The song "Amapola" was popular, in English, in the 1940s, but it also has Spanish lyrics:

Amapola      W:Albert Gamse  ;M:Joseph M. Lacalle © 1924

No seas tan ingrata y ámame.
Amapola, Amapola,
Cómo puedes tú vivir tan sola,

The English lyrics (below) were popular in WWII in the US.

Amapola, my pretty little poppy,
You're like the lovely flower so sweet & heavenly.
Since I found you my heart is wrapped around you
And, seeing you, it seems to beat a rhapsody.
Amapola, the pretty little poppy
Must copy its endearing charms from you.
Amapola, Amapola,
How I long to hear you say, "I love you."

----

My question is how old are the Spanish lyrics? Were they also written in the 1920s, or was this an older Spanish song that was turned into a popular English-lyric song in the 20th C. Any background info?

See this site, though not all is answered:

Amapola -- My Pretty Little Poppy ["This page is dedicated to my great grandfather Joseph M. LaCalle (the writer of the music for Amapola) and to my mother, his biggest fan."]

Masato, you're amazing! How do you find all the stuff nobody else can dig up? I'm in awe.

SharonA, it was a very simple procedure. Putting "Joseph M. Lacalle" and "Amapola" into Google's search box. See the results. That site is on the top.

Spanish lyrics & music were by LaCalle in 1924, English lyrics were by Albert Gamse in 1941, recorded by Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Vocalist Helen O'Connell

Sad to say, the link you posted, Masato, no longer works. I wonder if the information can be found at a new site.
