How could I possibly turn down such an offer?

It wasn't until I read "Generations" (a great book on gendered patterns of inheritance that concentrated on what mothers passed to their daughters, and why) that I realised why my mother, a seriously great seamstress and knitter, had always refused to let me anywhere near her Singer. I tried to learn on the machine at Mawson (where we used to make dog harnesses from lamp wicking) but kept breaking needles. SIgh!

I joined after the thread had died and before Sandra did a Lazarus on it. I was from Melbourne before I became a New Englander (the "other" New England, centred on 31°30'S, 151°30'E). I started off singing a bit and like unaccompanied harmony (as it used to be called) but got waylaid by a lagerphone and then seduced by the leather ferret. It's what I mainly play these days but I'll use melodeons for old time dances and mouth organs for special accompaniments. Having inherited a fiddle and a banjo I'll have a try at them. Daughter #1 (who has just finished high school) is into piano, although ukelele has sidetracked her a bit, and Daughter #2 is a demon on most sizes of recorder. They've both ripped much of my CD collection (which is rather eclectic) and, when I retrieve the turntable from storage, I guess they'll rip the vinyl (even more eclectic) as well. One day I might be able to get one (or both) of them to teach me how to read and (introducing a completely nonmusical touch) to use a sewing machine.

Me and my daughter, Tutti Flutey hail from a village about 35 miles north of the "roman" city of Lincoln in England. We both play in the Rosianna Ceilidh Band with Old Grisly and Banjo Flower and a couple of non-catters. We mostly play English country dance music, with a splash of Irish, Scottish and American. Some of it trad and some contemporary.

I also live in NYC - was born in New Brunswick, Canada, grew up in Ontario, moved to North Carolina at 14 and bounced around the county abit, acting and things until I landed in New York. I ran into Lorcan (InOBU) at Quaker meeting, and started singing with him- he pointed me here when I was looking for some lyrics.

As for me, I'm 21, (nearly 22!) and sing, though I'm learning other noisemakers on the sly when my roommates aren't home.

You all seem like a lively bunch, and I'm glad to be here!

I hail from Altrincham in Cheshire, and found Mudcat when an old pal from our Malt Shovels days told Sheila about it. Since then I've been addicted.
I don't play an instrument, but used to be what I called an unaccomplished singer, mostly funny stuff, I still write parodies, but occasionally something deadly serious as a contrast, the clown always wants to play Hamlet!
Love the site, and find the people great fun. Nice to find out where I'm talking too.

Although not a mudcatter yet am going to make it a high/Hi priority in my life. I was turned on to this sight by a very groovin happening Rustic Rebel. Thanks Rustic Rebel. And if time makes you rustic than im antique. But back to the question at hand i live in a small town some 20 miles south of Itasca state Park. Home of the mouth of the Mississippi river where one can step across it. In a hole in the wall apartment in the low rent district. No Picture window to watch the birds eat seed. Greetings: I am formerly from Northeastern Pennsylvania, but now reside in Florida. Because of all the hurricanes, it has been renamed the "Plywood State." I play guitar and am always looking for guitar chords for various songs. Finding lyrics is easy, however, guitar chords is next to impossible. Sure do hope some of the great folks at Mudcat can help me out.

Only been on here a few months...so i guess that makes me pretty much a 'new' member. Like a few on here i come from Hull, moved here when i was five, but i definately don't intend to spend my life here!

   Started doing abit of folk singin about 2 years ago, did my first solo about 5/6 months ago. And god it was scary! Just started learnin guitar, pretty much just to accompany myself. But once i can do that i'm goin to start learnin some of the well known tunes around the sessions i go to so i can join in...instead of just sitting there!!

I think i may also be the youngest catter (16) ...maybe???

Nice thread. I'm from London, moved to Hertford a bit over twenty years ago and now consider it home.

I've tried playing guitar, with no real success to date but sing regularly, mostly traditional English folk, at a Hertford venue and any other I can find and manage to get to. A friend tells me I'm an addict and I think he's right as far as both the music and the 'Cat are concerned. That's the trouble when you're a late convert!

Oh yes, the weather is lovely now, reasonably hot days and cool nights. It's a bit cloudy tonight so can't see Mars in all its glory at the moment, but that has been rather good to watch.

I'm new on this thread, but I've been a mad mudcatter since late last year, when I first got my computer. Now I do like Sandra, and log on every night, no matter how late I get home. If mudcat is down I feel quite bereft. Sad, isn't it. However it is working now, so I feel quite eft, thank you.

BTW, I run a folk club in Sydney, like Sandra. We help each other out a lot.

I've spent so much time on the 'Cat reading threads form end to end daily, and contributing a few songs to the challenges, that it seems like an awfully long time, but I joined only a few months ago after a very brief trial 'guesthood'.

I'm in Westchester County, NY -- the PO says we're in Bronxville, we 're closest to Tuckahoe, but the tax man says we're in Yonkers ("Next to the Greatest City in the World").

I've been plinking at a guitar forever, on a banjo almost as long, and squeeking on a tin whistle for a while -- and all without any signs of progress or self-confidence enough to go out in public. But I'm not shy about singing out, in groups or alone unaccompanied, and will tonight at the Pinewoods FC Riverdale Sing. I may take along the Jew's Harp that I resurrected from the back of a drawer, to see how tolerant they are.

I think for the moment I will persevere so if you have any tips would be gratefully received. I think you would be dissapointed with it anyway, it's only a Parrot (I don't think its sick.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a c/g melodeon which I have absolutely no idea what to do with but I have made it scream Speed bonny boat and Jock o@ Hazledean (and I mean scream). I don@t have a cookie cause I religiously scan Mudcat from work, where due to our educational filtering every time a thread gets a naughty word the remainder of the thread gets FORBIDDEN. But I persevere. I keep meaning to join but my home computer is broke and awaiting parts under warranty. I think this means it takes longer as no money is involved.

Heavily 'into' American Old Time, playing mandolin (tunes not chops) and a bit of guitar. Have been known to try singing and would learn fiddle but the (feline) cats object! The 'Missus' clogs - Green Grass style. Involved with FOAOTMAD (Friends Of American Old Time Music And Dance) a mainly UK organisation, growing slowly but steadily. Hey, fellow Catters! Pretty new myself. Been singin' since I can remember with my Papa and playing Guitar since I was 18, but sadly haven't put much into it to learn more than the basics. My Papa made me a lap dulcimer and I have been looking for someone to help teach me to play it right. In the California Bay Area right now. Just about ready to go to my first Folk Meeting held at the local coffe house on Thursday nights (tomorrow is my first!) Glad to see so many of you around...and hey, check out Womanly Jiggles: what's the verdict? It's a pretty interesting thread...started by none other. :-) (nothing like a little self promotion, eh?)

I'm fairly new, and live in South Carolina. Love the blues and folk music, grew up listening to my Dad's collection. Play a pretty mean harmonica, and am getting better at guitar. My master plan is to retire and take up busking on a street corner someplace warm. We shall see! LOL

Seeing some of the earlier messages from people who'd been here only a few weeks I thought I'd been aroud far too long to qualify as new - then I noticed the thread started in February !!!

So...
I'm near Cambridge (UK) actually even nearer to Newmarket and play Anglo concertina, cello, melodeon and (a bit) pipes.

I don't really subscribe to the Mudcat culture of hiding behind a nickname, but surprisingly (a) my name's really Anahata and (b) there's another Anahata on mudcat so I had to call myself something else.

I'm not a performer, but I add my voice to any chorus going. I've listened to recorded folk music since the 70's, but only discovered live music 6 years ago - & now I run a folk club, with a lot of help. I obsessively collect CD's, attend what Festivals, clubs & sessions I can get to on public transport, or by cadging rides from friends, & count some very talented singers, songwriters & musicians as friends. What a wonderful life, what did I do before I discovered the folk world?

And I obsessively log into Mudcat every night (no matter how late I get home) & I love it, its a wonderful community.

Well I guess I ought to do the formal thing too...

I'm in Edinburgh. I'm 24 and have always been into trad music, having been fed liberal amounts of it by my guitar-playing (and singing) parents. It obviously worked as all 3 of us kids grew up musical. I mainly play the Scottish small pipes and border pipes, but also whistles, cittern, fiddle, bodhran... etc with varying degrees of ability. I used to sing quite a bit but have fallen out of it recently. If there were 48 hours in a day it wouldn't be enough time to play music in. I keep having to stop myself from buying more instruments. But I WILL learn the highland pipes soon... sorry neighbours... :-)

My boss gives me funny looks when I tell him I've been at a session and tells me off for drinking in 'old men's pubs'.

I like old men's pubs...

Hey - I'm another Ohioan, born and bred in Cleveland, now in Newbury, a bit to the East. I also read and post from work, not hooked up at home, which is also why I post mostly as a guest, though I am registered, and sign my name so people can know where it's coming from. I am a lifelong music fan, played mostly drums for a while, than flute, bagpipe chanter, would like to get a set of uilleann pipes someday, picked up a few ukuleles that I tormented friends and family with, now am struggling as well with the Mandolin, picked up a real sweet 'B & J Serenader' in it's original case for 20 bucks, a set of new strings and it sounds great (unless I'm abusing it with tired bleeding fingers!). Am mostly these days interested in celtic, but love trad. music of all kinds, have had a world music radio show in the past, and folk show and celtic show, and blues show, and jazz show, and hope to do more celtic radio in the future, big record collection, select cd collection, lots of books, really try to get at the history of songs and thier singers. I detest the music of most contemporary 'singer-songwriters' though not all of them. And love to sing. I am trying in my own way to encourage everyone to sing in public more often, and learn the old songs.

I live on the Welsh English border where Offas Dyke crosses, Im a family doctor, and have played and sung for 36 years at least. Now with a bit of free time I'm in a folkorchestra, and an English ceidlh band, There seem to be quite a few local catters in Shropshire, and here in the sticks we make our own amusement. Never had it so good. Play anything I can lay my hands on!
