Subject: LYRICS for 'La Raspa'
From: JW
Date: 17 Apr 99 - 07:04 PM

To whom this may concern,

I am looking for the lyrics to the song "La Raspa". I would like to use it in my classroom to sing with my students. But I have been unable to find a copy of the lyrics anywhere. Please let me know if you know where I can get a copy of the lyrics. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks, JW

Refresh. Several web sites say LA RASPA is the correct name for THE MEXICAN HAT DANCE.

If there are any lyrics, they are not used in Mexico.
Simplified dance instructions are here: La Raspa
Sound is here: La Raspa wav

You might try e-mailing Cathy Fink at

info@cathymarcy.com

She is a nice gal whom I have met a few times, and she does the song. I expect she'd be more than willing to share the lyrics.

Lyrics (from here)

Que salgan a bailar
las gentes de este lugar,
la raspa con su son
será vuestra diversión.

De frente se dan tres
y luego tres de costado,
de frente otra vez
y tres mas del otro lado.

Dame el brazo para rodar
y ahora el otro para cambiar
salta y brinca siempre al compás
que la raspa ya es algo más.
Dame el brazo para rodar
y ahora el otro para cambiar
salta y brinca siempre al compás
que la raspa ya es algo más.

Si tú me quieres y yo te quiero
ya nos podemos los dos casar
y cuando vuelvan las golondrinas
ya viviremos en nuestro hogar.

Una casita muy chiquitita
con muchas flores en el jardín,
allí juntitos nos amaremos
y nuestra dicha no tendrá fin.
(Repite todo desde el principio)

I wonder who composed those lyrics.
La raspa is danced in New Mexico, and I have seen Mexican troupes dance it, but lyrics are new to me. It seems to me it would be difficult to match the dance movements to those lyrics. Or is there different music to those lyrics?

The above is close to the way we were taught in New Mexico. Notice the bored expressions- that I remember too.
