Subject: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 05 Aug 01 - 09:56 AM Looking through the various threads on the Mudcat, I've been going through learning about where some of these songs come from. Here are some of these threads. Lots more there. 12 Days of Christmas Amazing Grace Amelia's Waltz Barbara Allen Barbara Allen Carrick Fergus Carrick Fergus Carrickfergus Casey Jones Chastity Belt Cotton Eyed Joe Dona Dona Fiddler's Green House of the Rising Sun I Wish I Wish Jimmy Cracked Corn John Henry Lavender Blue/Dilly Dilly Loch Lomand Londonderry Air/Danny Boy Merrily Kissed the Quaker's Wife Mingulay Boat Song My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean Peggy Gordon/Caledonia/When I First Went To Caledonia Roll me over in the Clover Rose of Allendale Scarborough Fair She Moved Through the Fair Shenandoah Show Me The Way To Go Home Soldier's Joy Spancil Hill Tom Dooley Trad British Isles' Songs Waly Waly Water is Wide, and other tie-ins Water Is Wide Water Is Wide Water Is Wide Water Is Wide Wild Colonial Boy Wild Mountain Thyme Wild Rover Yankee Doodle ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The alphabetised list has been moved to its own Song Origins PermaThread. You may continue to post additions to this thread, or its follow-up (when it gets too long) OR, post them directly into the PermaThread, but remember the PermaThread will be edited, so comments and contributions will not be permanent there, except the links added to the list. Thanks, again, George, this really is amazing! kat Search for "Found on Mudcat" threads |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: catspaw49 Date: 05 Aug 01 - 10:15 AM Now that we have a PermaThread, I will not be doing this consolidation. Sorry that we cannot undo the first few I did get to. You'll all be listed under "Catspaw" for these few, forever.*BG*
Thanks, kat
Been having a good time haven't you George? That's a really fine compilation too......I think I'll bookmark this one to use it as a reference for newcomer's on what can be found here. I always suggest that they do a forum search for old threads and this list will be another starting point I think. GREAT JOB!!!! Spaw ********************

Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: Peter T. Date: 05 Aug 01 - 11:23 AM Yes, George/Alice, you have caught a lot of them, Water is Wide, Carrickfergus, Greensleeves, Shenandoah, Tom Dooley, She Moved Through the Fair, etc. I think it is a great crosscutting index (you can see the scholarly version in the "I Wish, I Wish" thread, but this is way more fun). yours, Peter T. |

Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: Alice Date: 10 Aug 01 - 09:05 AM Kat, I guess it would make it easier to scan quickly, as an index, but I enjoy reading people's comments in the thread as it grows. It adds to the connectedness I feel in communicating with other people who also remember these old discussions. I would not like to see the links posted by different people and their comments deleted. The beauty of many of these threads is the commentary that builds around the information, and seeing the way different people participate in the search, not just the facts of the source. Alice |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: MMario Date: 10 Aug 01 - 10:17 AM so do BOTH! collate and alphabatize into the top - but leave the rest of the thread for commentary... |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Aug 01 - 11:08 AM Yes, katlaughing, I had noticed a couple of duplicates on stuff. I wasn't worried, for one or two. I enjoy seeing the participation. There were a couple which I had a problem with, so I re-placed them in a message later. But yes, there were two, that I remember, duplicates. As Alice and yourself said, the organic quality of the comments is interesting in itself. |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: UB Ed Date: 10 Aug 01 - 11:22 AM George, this is perfect!!!!!! Defintiely bookmarked. I suggest the Joe Clones group all the songs alphabetically at the top and retain the thread for the comments as Alice suggested. Here's another I found interesting as it has Clinton's and the Tequila version: Ed
|
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: UB Ed Date: 10 Aug 01 - 01:14 PM Kat, I'd leave the links intact with the comments as well as the alphabetical links on top if it makes little difference from a work or system storage perspective. Thanks for your efforts. Ed |

Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: Shields Folk Date: 10 Aug 01 - 08:00 PM This thread has entertained a number of folk. But what can we hope to achieve by listing and referencing the threads. We have it all in Mudcat. |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Aug 01 - 09:23 PM Shields Folk. My intent was to highlight some of the specific threads which talk about the origins of specific songs. So, these links are the quickest way of finding those threads whereby people looking for the origin of a specific song can find it easily. I had noticed that a number of people recently had started threads asking for where songs came from. A number of threads had shown several threads already existing in the forum which the person originating the request had missed, or not looked for. I got into the search for some of these threads, and they looked very interesting. Therefore I started this thread so I, and others could find them in one location. Rather than refreshing each one of them, which would have been a major job in itself, and rotated the threads too quickly. Also refreshing each of those threads on a regular basis would have been a pain. This way, only one thread needs to be refreshed to gain access to all these threads. Here are a couple more I was reading earlier. |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Aug 01 - 10:08 PM Oh? Never thought that. Most of these were older threads. I thought they had been harvested or in the DT already. So far, the alphabetized list looks really good! |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 10 Aug 01 - 10:09 PM Strike the Bell and the second If I Were a Blackbird needs fixing in the alphabetized list. |

Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: Alice Date: 10 Aug 01 - 11:08 PM Kat, the alphabetical list helps to quickly see what would be a duplicate for new links. Thanks. I just recorded Raggle Taggle Gypsy (my version) with a local fiddler, Tom Robison, accompanying. Here's the origins thread for Raggle Taggle Gypsy. |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 11 Aug 01 - 07:03 AM Don't know why we didn't put this in here before: Wabash Cannonball (also defines term Hobo) |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: Alice Date: 11 Aug 01 - 10:11 AM George, it's Wabash, (not Wabush). |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: Shields Folk Date: 11 Aug 01 - 10:31 AM Unless every thread relating to song origins is put on this list it will be incomplete. Searching the Digitrad and Forum Searches will bring up information which is missing from this list. The fact that people fail to search the Digitrad before posting suggests that they will post before consulting this thread.Perhaps what we do need is some sort of browse feature on the Digitrad and Forum Search. |
Subject: RE: Origins of: Found on Mudcat From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 11 Aug 01 - 11:36 AM I'm sorry about that, Alice! I was only half awake. I really do know better. Shield Folk, I don't know if we'd wind up with every song, but certainly many of the more popular ones.
