Subject: RE: Where do Mudcatters live? From: Frank in the swamps Date: 11 Jan 99 - 04:34 AM Various places in Central Florida for nearly twenty years. Folks, you wouldn't believe the population growth down here, a friend and I once narrowly dodged a forest fire while out in the boonies, went walkin' through the burned out area while the trees were still smokin'. That area is now suburban for miles around. Places I used to camp are fenced, places I fished are filled with jet skis and power boats. Almost bought a piece of land about twenty miles from the coast, was warned by a well driller they were getting saltwater intrusion, we're sucking that much water out of the ground. I believe it was J.F.urged us not to move to New Mexico,He must have seen something like this. A paradise pissed away. Most of the finest places I've seen in this region are now covered with real estate signs. Or luxury golf developements. Frank in the dwindling swamps. |

Subject: RE: Where do Mudcatters live? From: Westminster, Maryland Date: 12 Jan 99 - 08:47 PM Just about 30 miles north and east of Baltimore (see I lie in my signature, but who's heard of Westminster) I was born and raised here. Thanks to Uncle Sam's Army I have seen a little more of the world. We used to be cow country, but now we are mostly suburbs. It still feels like home, because its the only one I've known. I've come to realize though that I am a misfit here, I think too liberally to be a part of it all, but I love the many salt of the earth people who still live here (even if they are conservatives). This change that Frank, Frank and I have talked about (open spaces going to pot) is a common folk music theme. Think I'll start a thread. Roger in Baltimore (which is near Westminster) |

Subject: RE: Where do Mudcatters live? From: katlaughing Date: 13 Jan 99 - 02:10 AM To the Cat who posted from Northwestern CT: are you familiar with Granville, MA, which is just across the border from Enfield, in the Berkshires? When I moved form Wyoming to New England, we spent our first year there. Then, after living in Northampton, MA for a few years, we lived in Mystic, CT, until we moved back to Wyoming, which HEY GUYS, is far from ever being over-developed. We've got so much wide open prairie, you'd think we had a planet of our own! But I do miss New England, still have a daughter in Groton, CT. Eastern Colorado and even the Western slope, both homes of my ancestors, are going the way of the swamps and it is utterly disgusting and heartbreaking to see. |

Subject: RE: Where do Mudcatters live? From: Den Date: 21 Mar 99 - 04:54 PM I was born where the mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea. Moved to Belfast, lived there during the seventies in the markets. Moved to Canada with a band called Flash. Who were quite well known in the late seventies in Ireland atleast. Played the Blarney Stone for six weeks and decided to stay in Vancouver. Lived there and in the Fraser Valley for sixteen years. Now live in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, a great place to bring up kids. This might sound a little contrived but when I read about other Mudcaters its really interesting to learn about where you are in the world and where you came from and that we all share something. For me its interesting to hear from other people from Ireland and people from BC in Canada and people from my new home in Nova Scotia. Anyway thanks for listening. |

Subject: RE: Where do Mudcatters live? From: JamesJimFolk Date: 16 Dec 99 - 11:08 PM Hey, Mary! Good to see someone else from Kentucky responding. I didn't think there would be anyone out there who would really recognize where Lyndon was/is. Bardstown's a great city - I'm sure a big improvement over Louisville/Lyndon. My lovely wife, Teresa and myself live in a new area of Lyndon (well, it's about 10 years old)and we like the location (close to shopping, etc. - could be good/ could be bad). When you lived here, did you know any of the folkies around and about? Janey Robertson? Ronnie Dee? Kenny Pyle? Ed Adams? Bob Rosenthall?. Any names in particular or those with whom you may have played/performed? What are you up to now? Any folkies down your way? I know a few people in Bardstown, but none that are musicians. We have a couple of "Hoots" a year in Louisville (Memorial Day Sunday and Labor Day Sunday). Everyone is welcome! Jim |

Hope you are playing an instrument or have designs to do so. I have not been, but understand there's a good folk week in Bardstown in late July, early August (every year). Also, Ky. Subject: RE: Where do Mudcatters live? From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 17 Dec 99 - 07:55 PM JamesJimFolk-most of my music is listening and discovering new tunes these days. The Internet has opened a whole new venue for me to explore. In the last year I've discovered many new Scottish and Appalachian tunes. I just recently heard about the Iroquois Park festival. The one in Bardstown got cancelled, probably due to commercialism, etc. There is a real wealth of knowledge and resources right in this community, and I'm surprised nearly everyday that people I've known for years are so in touch with so much of the history of this entire region...and there are Irish music nuts like me everywhere. I'll send a personal note with more details. And Skarpi---I have a very good feelings about people from Iceland. Friends of ours were there in the Air Force and said all the men there looked like my husband (blond, blue eyes, a little stout)...said they were descended from Vikings or something. ;-) Mary |
