Well lets see, I am currently looking to do the same kind of thing and this is how I look at it...

1) www.visiv.co.uk -> Get the 30 Day trial - or real version if you want to spend money -> This will scan the music in, and save as MIDI.

2) www.anvilstudio.com/upgraden.htm -> Free unless you want extra features (like printing) -> Use this to transpose the score.

3) www.notation.com/MidiNotatePlayer.htm -> get the free (indefinite) version -> use this to print unless you paid for Anvil Studios...

I don't know about the others but Sharpeye is PC only. Smartscore is expensive... You could also try the links in the Mac permathread to see if anything turns up there.

Thanks everyone for all of the great suggestions and ideas! I will research all of these options and see what works. (I like the piano capo idea! ) I'm working with a few limitations....limited proficiency on keyboards (both kinds) and a MacIntosh computer. I'm hoping these programs are available in Mac format. (How about an electric keyboard - with built-in transpose? - probably cheaper than all that software!)

It's a nice trick, but I wouldn't call it magic yet.

SmartScore is the "replacement" for MidiScan, which has been around for quite a while. It's from the same makers. (MidiScan is no longer available.)

The scan recognition seems to be somewhat improved in SmartScore, but it still is less than perfect. I will take another look at it, but a previous look at SmartScore left me somewhat disappointed with what you can do with the score once you've scanned it in.

The stripped down versions of SmartScore are $99, and if all you want is a score for your own use it would probably suffice, although there are several $30 (and/or freeware) programs that make as good or better printed output. If you want decent control of the printed output, the Pro version is $399 - and still is a little limited. Better than the $30 program, but is it $260 better?

SmartScore now can output a .FIN file, which you can import into Finale (another $600?) to get a good printout, but that seems like overkill.

Your enthusiasm is appreciated, and we may both encourage KT to look at the trial download of SmartScore. It may be exactly what he's looking for.

Almost any notation program can change keys.
Almost any notation can produce MIDI files.
Almost any notation program can import MIDI files.
If you need to scan a sheet of music in, then SmartScore is a good - $$$ - way to do it.

For what was asked, were still talking about a $100 capo.

Granted, it's not cheap but it will do exactly what KT wants.

This looks like an interesting program, which claims to do it all, from scanning, etc. and, if you go to the bottom of the page there is a free trial version. I don't know how up to date this is, but it seems worth looking at: Music Publisher.

I may be wrong, but KT, I think you could make a midi of it in RealProducer (shareware), in the right key for you, then take that file into Notation Software (shareware) and it could print out sheet music in nothing flat for you, IF I remember correctly. I was amazed out how quickly and fairly accurately Notation Software produces written music from midi.

Consensus on the problem is that there are ways to "sort of" do what KT asked for, but there are no magic solutions that will take all of the work out of it.

MIDIScan and SharpEye are the two most commonly cited programs for conversion of scans to some form of notation. They work - up to a point, but will not eliminate all of the "handwork."

Jon, I agree. I've tried the trial version of Sharpeye 1.0 and, although it's limited to one staff, it does a good job. I've been working on scanning Bronson and I figure when I'm done, Sharpeye would be a good program to create MIDI's of all the tune variations.

Ivan, can you double check this for me. It seems to have a YES against MIDI editing. It doesn't look like it prints though.

For my money I'd rather invest in Sharpeye (which is shareware) and get an editor if needed.

Actually, Jon, it appears that the MIDI edition of Smartscore does nothing more than convert the printed score to MIDI. According to the site, it has no score printing or, for that matter, MIDI tweaking abilities built in. And the other $99 versions don't have MIDI capabilities, so it appears one would have to buy at least a couple of them (or Smartscore Songbook edition at $199) to do the complete job.

Guest Office - you may like to look at my program HARMONY, which transposes, and will also create Melodeon Tablature (Assuming that your Melodian is a squeeze-box). But you still have to get the tune into machine-readable format first. There are many traditional Irish and English tunes already available in abc format, which Harmony can import. A sample is provided with the software.

New features in the next version include a 'reel to hornpipe' converter, because so many hornpipes have been incorrectly transcribed as reels!

Nutty, certain editions of Smartscore including the $99 MIDI edition can do the whole thing. The full blown edition is somethng like $399.

Noteworthy will make sheet music from a midi which can be transposed within the program and printed out in a different key. You need to use an OCR program to create the midi from the scanned sheet music.
Thats creation in 2 stages ..... does anyone know a program that will do the whole thing?

I have tried a demo of a program called 'MIDISCAN' which converts scanned sheet music to MIDI, and it worked quite well, although like all OCR, you still have to make adjustments. Once in MIDI format, there are many programs which can transpose the music and print the score. But the right software may not be cheap!

Another alternative to scan the music in and get it into MIDI format would be Sharpeye". I think you would have use a MIDI editor for the rest.

While I'm here... I went to have a look at Cakewalk's site and see they now have an editor - Music Creator 2002 for $39. Maybe worth a look at for those who have chosen Noteworthy or a couple of others for reasons of cost. Looks like it deals with audio too.

I am wondering if there is a good software program that will transpose sheet music from one key to another. I know there are several that can do this if the sheet music is created on the program, but what I need is a program where you could scan a piece of music, touch a few keys, and VOILA!! It is rewritten in another key!!! I am often asked to sing for church services but so much of it is written for sopranos. I can transpose on the guitar, but the piano player can't. Anyone know if a program like this is out there? Thanks! KT
