadership - and his amazing reportoire of songs....Amos capturing all of us in the magic of a song he had written straight from his heart....A solitary walk through the woods behind the cabins with big downed trees sporting jewel-toned fungi and moss on logs so green it glowed....observing Bill and Rita's son and noting what a fine young man he is - how could he not be, coming from those two sets of genes, watching Elena and Holly enjoy themselves thoroughly, such beautiful girls, both inside and out. The special warmth and loveliness of Rita and the pleasure of seeing she and Bill perform together at the concert - first time in their 30 year history at the Getaway! Getting to spend a lot of time with Linda Goodman - an absolutely delightful soul if ever there was one - a wee little woman with such heart! Tinker and Sins - I see you once a year, but that is all it takes with kindred spirits to know we are connected at our cores. Falling in love with Joe's blue eyes, bright smile and lovely, sane spirit, like I do every year. Dani, Elena, Holly and I walked over toward the end of the Utah Phillips Tribute and sat outside on the steps, waiting to say goodbye to so many in there that we love before hitting the road Sunday evening. The reprise of "Singing Through the Hard Times" drew us up the steps into the infirmary to stand outside the door and join our voices with the rest. To hear all these voices of all these different people raised together in a song such as this seemed the embodiment of the spirit of the Getaway. I say this every year, and I mean it every year with the same fervor as the first time - it is a fine and rare thing that you FSGW folks have created out of your love of the music and your rich hearts and minds. I am so grateful to be invited to share in this one weekend that has become such a blessing and grace in my life. Oh, I nearly forgot. Joe Offer and I both slept with Blake Madison. Janie |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: katlaughing Date: 07 Oct 08 - 12:10 AM Oh, my! That Blake does get around, but I never knew that about You, Janie, and Joe?! Saints preserve is! It sounds wonderful beyond compare, folks, thanks for sharing with us what stayed at home.:-/ WD/Vince, I didn't mean to put you on the spot. Thanks for the captions! |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Peter T. Date: 07 Oct 08 - 07:52 AM I certainly don't remember any of the lyrics to the Full Moon Blues.....that is for others, perhaps.... but it was a supreme pleasure to meet LEJ and Amos, partners in crime. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 07 Oct 08 - 10:31 AM This was maybe my tenth Getaway. It was the best weather ever! I especially enjoyed reconnecting with an old friend, Jim Bean of The Beans. For a few years, Jim and I worked at the same drug program and sang together alot and even did a few gigs. The Getaway is like a musical reunion. I meet with people who I usually see only once a year at the Getaway and it feels like we're just getting up from our last day last year (I hope that makes sense). I was a bit under the weather physically 'cause I had an infected tooth that wasn't calming down the way it was supposed to with the antibiotic. I actually went to the cabin after dinner on Saturday for a quick nap before the evening concert. It ended up as a full night's sleep! That is a Getaway first for me. I am sorry that I missed so much good music. Thanks to Songster Bob for helping me with the words to "Louise" at the Sunday night concert. It seemed that the audience was singing along and when I forgot the words, it looked like everybody else had forgotten them, too. Very strange. Well, I must go back to work. Roger in Baltimore |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Big Mick Date: 07 Oct 08 - 10:52 AM I suspect you will all enjoy Genie's video's. She was recording most of the singarounds in the Peace cabins, so you will hear the banter. She also recorded the concerts. I won't reveal the person, but one of the funniest moments ever happened one morning. Only at a music camp! I was cursing that Spaw wasn't there to catch it, because it would have become a rambling story thread, and would have starred the Reg boys. I had come back to sneak in a shower. Afterwards I am at the sink, shaving, and the door opens and someone comes in and goes into the toilet stall to have a morning constitutional. He didn't see me because the door opens towards me. It is quiet, and the usual assorted grunts and burps and other forms of toilet melodies are going on. Suddenly it goes quiet for about 10 seconds, then the person in the stall sings: In a beautiful and rousing Gospel fashion. Then the toilet flushes. I had a hard time not swallowing my toothbrush. The timing was impeccable. By the way, the cabins were wonderful, but what the hell was that greasy smudge on the window of the door in the Peace cabin. You would think they would clean them things. It looked like two quarter moons kissing, with little wispy marks all around them. I think I will write to the camp and complain. On a serious note, thanks to Matt Watroba for introducing me to it, as well as Anne Hills and David Roth for writing it, for the song "That Kind of Grace". I hadn't sang it for quite a while, and came on it while rummaging through my song sheets (a habit of mine at Getaways). I love dearly when this gathering of supremely talented and savvy folksingers come together, and they listen, and then contribute to your song. It is a joy that one can only know when singing in front of other performers and fans of this music. Standing in front and getting the full effect of the gathered voices ....... I just have a hard time describing what flows through one's soul when it happens. Thank you, FSGW, for doing what you do. You have impact on me that I don't know how to repay other than to say from the bottom of my heart that I thank you. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Fortunato Date: 07 Oct 08 - 11:27 AM Thanks to all that asked about Susette. We left in a hurry on Sunday at noon, and didn't get to say goodbye everyone, sorry about that. I took Susette to the hospital in Silver Spring. We spent the afternoon and the evening there, but eventually they found that she had passed a Kidney stone. Very, very painful, but it's all over and she's doing well. Sweet Dani arranged for Pete and Grace Kraemer (who saved us big time) to bring our second car home, since we'd had to come in two cars, and everything came out well in the end. Good Getaway. Cheers Chance |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: GUEST,beardedbruce Date: 07 Oct 08 - 12:06 PM Good to hear it was nothing more serious- though less painful would have been nice. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 07 Oct 08 - 12:13 PM Oh my, Chance! I KNOW about kidney stones. But very glad to hear it was no worse and that she is ok. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Lonesome EJ Date: 07 Oct 08 - 12:40 PM "they found that she had passed a Kidney stone" is actually good news, Chance. Obstruction, and then removal, is the alternative, as I learned Christmas of 2005. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Lonesome EJ Date: 07 Oct 08 - 01:10 PM The raucous noise from some midnight porch may pour An Offer made, to up and close the door In moony darkness such noise may never cease But fear not that moon, for it is the Moon of Peace Chorus Moon of Peace, shine in our hearts tonight Your glowing orb still lingers in my mind though the window pane is cold, thy grace is bright How can I leave such memories behind? Once a railroad bum on his way to some new town was collared by a bull on night patrol With his tattered, weathered knickers hanging down Butt the bum just smiled, and let the moon shine from his soul Chorus Bodhran solo |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Amos Date: 07 Oct 08 - 01:54 PM IS that a moon I see? On the doorway glass? Or just a photograph Of some folky's ass? Or a drunken glow From a fallen torch? No I think, it must be Lonesome E-jay's zorch. See that man, backed up to the doorway Dropping trou, drunk as a lord, hey He ain't mad, it's just the crazy night Maybe he had too much whiskey Songs and ladies made him frisky Let's just tell him Thanks for the pale moonlight. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 07 Oct 08 - 02:47 PM Leadfingers, Yes, Genie's laptop was actually recording during parts of Bobert's Blues Band. I'm looking for a way to make 'em available to selected Mudcatters (notably the ones that are in 'em) short of postin' 'em on that there Ewe Toob. O' course if any of the perpetrators -- er, participants -- wanna keep 'em away from the prying eyes of the other Mudcatters, I'm open to brides. Genie (Currently in Greensboro, NC, recovering from 2 all-nighters and a third most-of-nighter at the Getaway. It's all Big Mick's fault. Plus Amos, Carl, Ron Davies, Marion, Claire, Tinker, Steve, and a few other crazy people. *g*) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 07 Oct 08 - 02:51 PM Tinker: "Peter T and LEJ absolutely have to post the Full Moon Blues they put togehter during workshop." Tink, the full moon actually happened the night BEFORE Bobert's Blues Band (well, actually, about 4 AM Sunday). But some people will be relieved to know nobody had a camera. ;D |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 07 Oct 08 - 02:53 PM Oh, and Tinker, that li'l red frilly number you wuz sportin' at the Blues Band blowout was plenty summer-y. Couldn't you have jes' cavorted around in that all weekend? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 07 Oct 08 - 03:07 PM Steve, I had been wondering how come you and Susette seemed to vanish from the Getaway way too soon. I was so looking forward to doing more jamming with you after the Thursday night singaround. So sorry to hear Susette was in so much pain and that both of you had to miss so much of the Getaway, but I'm relieved the problem has passed. (Now that's a pun worthy of my gracious host, Severn.) I do hope both of you are well and recovered from that ordeal now. If Susette and you didn't catch it the first time it was posted, you might find you relate well to the Dylan parody from the nephew of Hugh (The Banjoest): Like A Kidney Stone. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 07 Oct 08 - 03:33 PM Folks, in the past the managers of whatever camp we were in have occasionally enjoyed visiting the post-Getaway threads. You might keep that in mind as you share your wilder experiences. And, that this is a Methodist camp. Much time was spent in finding it, some of us like it very much, and we want to continue to be welcome there. In the past people sometimes read post-Getaway threads and decided it sounded ... well ... like a weekend of wild behavior and drunkenness. It's not!!! It's almost heaven, it's a family weekend, and I don't want people to think differently. And even if it's tempting late in the wee hours to be somewhat uninhibited and irreverent, not only would I prefer not to know the sordid details, I'd definitely prefer that the whole world not know them. End of scold. Thanks, Rita F |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: GUEST,micca Date: 07 Oct 08 - 03:48 PM Oh Moon, that shows its face not its back side and 'neath a bushel its bright radiance hide in windows shines the whole hid deep inside so well concealed inside its great divide |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Amos Date: 07 Oct 08 - 04:01 PM Well, on the more ordinary front, I must confess that have never so enjoyed such a rich array of traditional music, presented by such fine, friendly, God-fearing folks from every walk of life, and their orderly, considerate manners of presentation. Each song well sung, well-researched, with interesting A |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Tinker Date: 07 Oct 08 - 04:14 PM Genie, there was a 're-cap' blues memorializing the event at the end of the blues jam. As for some of the footage .... well I'm definately on the limited distribution side (hmmmm... ) Check this site Yes DVD and see if they have a location near you. It's a pretty painless process if you can burn it on a CD they will clean it up and I'll happily pay for a copy. And if you then destroy the original.... As for uplifting moments, I'd add Marion's song about the The cellist of Sarajevo it was a shining moment at the concert Saturday night. Girl, both your song writing and delivery have grown amazingly. It was good to see you again. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Peter T. Date: 07 Oct 08 - 05:53 PM Echoing Ferrara (so nice to meet you!), we need to emphasize that everyone was the soul of discretion. There was Methodism in our madness. I will even forbear discussion of the walrus tank. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: GUEST,Dani Date: 07 Oct 08 - 08:29 PM Whereas my children were in tow, and looking up (or down) at their elders for direction on the path of righteousness and good taste, and Whereas they may or may not chance upon these threads (as may God knows who else), and Whereas I pride myself on doing nothing that would shame my maker (even if it involves peacock feathers She herself designed), and Whereas the worst breach of good taste and righteousness *I* witnessed were Severn's puns, I concur with Rita's admonishment, and rescind my use of the word 'Bacchanal' to describe what occurred in the bright daylight of that sunny Sunday afternoon. Dani |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 07 Oct 08 - 08:37 PM Oh well. I'm feeling horribly embarrassed and "wrong" for having offended; and I'd hate to see the thread slide into oblivion down a slippery slope of mediocrity and niceness; but I ain't gonna take it back. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Lonesome EJ Date: 07 Oct 08 - 09:04 PM Well, I don't think there was anything offensive in my song, do you? In fact, I had planned on singing it next year at the Getaway. And as for drinking, I don't recall anyone drinking in my presence. That doesn't mean they didn't have a fifth of Old Slapentickle stashed in their Rav 4. Oh no, I believe everyone conducted themselves in a manner both fitting and proper, considering the circumstances. As to the Blues Jamboree, everybody was actually DANCING and SINGING and LAUGHING, activities which I believe even Methodists condone, and one in which I will continue to indulge with enthusiasm until I physically can't. No one hurt or insulted anyone, no one damaged anything, everyone had fun, no one that I saw was out of control or dangerous, and people were both courteous and kind to one another. Those are the important things in my mind. Many of us who had a ton of fun at the Peace Lodge until 5 am, were in the Gospel Sing at 10:30 am singing Are You Washed in the Blood of the Lamb, and back at the rowdy fun in Bobert's Blues Session at 3 pm. As the happy stall-occupier in Mick's story said, "Hallelujah!" |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Leadfingers Date: 07 Oct 08 - 09:33 PM Bearing in mind that almost the entire UK Folk Scene is Pub Based , the 'Dry' aspect of West River is NO problem , at least as far as I am concerned . At a 'home' weekend festival I am as happy as anyone to spend time (And Money) at a session in the Beer Tent . The fact that there was NO Beer Tent did not in the least detract from the enjoyment I had , making music with such a wonderful group of friends The Blues Bash in the Peace Cabin was an example of people getting high on Music and Companionship , NO need for ANY artificial Stimulants at all . |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ferrara Date: 07 Oct 08 - 11:00 PM Yeah Janie I know you're right, thank you. The one thing I do regret is that there's no cute little happy-face icon (that I know of)to show that one is exaggerating for effect in using the expression "sordid details." It's early yet, more pictures may well show up. Certainly more memories will surface once we are over the shock of not being at the Getaway. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Lonesome EJ Date: 07 Oct 08 - 11:42 PM And Rita, a huge THANKS to you, and Charlie, and Bill D, and Dean, and everyone who works so hard to make this event such a wonderful experience. I don't know of a friendlier, more interesting group of people than the FSGW folks. And you couldn't find a more beautiful spot to hold forth. I really enjoyed the Dick Rodgers tribute session. The stories, songs, and remembrances were both funny and touching. Not really knowing Dick well, I felt I came to know him through the conversation among his friends. I also wanted to thank Kendall and Jacqui for their splendid performance of the Masefield poem, and the beautiful song that followed. Barry Finn as well, for the gusto and heartfelt, well, volume of his sea chanties. Especially Friday night when his voice was crystal clear. My appreciation to Annie and Julia for letting me accompany them in some old time fiddle tunes while the sun painted Chesapeake Bay in hues of pink and red. To Micca for being the jolliest and brightest animated garden gnome I have ever met. To Peter for being as honest and funny in person as he is in this forum. To Mick for being so kind as to, when I requested he play John O'Dreams to help lull me off to bed and complimented him on his relaxing voice, play Roddy McCorley at full volume. To Amos and Janie for being as good friends for three days a year as most that I have for 365. To all of you and those I didn't mention but remember well, a sincere thanks, and may the Moon of Peace light your way until we meet again. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: GUEST,Songster Bob Date: 08 Oct 08 - 12:47 AM Good photos, mostly -- sometimes a photo of an unaccompanied singer looks like someone yawning, just standing there with their mouth open -- but what can you do about that? I ended up "backing up" to the main site -- were all those photos yours, Mr. Devil? If so, I wish you had gotten some good shots of my band's appearance at the Ft. McHenry Defender's Day celebrations. I looked through both of the 2007 sets of such photos, but nothing of our musical appearance. Sigh. Bob |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ebbie Date: 08 Oct 08 - 01:26 AM Well, it all sounds pretty bawdy to me. After all, what else on earth could Genie mean by being "open to brides"? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 08 Oct 08 - 01:37 AM Rita, no offense taken at your 'scolding'. The Getaway was very family friendly and, well, tame. That doesn't mean we didn't let our respective muses loose (and a loose muse is a heckuva lot more benign and inspirational than, say, a loose moose). But should any non-Mudcatters be lurking (and you are most welcome, friends!), please be advised that the stories told in Song Challenges! and other folk songs should never be confused with historical documents. :) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 08 Oct 08 - 01:41 AM Ebbie, did I say "brides?" Well, that would'a been Bobert or Big Mick or some o' the other guys. What I'm open to, o' course, is bribes! §; D |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 08 Oct 08 - 02:07 AM Update: I have video of almost all of the Sunday night concert. (I didn't catch the beginning of Micca's wonderful Ravens song, so I skipped recording it, but he and I seemed to agree that we should let him 'finish' the song before we introduce it to the world via videotape. I also didn't get in recording position quick enough to catch the beginning of Claire's song, but I got most of it.) I'm editing the clips, as much as feasible, to separate songs/acts. I also got a lot of the Doo Wop workshop and parts of Bobert's Blues Band. I did not get set up in recording position Saturday night before the concert started, so, sad to say, I didn't get most of it. But next year I'll make sure I've cleared out a few dozen gb on my hard drive and also mastered the technique of saving stuff to DVD, so I should be able to video with greater abandon. (All you people who pooh-pooh Macs should take a gander at the new iPods and MacBooks and their easy-peasy videoing capabilities. Neener - neener.) I'll also share some stills from the videos. Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Oct 08 - 09:37 AM I really appreciate the captions, given that I'm terrible at learning names and I only knew about 20 people to begin with. Lyrics are not a problem for me but those names! Dennis Cook did his usual fine job of doing sound for the evening concerts. It's a pleasure to work with someone like him who understands the music with regard to sound set-up, and is patient with their volunteer help. Art, I was also early to bed, although more like 1 am than midnight. I especially liked the late session with Dick Swain in the Retreat Center Saturday night, and I'm sure it got even better after I retired. Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: jacqui.c Date: 08 Oct 08 - 09:48 AM I got the photos onto Flickr and you can find them here. I didn't take very many - too busy having fun and must thank Kendall and Claire for taking over the camera when I was busy. The photos I took at the Blues Session were with Elena's camera so we will have to wait for those. We got back yesterday after an appointment with Kendall's surgeon, who is very pleased with his progress. Right now I'm still processing the weekend in what is left of my brain and will post my comments once recovery is a little further on. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 08 Oct 08 - 10:00 AM Some scattered thoughts of singing that I'll cherish: Dick Swain leading "Figurehead Carver" Barry Finn leading "Hard Times in Old Virginia" Dave Diamond leading "To The Lifeboats" The harmony workshop! John Roberts leading Goerge Ward's "The Boatman's Cure" Micca leading serious songs! Amos at 4 in the morning still going strong at the Peace (!) Cottage, with his chorus of old Federalists! Time to hit the road again! I missed last night's debate but there was a really nice session at Cameron's in Gloucester! You should have been there! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Dan Schatz Date: 08 Oct 08 - 11:09 AM I can only say that Moose Turd Pie sounded better than we looked. It was good to get everybody together for Utah's "Singing Through the Hard Times" - the double CD set by the same name will, as Jacqui says, be out sometime early next year. It's to early to give all the details, but hopefully we'll be able to make some more definitive announcement soon. Since Kendall, Jacqui and I are the primary organizers, you can be assured that all details will be shared with Mudcat. Geeta and I spent a lot of time running after Kiran, which was fun but exhausting! He loved the music, and during the Saturday night concert kept running outside to look at boats, cars and the moon, and then saying "More music!" and running back in. He did wake up early, though - about 4:30 - so I took him on a walk and found Elizabeth Laprelle, Darriel Day and Julia Friend still in the retreat center trading songs. (Lisa Null got up and joined us, too.) One side effect of leading a lot of workshops AND running after Kiran was that I didn't feel like I had time to socialize as much as I would have liked. But it was still wonderful to see everyone, even if hastily. Dan |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Marion Date: 08 Oct 08 - 04:09 PM Wow, what a weekend. I had a great time getting acquainted or reacquainted with so many Mudcatters, not to mention the local FSGW people. There were some very memorable moments in the workshops and concerts, but I thought the highlights were the late night sessions where there was a more intimate feel. I went down in the hopes of being able to introduce some of my own songs, but not being sure how welcome singer-songwriter material would be. It turned out that my songs were very well received, for which I'm very grateful, and that it was a real pleasure to perform them for such an informed and receptive audience. FWIW, the regional industries song that Janie mentioned can be heard here: I Will Bring You Home; and the cellist song Tinker mentioned is here: What He Could Give. Charmion of Ottawa very kindly gave me a drive to and from the getaway, so I had good opportunity to get to know her and pick her (very expansive) mind about some points of history. Also, on the way back we spent a night with Mudcatter Peg and her partner, and I had lots of fun playing with her big dog. Will post more as various specific memories want to announce themselves. Thanks very much to those of you who have posted pictures. Cheers, Marion |

Anyone who's interested in what folks like Colleen, my late wife Vaughn and I have been doing here in upstate NY all these years, along with a bunch of other amazing public folklorists and tradition-bearers (including recently Mudcatter Dave Ruch - just out with a fine album, BTW), can do no better than to click the link to the "Meet the Masters" homepage. Varick Chittenden, the St. Lawrence valley man who has been the guiding spirit of TAUNY all these years, is the folklorist I want to be when I grow up. Alas, he's a bit younger than I. The total was 141 people, about 20 more than last year. Joe, thank you for the link about Colleen. I can't get the sound files to play, but I suspect Bill can show me the trick of it. Those at the Getaway may have noticed & used the color aerial photos of the camp area which were on the registration table. I got them at this site using the Microsoft VE (labels) setting. IF your computer supports FLASH, go to 38°49'50.9"N 76°32'29"W to see the camp from any height. FlashEarth is a standalone site which is actually a subset of http://www.neave.com/, an amazing site set up by a young programmer in London. Google Earth does that too, but it seems that there are varied results depending on the program's database. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 09 Oct 08 - 08:50 PM Another nice thing I picked up at Getaway was Dave Diamond's songbook of outrageous parodies and commentaries on office life in Washington, D.C. I knew that Diamond was a member of Boarding Party, one of the most influential sea music groups that have grqced this wide world. And I knew he did occasional satirical songs such as "The Folksinger's Lament" but I had no idea of all the other creative ditties he had composed. There's also a "fake" CD included with the song book which demonstrates how some of the songs might be sung, sometimes with alternative lyrics! Very useful to those of us who are musically illiterate. Dave and Barry did a fine job of coordinating the Sea Shanty Workshop. It was more sparsely attended than three years back but there were some excellent contributions. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 10 Oct 08 - 03:46 PM Sins, I dunno if you gave me the cold or if we both caught it from someone else, but I guess the price I'm paying for trying to run on ca. 4 hr. sleep a night for 3 nights in a row is that I came down with a doozey of a cold/bronchitis by the time I flew back to Portland on Wednesday. (I could pull all-nighters back to back with no prob when I was in my 20s. Can't figure out way the bod can't handle it now.) Anyhoo, foggy sleep-deprived and nasally blocked minds do dumb things like plugging in their laptops in airport terminals, reminding themselves not to forget the power supply cord when packing up the laptop, and immediately thereafter walking off with the laptop power supply still plugged into the terminal wall. I finally tracked down the power supply this morning; I knew exactly where and when I left it, in the Raleigh-Durham terminal, but, for the same reason I so easily left it behind, apparently nobody else noticed it till last night. (A white cord plugged into a white wall above a white counter, with the end of the cord flopped behind a row of chairs; very easy to miss.) I should be getting the cord back next Tues. or Wed. (It helps to have a niece who works for American Airlines and based in Raleigh.) Meanwhile, I really don't have anything but short-term emergency access to the MacBook that has my Getaway pics and videos. So it'll be sometime next week before I can post anything or send any videos to Charlie Baum or Dick G. or set up a password-limited website. I did get some really nice footage of a few events, though, and I can easily make stills from the videos too. Stay tuned. G |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charley Noble Date: 10 Oct 08 - 09:26 PM I was forewarned by Andrew and Carole that there was a bug about and I was taking massive dosages of vitamin C. Of course, Gorgeous Gary was also carrying a bug which he only announced after I gave him a warm greetings. But so far so good! Another group I thoroughly enjoyed was The Beans, for their harmony arrangements and tasteful instrumentation; they need to do a new CD! The harmony workshop led by The Kossoy Sisters, Julia Friend and Ken Schatz is another recurring memory for me. The Parodies workshop by Dave Diamond and Micca was hilarious. I provided "Wake Up Susina" explaining that it was the original song while "Wake Up Little Suzie" was actually the parody; I'm not sure if if I convinced anyone but some appeared to be amused. Elizabeth Laprelle was every bit as wonderful as I remember her from a Getaway three years ago. This time I was impressed with the range of songs she sings. And she did sing "Rain and Snow." For the Saturday evening concert I led "Bound Away," a Liverpool outward bound song by old sailor-poet Bill Adams which is a tribute to "Liverpool Packet." And I couldn't have asked for better company for bunkmates; they never made it to bed before 4 am so I actually got some sleep! Cheerily, Charley Noble |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ron Davies Date: 10 Oct 08 - 09:33 PM Charley-- "Wake Up Susina" is a true classic--and one of the musical high points of the weekend. I'm also very impressed with your scholarship in uncovering it. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Tinker Date: 11 Oct 08 - 10:25 AM Perhaps I can chalk it up to the record breaking lack of sleep at this Getaway, or the cold I seem to be sharing with lots of others, but I confess to a bit of a haze around my memories. One that has been floating back with a smile was the time I got to spend with Kiran while his Dad practiced with a few members of Moose Turd Pie before the concert. We rambled around the retreat center looking at the alphabet on the CD boxes... But when we talked about the musicians (despite repeated insistant attempts to be identified as Uncle Mick) Kiran of the sparkling eyes was repeatedly clear that big guy with the guitar was "Mick-ey" It still makes me giggle. Thanks for sharing Dan and Geeta |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: ClaireBear Date: 30 Oct 08 - 11:48 AM I've been remiss -- my friend Ellen Silverberg took many, many wonderful Getaway photos of lots of us and put them up on Flickr a few days ago. I've been so swamped that I haven't had time to cope, but thanks for refreshing this thread just when I have a spare half-a-mo. Here is her note: FSGW 2008 People! At last I've put my photos onto a Flickr site. To see them, go to www.flickr.com/photos/ellenxox/sets/72157608288907937 (clickity click). Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Bill D Date: 30 Oct 08 - 11:59 AM About pictures....ummm.... I brought my camera, got it out and turned it on, only to have nasty message in the viewfinder. It seems my card was at home... in the computer....where I had been downloading everything to have it 'clear' for the Getaway. Embarassing? Why, yes..... after all the years I have taken pics. I am glad others took up the slack.... Mea culpa, mea culpa...mea MAXIMA culpa! Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Ebbie Date: 30 Oct 08 - 12:33 PM Those pictures from Ellen Silverberg are wonderful on a different level. So often, imo, in a music crowd people's faces go flat and emotionless as they/we go "inside". Ellen captured laughter and active listening. |

Genie BTW, one reason I haven't made any stills from my videos and posted them yet is that I kind of promised Charlie and/or Dick G that I wouldn't post people's pics online without their permission. Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 01 Nov 08 - 06:43 PM Thanks, Dick. Maybe it was the videos that were at issue, partly because some of the songs are copyright protected. In any case, I'm very sensitive to the issue of "bad pictures" of people being shared with a lot of others, especially on line. (Of course, it's hard to tell what someone else considers a good or bad picture of themselves.) But I've tried, especially when making screen caps, to eliminate the really bad pics (people looking cross-eyed, picking their noses instead of their banjos, or just plain having a funny-looking facial expression. I've made some screen caps today and I should be able to get some pics posted next week. For the bulk of the next 2 1/2 days I plan to be working to elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden as well as a bunch of Senatorial and House candidates. Genie |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Charlie Baum Date: 02 Nov 08 - 12:59 PM Posting pictures should be fine, because people have been sharing images for years, and we all kind of expect that. You might want to not post pictures of us engaging in activities that would get us into trouble with the retreat center, such as consumption of alcoholic beverages (not that I'm saying we did that, but it's kind of awkward for the Getaway chairpeople to be explaining to the retreat center administration that some of us like to goof around by drinking coffee out of Jack Daniels bottles). We like the place, and want to be able to continue to book it in the future! Posting of videos, on the other hand, really needs to be cleared with each and every individual appearing in any segment to be posted. There are issues of copyrighted material, and there are also issues of performance. For instance, I for one don't think my performance of my song on Sunday night was very good, and that's NOT a version of it I want in circulation. --Charlie Baum |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 07 Nov 08 - 01:28 AM Bill, I don't think I've reposted the same pics. But many I've posted are screencaps from the videos, so some may be very similar to others. (That lets people pick the ones they like best to save.) The exception is the little series of Tinker sharing "BOB" with us in the Peace Cabin in the wee hours of Sunday (IIRC). I've deleted and reposted that series because I left out a pic; I plan to do that again, for the same reason. Aside from that, I don't believe there are any duplicates. G |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Lonesome EJ Date: 20 Dec 08 - 02:57 PM There was a rumor of some video of the Sunday Night Concert? Did anything develop? |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 20 Dec 08 - 04:56 PM Yeah, I got most of it on video, Steve. I'm just trying to figure out how to share it with the people I videoed without making it broadly available. I'd need permission of each performer - and in some cases, copyright holders - to post it in a very public place. However, iMovie doesn't seem to have a direct "burn to DVD" function. I can send the video clips to people's iPhones or post them on YouTube, but I'm still hoping to find a way to burn them to DVD and then send those to Dick. Maybe I'll get some sent to people as Christmas presents. I still need some help identifying all the people I videoed. I was busy 'filming' and didn't take notes on performers' names at the time, and I don't have everyone's name attached to their faces. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix From: Genie Date: 21 Dec 08 - 02:17 AM Thanks, Amos. I figured it was probably something like that. I also just figured out how to "export" the video project to my Movie folder in any of several formats (as opposed to "saving" the project or burning it directly to DVD). I think once it's been "exported" as a QuickTime movie (or other format), I can then burn it to DVD. The problem re names is I'd like to add the name of the person or persons in the video to the file BEFORE I burn it to DVD. I'm not sure I can change it later (after I delete the original 'event' -- which I need to do to open up space on my hard drive). But if you or Dick or someone like that has an iPhone, I can send my video projects to you before burning them. Then after I've identified the perpetr... er, performers, I can add the credits and then burn the video to DVD. G |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Videos From: Genie Date: 14 Aug 09 - 12:52 PM I've lost a lot of video over the last year, including about half of what I shot at the 2008 FSGW. (Lost some files early, while I was still getting the hang of editing in iMovie. Lost more when my hard drive died about 6 weeks ago and I had not backed up every video file that I was still working on.) But quite a bit survived these SNAFUs. Some of them are posted online, but with cryptic titles to make it unlikely they'll be viewed much, if at all, without someone sending a link. I'll take them down, of course, if any of the parties involved object. Here's Joe Offer, from the Peace Cabin, about 2 AM on Sunday, Oct. 5. Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 15 Aug 09 - 09:20 PM More from late night in the Peace Cabin.* It's Big Mick singing some song about being stripped bare or something. Barry walks in and joins in the chorus. Big Mick sings in the wee hours *I lost most of the videos I did of the concert Sunday night and most of the Doo Wop workshop in the Peace cabin. Most of what survived both my newbie ineptitude with iMovie and the later death of my hard drive is from Bobert's Blues Band, late nights in the Peace Cabin, and 10 to 12 performances from the Sunday night concert. A few things survived only in "thumbnail" form, which allowed for good audio files but made for only iPhone-size videos. Also there are a few video clips that I won't post publicly unless or until I check with the parties involved, for one reason or another. The ones I'm posting here seem pretty "safe." E.g., the songs are PD (at any rate not worried about violating copyright) and the performances look and sound good, etc.) Still, if anyone objects to something being shared, just let me know. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Amos Date: 15 Aug 09 - 09:50 PM One web-version of the song Mick is singing: Ordinary man I am an ordinary man, nothing special nothing grand, I have to work for everthing I own. As I never asked for a lot, I was happy with with I got, enough to keep my family and my home. Now they say the times are hard, and they've handed me my cards they say there is not to work, to go around but when the whistle blows, the gates will finally close tonight they are going to shut this factory down, then they'll tear it down. I never missed a day or went to strike for better pay, for 20 years I served them the best I could Now with the signing of a check they seem so easy to forget the loyalty through the bad times and through good. Now the owner says it is sad to see that thing have got so bad but the Captains of industry won't let them lose. He still drives a car and smokes a cigar, he still takes his family on a cruise, he'll never lose. Now it seems to me such a cruel irony, he is richer now than ever he was before. Now my check spends and I can't afford the rent, there is one law for the rich one for the poor. Every day I try to salvage) some of my pride, to find some job so I can pay my way, but wherever I go the answer is always no, there is no work for anyone here today, no work today ... An so condemned I stand, just an ordinary man, with thousands beside my in the cue, I watch my darling wife try to make the best of life, but god knows what the kids are going to do now that we are faced with this human waste, a generation cast aside for as long as I live I never will forgive that you stripped me from my dignity an pride, you stripped me bare, you stripped me bare, you stripped me bare. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 16 Aug 09 - 12:39 AM Thanks, Amos. I can put that title on the video now, even if it may not be quite the same version. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: kendall Date: 16 Aug 09 - 08:57 PM The audio is just awful! My guitar sounds like it was being held down and sat upon by an elephant! |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Bill D Date: 16 Aug 09 - 09:10 PM The audio is 'better' if you can download it and play it thru a decent program. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Bill D Date: 16 Aug 09 - 09:22 PM Well! I had gone to the trouble of saving several of these and playing them with VLC-(videolan player but after posting, I discovered that one can just paste in a YouTube address and play it without technically 'saving' it. VLC will play 'most' streaming media, as well as almost ANY audio or video files...(and they keep up with the latest codecs, too!) Kendall...the guitar sounds better this way, but there are limitations in the recording device. At least Jacqui's singing is clear.) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 16 Aug 09 - 09:53 PM I generally got better audio recording in the cabin with no amps being used than I did in the concert. When the sound is amplified and then picked up by the laptop's internal mic from a distance of 10-15 feet, there can be distortion that isn't there when the laptop's just recording an acoustic performance from 5 to 10 feet away. Then there's the issue of which format I use for saving the audio/video file. I can experiment with that some more. In the clip of the song I did at the concert, I could hardly hear my guitar at all. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 16 Aug 09 - 11:22 PM See that My Grave is Kept Clean by Bobert w Leadfingers and I accompanying. Bobert's vocal and guitar are pretty clear on this one, I think. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: kendall Date: 17 Aug 09 - 04:53 AM Yes, that was a big improvement. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 17 Aug 09 - 11:37 AM Of course, Kendall, he was playing through (shudder) an amplifier. |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Bobert Date: 17 Aug 09 - 12:44 PM Wow, didn't know that was being recorded 'er I woulda brushed my hair... No, I woulda gotten hair... B~ |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pictures & videos From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 09 - 02:50 PM I lost most of the videos I took of the Sunday night concert, so I don't have a lot of examples, but I do think a lot of the problem with the guitar sound on your clip, Kendall, had to do with the way the acoustic guitars were miked. The guitar I used (thanks so much, Nancy!) was acoustic and Charlie had to keep adjusting the mic position while I was singing and playing, and it still came across weak and tinny (not typical of Martins) in the video of my song. But when I videod unamplified instruments in the cabin or louder instruments in the concert, the instruments came over better. Everyone's voice was well amplified in the concert, and the voices tended to come over louder than a lot of instruments, including your guitar. Check out this clip of Mick, voice and guitar unapmplied, in the Peace Cabin. All the videos I did were done with the same recording equipment, which was just the built-in camera and mic on my MacBook. Differences in sound quality result from things like how close the mic is to the sound source, whether and how the sound source was amplified, and the acoustics of the room itself. There are tools that will let you tweak sound after you've recorded it, but I don't have anything like that except for a playback volume control and a "normalizing" function (that basically evens out the volume highs and lows). I can't adjust things like bass and treble or add reverb, etc., at least not with iMovie. (One of these days I'll experiment with my Garage Band to see what its gizmos can do.) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 17 Aug 09 - 03:24 PM You did a great job, Genie! |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Amos Date: 17 Aug 09 - 03:52 PM Genie: Get a copy of SoundStudio--it is simple, has all the neat filters and tweakers, and you can get it free for fourteen days. If you delete the prefspane it forgets you already used it for fourteen days and starts over; but it is wworth buying for editing sound. Garage Band also has many filters but it is harder to use them, being a very different tool. You did very well indeed!! That cut of "See That My Grave is Kept Clean" really shows how delicate LEJ can be with that mouth harp, and how pure-dee roadhouse Bobert can get when he lets loose!! And the whistle adds the nicest counterpoint! A |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 09 - 04:50 PM Thanks, LEJ and Amos. I'll check into SoundStudio, not just for these but for the promo videos I use for business. I seldom have the luxury of doing a really thorough input/output sound check when I'm performing or recording someone else, so it'd be really nice to be able to "fix" things like distortion or too much bass after the fact. But to show you how well the li'l ol' MacBook can pick up that harp, the geetars, the dobro, and the vocals without all that tweaking, check out this one more clip from Bobert's Blues Band (clip 4) 2008. Steve's doin' a great job o' improvisin' a Getaway Night Owl Blues. An' the floozettes (including Dani) are in fine feathered form! ; D Genie |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Bill D Date: 17 Aug 09 - 04:54 PM That VLC program lets you do amazing things to both video & sound while playing. Graphic equalizer and more. It can't alter the recording....that is another problem, but it can sure make listening (and color & brightness...etc., better) |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pictures & videos From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 09 - 05:11 PM That would be nice, Bill. But I've often found that even when the sound was great live - guitar and vocals evenly balanced, frequencies adjusted right, volume just right for the room, the recording device (be it my MacBook or someone's video camera or a tape recorder) didn't capture the same sound. That can have a lot to do with things like direct-ins, mic placement in relation to the recording device, etc. For example, in this clip of (mainly) Big Mick singing "Caledonia" , the input device (MacBook) was too close to me and some others in the room and too far away from Mick. So his voice comes over strong, but the guitar doesn't, and some of us singing or whistling along were picked up too well. Same thing happened in the Getaway concert when the audience was singing along. The voices of people sitting near the laptop mic were picked up louder than ideally, relative to the on-stage performer's voice/instrument. Of course, it helps to have separate tracks recorded for the various voices and instruments, but sometimes the convenience of a portable, all-in-one recording system trumps most other considerations. :) |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 09 - 07:35 PM Yeah, Amos, I've been thinking for some time about using an external mic. I think I could rig up rig up one of the mics I already have to use for direct input. I'd just have to use the right kind of adapters. Sometimes having a mic cord lying across the floor and propped up near the performer can pose logistical problems that don't exist when you just have a dig. camera or laptop sitting a few feet or yards away. But I'll look into that mic you suggested. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Micca Date: 17 Aug 09 - 08:44 PM Genie, a lttle trick I have used very effectively this year is having a seperate digital recorder recording in Real Time ,simultaneously with the video shooting, I used a Edirol RO9 and then married the sound to the video in the video editor, if the video sound was Cr*p as it can be. The built in pair of stereo mics on the Edirol are very good, and being digital you can boost the levels and make adjustments before adding to the pictures, it also has the benefit ,of course of allowing amost continuous recording of the "interesting" sound track!!even when you are not videoing. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 09 - 10:36 PM Yeah, Bill, And if you check out the videos you'll see there's a lot more than just blues and doo wop represented. (If I hadn't lost my hard drive there'd have been a bunch more, since I recorded the whole Sunday night concert and some more of the spontaneous music in the Peace Cabin.) ---------------- Interesting suggestions, Micca. (Though I find it's time-consuming enough to deal with the videos without having to sync a separate sound track to the images.) Thing is, I've been pretty happy with the sound quality on most of the videos from the Getaway. The miked acoustic instruments in the concert, such as Kendall's guitar, my guitar, and ClaireBear's dulcimer on her "Buffalo" song, are exceptions. And I have nearly always found that miking an acoustic guitar satisfactorily is difficult in a live performance. It's hard to get it miked loudly enough without risking feedback if I move an inch or two while playing. Oh, and, Amos, you know that last BBB-4 clip, with all the flouncing floozettes, wasn't in the wee hours of the AM. That was Sunday afternoon at about 4PM, if I recall correctly. But THIS one was about 4 AM in the Peace Cabin. (Some people just won't go to bed at a decent hour like normal people!) Amos in Peace Cabin - Derry Down |

People who weren't there missed an absolutely great time. Hope they don't miss another one--though obviously this was completely unique--the perfect combination for great entertainment. Thanks so much for capturing so much of it, Genie. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 17 Aug 09 - 11:32 PM Speaking of memory, mine has faded with regard to the names of some of the people I caught on video. In other cases, I probably never caught the name in the first place. For example, the twins who did such wonderful harmonies and sang that song about someone having too many items in the express checkout lane. Or the guy who led the Doo Wop workshop with Ken Schatz. If you click on any of the video links I've posted where I didn't identify the performer(s) - even here in the Mudcat thread - I'd appreciated it if you could so identify them. (We don't need to identify all the floozettes. Some of us may not want that publicized.) G |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Lonesome EJ Date: 18 Aug 09 - 12:39 AM Hey, Bill D. I do a very mellow version of "Angel Band", too, I'll have you know. Can't always tell a book by its cover and so forth. I can also hold forth on "Leave Her Johnnie, Leave Her" like a fellow who has spent some time before the mast, which have I. And to hear me sing The Old Double Diamond would have you bawlin like a Colby Kansas Dogie. Yessir, if its multifacetedness you are lookin for, I'm your huckleberry. But there was just somethin about the general atmosphere of the Peace Shack that seemed to bring the Devil outta some of us. You try singing "The Northwest Passage" to them scantily-clad hussies! And I'm sure Bobert has his sensitive side too. Maybe. He does bring an amp to the Getaway, which is taking liberties with the overall milieu, IMHO. As for Amos, he can do his own 'splainin. |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Fortunato Date: 26 Aug 09 - 07:14 PM Lonesome EJ I greatly admire the turn of phrase, "I'm your huckleberry". Are you in fact quoting Doc Holiday in "Tombstone"? regards, chance |
Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Amos Date: 26 Aug 09 - 08:06 PM "What it means is easy enough. To be one's huckleberry — usually as the phrase I'm your huckleberry — is to be just the right person for a given job, or a willing executor of some commission. Where it comes from needs a bit more explaining. First a bit of botanical history. When European settlers arrived in the New World, they found several plants that provided small, dark-coloured sweet berries. They reminded them of the English bilberry and similar fruits and they gave them one of the dialect terms they knew for them, hurtleberry, whose origin is unknown (though some say it has something to do with hurt, from the bruised colour of the berries; a related British dialect form is whortleberry). Very early on — at the latest 1670 — this was corrupted to huckleberry. As huckleberries are small, dark and rather insignificant, in the early part of the nineteenth century the word became a synonym for something humble or minor, or a tiny amount. An example from 1832: "He was within a huckleberry of being smothered to death". Later on it came to mean somebody inconsequential. Mark Twain borrowed some aspects of these ideas to name his famous character, Huckleberry Finn. His idea, as he told an interviewer in 1895, was to establish that he was a boy "of lower extraction or degree" than Tom Sawyer. Also around the 1830s, we see the same idea of something small being elaborated and bombasted in the way so typical of the period to make the comparison a huckleberry to a persimmon, the persimmon being so much larger that it immediately establishes the image of something tiny against something substantial. There's also a huckleberry over one's persimmon, something just a little bit beyond one's reach or abilities; an example is in David Crockett: His Life and Adventures by John S C Abbott, of 1874: "This was a hard business on me, for I could just barely write my own name. But to do this, and write the warrants too, was at least a huckleberry over my persimmon". Quite how I'm your huckleberry came out of all that with the sense of the man for the job isn't obvious. It seems that the word came to be given as a mark of affection or comradeship to one's partner or sidekick. There is often an identification of oneself as a willing helper or assistant about it, as here in True to Himself, by Edward Stratemeyer, dated 1900: " 'I will pay you for whatever you do for me.' 'Then I'm your huckleberry. Who are you and what do you want to know?' ". Despite the obvious associations, it doesn't seem to derive directly from Mark Twain's books." ANd here just for spice are some deathless excerpts from "Tombstone", 1993 version: What do you want Wyatt? Wyatt Earp: Just to live a normal life. Doc Holliday: There is no normal life, Wyatt, there's just life, ya live it. Wyatt Earp: I don't know how. Doc Holliday: Sure ya do, say goodbye to me, go grab that spirited actress and make her your own. Take that spirit from her and don't look back. Live every second, live right on through to the end. Live Wyatt, live for me. Wyatt, if you were ever my friend... if ya ever had even the slightest of feelin' for me, leave now, leave now... please. Wyatt Earp: Thanks for always being there, Doc. ... Doc Holliday: It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds. .... Doc Holliday: I'm your huckleberry... More great lines here. A |

Subject: RE: FSGW 2008 Getaway Pix & videos From: Genie Date: 27 Aug 09 - 05:31 PM To make it easier to find the videos from the 2008 Getaway, I have tagged all of them with the key term "FSGW." If you type "FSGW" in the YouTube search box, you should see a list of all of them. For reasons I don't understand (YouTube's "search" function leaves a lot to be desired), there are other a few videos that also come up (one, apparently, some sort of lesbian sex video, judging by the thumbnail) that have nothing to do with FSGW. But if you look through the pages that come up (about 30 videos in all) you should find all the ones I posted from the 2008 Getaway. There are a few other videos from earlier FSGW happenings that will also come up, which is cool. |
