Corridos!! The passionate, history-rich ballads of the world as they are sung by the vivid voices of MExico, Central and South America, los mariachis and las Tejanas and the wide, wide spectrum of colors and voices in between Chile and Canada.

There are thousands of them, from the stately ballads of lost love in a horse-drawn era to the rich and violent tales of border smuggler shoot-outs with the D.E.A. in a cold dawn along the back roads of the desert passes where Arizona blends into MExico. Thousands -- named for names, named for nations, named for Jalisco, Durango and Morales and heros and heroines down the centuries. And they are still being written. If you go to Apple's iTunes store and search for "corrido" you will come up with a few hundred, just those available through the store.

The richness and variety and breadth of these songs defies description and surpasses many of our own vaunted collections for quantity and, within their own musical framework, quality.

I am looking for one particular one, called "Yo Soy El Corrido" (I am the Ballad) which I heard last night at a theatrical presentation called "Corridos Remix". I can't recommend the show enough.

If anyone has the lyrics or an MP3 of "Yo Soy El Corrido" I would be grateful.

Meanwhile, I offer this thread as a general discussion area for a topic we have slighted too long here on the Cat.

Amosq

Sorry. The above post was me, too.

I'm interested, but would like to mention that it's impossible to "slight" something I never heard of.

I've done a little surfing.

If anybody knows where to find a MIDI or PDF of an early corrido, I would like to hear about it. My early-music gang would love a piece from the New World, the older, the better.

Muchas gracias.

"Yo Soy el Corrido" was composed by Pepe Guizar, well-known Mexican composer of popular songs. He has copyright on 129 songs currently and is represented by APRS (Mexico), through BMI.

I like the way Linda Ronstadt did it on "Canciónes de mi Padre," still available as a video. I dig it out periodically and enjoy.
The dvd of the same name has been released by Warnervision. Both should be available from your friendly Amazon.

The site recommended by Amos is a good place to start. Lyrics to Two Mexican Revolution corridos are here: Adelita Click on 'porteado' at the base to get a little history from a California viewpoint.
An excellent little book is "Corridos mexicanos," by Vicente T. Mendoza, 1985 (and reprints?), Lecturas mexicanas no. 71, published by Cultura SEP (Secretaria de Education Publica). Music is given for a number of them.

Tucson, Arizona, folklorist James G 'Big Jim' Griffith compiled a CD: Heroes & Horses, Corridos from the Arizona-Sonora Borderlands, published by Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. I wrote a review published at Musical Traditions. As I said there, otherwise, I'm generally ignorant -- but Big Jim is a friend whose introduction to the form I trusted.

I see that the link from there to Smithsonian Folkways doesn't work any more -- when the album came out, the full notes were available online. Track samples and brief notes are now available here.

Oh, and, of course, the Ronstadt family are familiar singers in Tucson... Here's more from Jim Griffith about that.

"Yo Soy El Corrido" is on the Linda Ronstadt DVD titled Canciones de mi Padre. It's not on the CD, unfortunately.

You'll find a video of the song here (click). I highly recommend the DVD. This is good stuff.

YO SOY EL CORRIDO
(Songwriter: ?)

Yo soy el corrido
canto alegrias
tragedias y penas;
amigo de amigos
soy azote de mis enemigos

Yo soy el corrido
voy a las ferias
y a todas las fiestas
Soy enamorado
pero sobre todo muy atravesado
cuando ando tomado

Soy el alma de mi pueblo
y es mi voz la de la calle
hallame donde me halle,
yo soy el corrido
que canta tragedias y melancolias,
tambien alegrias

words from La Revolucion mexicana a traves de los corridos populares, Vol I, 48-49

The terrible "disappearance" of 43 students in the Mexican state of Guerrero this fall has inspired the composition of corridos on the issue. A good article and 4 examples, here: Watch 4 Protest Corridos Dedicated To Mexico's Missing Students.
