Susan: I'm sorry; I didn't mean to be mean. In my family, at least, "Binna bareda bitcha" was a gently humorous remark on occasions where what you were looking for was at hand.

Now, if I had said "Takes eyes to look, but brains to see", that would have been another matter. %^)

Well, this thread says that the Feb 2007 edition was posted here at Mudcat, but I think the one we have online is newer - like late 2008 or early 2009. It's not downloadable as a single entity, however.

Yet Another Digital Tradition uses the Spring 2002 edition of the database. The one at 8notes.com isn't dated, but I think it's also 2002.

Hi, Bert - the download page says the latest edition available is 2002, but subsequent editions have been posted in HTML. There's another version coming soon, says Digital Tradition curator Dick Greenhaus. The Digital Tradition is a DOS program. I was able to run it on editions of Windows through Vista, but now I have 64-bit Windows 7 and it won't run directly.
It does run very nicely in a freeware program called DOSBOX, available at sourceforge.net

Perhaps it's a good lesson for us. Many of the people who come to Mudcat are not "regulars." They come here for music information, not for "social networking." Because of their presence, it's a good idea to use thread titles that actually describe the contents of a thread, and to refrain from using abbreviations that visitors won't understand.
Even "Digital Tradition" may be hard for visitors to understand, but at least people can Google that and get an explanation.

Be nice, Joe F, this place can be overwhelming for a newbie.

Welcome Cintya. The Digital Tradition (DT) is right here. You can search it from the Lyrics and Knowledge Search box above. The posted edition now has 10,300 songs and we hope to get a new version up soon, with 11,000 songs. Titles are not the best way to search for a song, since it is hard to know what title any song is entered under. You can search for phrases in the song - just beware not to use phrases with any "little words" in them, because the search here does not include those (a, the, etc.) and such a search will come back negative. Also beware US/UK spellings.

You should also mention that you can download your own copy from the Quick Links drop down at the top of the page. Select Download Your Own Copy, press the Go button and follow the instructions.

It is here. On this website main page see the little box top left that says lyrics and knowledge search. Type in a word or phrase. For example the word "gallows" will rpoduce a long list of songs in the DT with the word "gallows" somewhere in the song.

Next field down is DT lyrics, which searches titles by first letter.

Happy hunting.

Welcome, Bill

The Digital Tradition is a collection of the words to 6500 folksongs and the tunes to more than half of those. If you have the new version of this forum page, the search screen is at the top of the page. You can search for any word or phrase anywhere in the song. If you look for a phrase, put it in [square brackets]. Words posted to this forum find their way into digitrad eventually. New versions are compiled twice a year, with an additional 300-500 songs each time. It is also downloadable (takes hours) or you can mail us disks (4 formated high density disks in a stamped self-addressed mailer)
