I hope this doesn't sound like an anti-women rant. It's more along the lines of a Venus/Mars observation.

We recently moved from Texas to Georgia. When I was packing up stuff from our bathroom I was astounded to see how many bottles and tubes of body lotion and hand cream that one woman can collect. There must have been gallons of the stuff. When I pointed this out to my dear wife I received a blank stare. Her reply was along the lines of - Well we need all of that. And it turns out that she can remember which of her friends gave her which tube or jar and what the occasion was. It sounds like if women have to give a present to another woman the very first thing they think of is body lotion or hand cream.

Are y'all really that dry? I'll bet that if any of the men here have any products along that line that they have one jar of "stuff". And they'll use it until it's gone and then replace it with one more jar of the very same "stuff". And they will NOT own five jars of the identical lotion in five different scents. Am I right?

And lets not even mention something called "bath salts". Is that anything like Mr Bubble?

I have three bottles of lotion. One in my kitchen, one in one of our bathrooms, and one in my purse. I have them in two locations in the house for convenience, and the one in my purse is so I can use it when I'm not at home. They're all the same kind of lotion.

My guess about your wife's many lotions has to do with the variety of scents they probably have, along with possibly a different function some of them have (exfoliating, night lotion, hand lotion, foot lotion, etc.). Some women like having a lot of different scents around.

But to answer your question, yes, sometimes our skin gets very dry. Mine gets so dry, it cracks open and bleeds.

I agree with Carol, if you're working around the house and yard a lot, into water, etc, it's a real challenge to keep the skin from that cracking and bleeding stage. I've tried a lot of different lotions and ointments this fall to try to head off the dry skin. I have the ones that seem to work best by the bedside, some in the kitchen, and some in my shoulder pack.

I've got one kind for my face and one for the rest of me. Both in the bathroom. Our house is small. I can't tolerate a lot of scents and have to have a non-comedogetic type (means it doesn't clog pores.) Here, in the high desert, I get so dry my skin can crack and bleed, too. Rog, nor I, can remember my having to use so much lotion in CT and MA, so I think the humidity helped, except from what Sins and Carol wrote that wouldn't be so. So, maybe it's just me.:-) I also don't take baths out here which may contribute to being dry. A good long soak in a tub hydrates the skin.

My mom used to have a few as we kids and dad would give them to her as gifts. She also bought from the Avon lady...what fun that was. I always got a teeny-tiny sample tube of lipstick when she called. I love those scents because they bring mom to mind.

Well, not all men are all that self-denying. I like to have several different shampoos on the shower shelf to alternate, & 2 or 3 different sort of shower-gels {Lynx & such} & hand-wash dispensers; & not getting all that much use out of my 3 different aftershaves since I grew this beard 3 months ago, but nice to have them there for the 2ce weekly cheek-scrape ---

I try to remember to use hand lotion in winter, but often forget until my hands are already cracking and sore. No body lotion, but I do switch to a moisturing body wash in winter. In both instances I buy the cheapist product on the store shelf.

Well of course men use moisturizer if they need it. I live in freezing temps 4 to 5 months of the year and the RH gets very low because of the cold. Dry and sometimes cracked skin affects most everyone. So, after I became a free man again about ten years ago, I had to get some. But I only have one. It's still at least 3/4 full. 850ml on sale for $7. Must be the grease, WD40...

I have fragrance free at work, 3-4 lightly scented at home and a travel size in my bag. I absolutely hate the feeling of dry hands and live in northern New England. It gets bad, especially this time of year.
My former B-I-L once described the dryness of his hands as "being able to pick up a sweater without closing my fingers". Ick.

I hate the scents they use in cosmetic products, so I use a kind that isn't scented, and is as free of industrial chemicals as possible. It's the only kind that doesn't cause my skin more problems than it solves.

The best solution I have ever found for keeping my skin healthy, though, was to spin yarn using wool with the lanolin still in it. During the times when I was doing that, my hands were the smoothest and most crack-free they've ever been since I was a child.

I too have bottles and tubes around- I'm not sure why so many because only a few of them are favorites.

However, I am a part time 'lunch lady' at two small local schools and I do a lot of wash up. I use gloves- but they are the small thin sanitary type, not elbow length ones, and my hands get soaked.

So, a month ago I had to update my fingerprints (Why does anyone need more than one set?) and the tech said that the prints will probably be rejected and I will have to do them over because my hands are so dry. Despite all the slathering I do.

Wesley, I think you're onto something. I too have seen a lot of the stuff around, but I never got around to counting them until just now.

I found 6 bottles or tubes in the bathroom, 4 in the bedroom, and 1 in the kitchen. And those are just the ones sitting out in plain sight. I have a hunch if I started poking around in drawers and closets and her many suitcases, backpacks, and tote bags, I'd find more.

I do use the stuff occasionally, but I never bought any, and I don't have any I can call my own. If I need it, I just use some of my wife's. I don't care which brand; I just take whatever is most convenient.

I used to watch the TV show "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." I actually thought some of their tips on clothing, home decorating, and cooking were pretty good. But when they got around to "grooming" and started pushing the moisturizers and so on, I was repulsed. NO WAY am I going to start putting stuff on my face, I thought. That is just TOO GAY.

Well, I am no longer so adamant. Maybe it has something to do with getting older. In the last year or 2, I have noticed the skin on my forehead getting a little scaly. Then I have a tendency to scratch it. Then it gets sore and noticeably red. A little lotion tends to prevent this.

Heaven help me if I ever start comparing brands.

Each lotion has a different look, smell, memory, and feel. It's a mood thing, and do not EVER mess with a woman's sense of skin care. We live through our skin. If it gets tough, so do we!

What a great thread to ask my question.

My skin is drying up so bad in the last few years. I need a moisturizer for my face that does not cause spots (zits in American).

Most lotions and creams make me feel as though I am suffocating.

Lanolin gives me eczema and any creams with sulphur give me asthma reaction, big time.

I have tried, cocoa butter and jojoba. No good, I get zits.

Help.

I use a store brand of lotion to keep my fingertips from cracking. I also put it on my feet to prevent calluses, and on a some little rough spots on my temple & elbow, FWIW (probably not much). The bottle has lasted probably 10 years.

Other goop: I use Palmolive dish detergent (recommended by Chemical & Engineering News) for my skin as well. I have antibiotic salve to prevent ear infections, and hydrocortisone to prevent ear dermatitis, and pink stuff to keep my partial denture attached. Next to my bed I have several kinds of lubricant in case I ever get laid again.

I use Kiss My Face moisturizer with vitamins A & E, which I water down quite a bit if I use it on my face (which I don't do very often). No zits so far, but others' mileage may vary.

if you have unopened ones, people suggest giving them to foodbanks or homeless shelters etc. as people can't afford them..and they could always pass them on as gifts. Wipe them off first and they'll look nongrimey. mg

The answer is simple:

Women buy the latest products to keep their skin at optimim moisture content so that men don't get too much grief for buying the latest gadgets to put in their guitar cases to keep their guitars at optimim moisture content.

I think 'Kiss My Arse' lotion would be bought by the gallon, by hopeful men.. :0)

I have Angel Cream and Rose Cream and Mandarin Cream and Norweigan Fisherman's Cream (eh?)...Marshmallow Cream that has beautiful memories..and some of the best cream I've ever come across...called:

Elizabeth Arden '8 Hour Rescue Cream'

...which ***everyone*** should keep in their First Aid Box...

I discovered it after burning my fingers sooooo badly when I was handed a boiling hot plate at a self service counter. The lady serving the food was on a slightly higher floor than me, so the plate tipped down towards me and my fingers took the full weight of it..and the full heat! OUCH!

I dropped the plate immediately, and instantly two HUGE blisters appeared on the inside of my two middle fingers.....I seemed to go into shockk too, as I suddenly started crying (sooo embarrassing)...They stuck my hand into ice straight away, but were more concerned about filling in the Accident Form than anything else.

I left shortly afterwards, and went down through the department store. On the way out, in the make-up department, one of the girls noticed the tears, yes, they were still flowing......and she took me to see the guy in charge of her department. He stared at my fingers, and frowned, angry that I'd been let go with no real first aid...then he disappeared and came back with the Eight Hour Rescue Cream, extolling its virtues. He dabbed a little on my good hand, then told me to gently rub it in to the blisters...(he wasn't allowed to touch me, of course, stooopid rule that one is!)

Within minutes the pain stopped....and it had been the most intense throbbing pain you could imagine. By the time I got home to Sidmouth, the blisters had disappeared...and next morning, there was no sign at all on my fingers that anything had happened. I was astounded!

Elizabeth Arden originally used it for her horses, on their legs, if they got sore patches...and yes, it does smell like horse linament, but it's absolute MAGIC!

The other day, I burnt my finger badly again...and I ran to get it...and the same thing happened...out went the pain, down went the redness, and next morning, nothing!...Amazing stuff!

VTam, look for "non-comedogetic" on the label of anything you buy. The dermatologist told me about that one. It literally means it will noc clog pores and cause zits.

I am allergic to wool and lanolin, so I avoid those, too. I use Aveeno Daily Moisturizing on my face and the store brand of Cetaphil lotion on my bod. I see by this LIST there are several Aveeno products our local store does not carry. I may ask for some samples from that site. They offer free ones.

The swim team at Smith College uses Bag Balm aka udder cream, BUT it has lanolin and clogs pores. It's good for an intense treatment for cracked hands.

VT,

I don't know if you can get it in Great Britain, but Slippery Elm (ulmus rubra) root bark is very good for chronically dry skin - at least chewing strips of the rootbark is. I used it for years until my divorce from my herbalist/wildcrafter spouse, when I no longer had ready access to the bark, which we harvested and sold. Strips of the rootbark that we gathered ourselves is all I have ever used (and I used it nearly daily for years.) If you can get it, it will probably be in powder or capsule form, and I don't know if they would be as effective. for one thing, there is no way to know if you are getting only the inner bark of the root, or are getting the wood itself, or the inner tree bark (vs root bark), if you are buying it in capsule or powder form from a large distributor.

Might be worth trying it out.

I learned about this product in massage school, and it is hands down the best body moisturizer I've found - okay to use it on your face too. Neutrogena Body Oil. It's pure sesame oil, and you can get it with a light fragrance (which is very nice) or fragrance free. The Equate brand and some of the store brands I've tried seem pretty much the same, and are cheaper - just make sure it's sesame oil. It goes on very light and is quickly absorbed. I pour mine into a small spray bottle and lightly spray it all over me just after showering, while my skin is still damp. I love it. Just be careful if you spray - if it gets on the floor it'll be slippery.

I can explain all those little bottles of lotions scattered hither and yon in drawers, toiletry kits and suitcases.

I have them too-compliments of young nephews, sons and neices, co-workers who draw names for Xmas parties with $3.00 limits, neighbors you have helped out, the occasional client, or a co-worker you have mentored and who feel the need to express their thanks occasionally with a small gift, not to mention the sample bottles of lotions, shampoos and conditioners collected from hotel stays.

I appreciate the thought, and tend to think I might need them or use them sometime, tuck them away in a drawer, a "miscellaneous" box in the bathroom closet, or drop them in my purse. 4 or 10 years later I stumble across a stash and toss them. (That is not to say that many women {or men} might would really use them over time.)

I thought of this thread with a smile this evening when someone presented me with a little Bath & Body Works packaged gift box containing three 2oz bottles of differently scented body lotion. I was also thrilled! I don't carry hand lotion with me and my hands were dry and hurting, particularly the tips of my fingers at the top of the cuticles where the cracking and bleeding starts. I immediately opened one of the bottles and applied the lotion. Dropped it down in my purse, and stashed another bottle in the glove box. Very handy, except that I will most likely forget I did so.

i remember the process of putting lotion on before bed then wearing gloves to keep it from rubbing off (what keeps it from rubbing off on the gloves?)

i have gotten kiss my face by the gallon...
and also have used Aveeno.

and spinning in the grease is also a great way to treat your hands to a layer of lanolin.

these days with the recommended hand washing for flu prevention
and the prevalence of alcohol based hand sanitizers, there is more
need for moisturizers.

as a sort of bonding ritual, for my daughter's wedding, a bunch of
us...her brides maids and others, went for pedicures...which included lotion...ahh...what a luxury!!

we could write another chapter on lip balm, chap stick, and remember that Lip Ivo? and that does not even include lip coloring stuff, just moitening...mostly oils and bees waxes i think...i avoid petroleum ones..i have to keep a tube in my pocket, purse, vehicle, gear bag, and sometimes guitar case (in a zip lock bag so as to not melt onto instrument)

I'm curious why you would even complain about women using lotion. Seems like you would enjoy a nice smell and soft skin.

Hands in water cleaning stuff, washing hands because it's part of a job or house cleaning, cold weather, lots of reasons skin gets dry. I don't need to buy lotion... I stay in hotels a lot, have all those little complimentary bottles.

I use "Udder Cream" for my hands after a session of quilting, it's great stuff. Quilt shops sell it but I have seen it in other places too. At least - I will when I can get back to quilting, my mending broken arm isn't quite there yet.

Most of my working life was spent in libraries, there nothing like all that book dust and grime to dry out the skin on one's hands, then of course we were often washing our hands because of the aforementioned dust and grime too. Every one of us had a bottle of lotion on our desks and some even had a spare in their desk drawer.

We keep a container or two of naturally dispensible aloe vera for emergencies.

Our original "set" came from an old Indian Shaman Army Nurse who brought it to festivals as the primary component of his medical kit, and was kind enough to give us a starter nearly 20 years ago.

We had some difficulty getting it well established until we learned the specific and very demanding requirements for keeping it growing. Once we found that looking at it too often causes it to wilt and we put it out in the back sun room (but not in too much direct sun), and established our routine of watering it at least twice per year but not more than three times, it began to thrive.

During our recent move the pots got upset and the poor plants laid on the bare ground for a few days, but we re-potted and thinned it and passed on starts to a half dozen people at the festival. The two pots we kept are a bit overcrowded; but in our new and smaller home we're still looking for the best place to establish their place.

At the first sign of dryness, just snap off a leaf and squeeze the juice where it's needed. If used quickly after minor burns, sunburn, cuts and scratches, and/or insect bites that show an allergicish rash it's an excellent all-purpose curative. And odor free.

John

"Here, in the high desert, I get so dry my skin can crack and bleed, too."

This sounds convincing until you realise that women here in exceedingly moist Manchester, UK have as many creams and lotions as well.

I make my own face lotion using a mixture of

vitamin E cream; aloevera gel, rosehip or hemp oil, about 1/3 parts each. I mix it with a fork until it's fluffy and add a couple of drops of lavender or sandalwood oil.

It makes a beautiful face cream.

but I also admit to having a huge collection of creams, mostly natural ones, and love using them.

I make up after sun 'mayonnaise' from roughly 50/50 aloe vera gel & wheatgerm oil, plus quite a bit of pure lavender oil too. Never yet worked out measurements, I just mix it up till it literally emulsifies like mayonnaise and turns into a smooth cream.

"But, if you feel like loving me
And, if you've got the lotion
I"ll second that emotion"

Men don't need anti aging cream....there is no way we will ever grow up....

I thought women bought all these lotions so they have unbreakable (well at least not glass) bottles to throw at their men....

Haven't had the chance or inclination to read every comment on this thread, (sorry) but in case anybody hasn't mentioned it yet.

Women and lotions...

Baby oil is preferable, but cheap non smelly olive oil will do, although the sheets are a bugger to wash afterwards...

The strange things you in advancing age.
Like lotions potions tinctures and goo
These are the things you love to use
From day to day you pay and pay
to ward off thoughts of your final day.
