Ever heard "On the Rim of the World" by Malvina Reynolds? It's the one that got me learning to yodel. A socially conscious yodeling song! Now, that's hard to beat.

I found it on Amazon.com on her "Ear to the Ground" CD, which I tried to link to here and created havoc in my posting. Anyway, you can get an MP3 of the song on Amazon, I think, for 99 cents.

There's a remarkable variety of yodeling on YouTube. I've been having a good time listening to the various types, but it frightens my cat.

I must say I enjoyed Bobbejaan more when I cast my eyes down and didn't look at his exaggerated expressions.)

My personal favorite song w/yodeling in it is 'Night Rider's Lament' by Mike Burton. 'Lovesick Blues' is another good one and always a crowd pleaser. I do a Tom Dundee(RIP) song called 'Cowboys Born Out Of Their Time' in which I insert a yodel part. Tom always told me he liked my version and was steamed he didn't think of adding a yodel part. RIP Tom, I really miss you.

Jessica woke up in the mornin after sendin a copy of her conversation to 15 people. She went into her bathroom and turned on the lights. She looked into her mirror and all of a sudden, the lights went out. She looked into the mirror and saw a person standing next to her with a long blood covered knife. She was holding it up over Jessica's head. Jessica looked around and felt around but felt nobody else in the room. She turned around and turned on the lights. She turned around and there was no person beside her or in the mirror anymore. Then she looked on the ground and saw something red. She bent down and felt it. It was wet and looked like blood.

Bloody Mary didn't hurt Jessica only because she sent the e-mail to 15 other people. Now you have to too or Bloody Mary might get you.

Send it to 14 or lower people, and you never know what might happen...

The Origin of Yodeling.

Have you ever wondered where and how yodeling began?

Many years ago a man was traveling through the mountains of Switzerland. Nightfall was rapidly approaching and he had nowhere to sleep. He went up to a farmhouse and asked the farmer if he could spend the night. The farmer told him that he could sleep in the barn.

The farmer's daughter came down from upstairs and asked her father, "Who was that man going into the barn?"

"That's some fellow traveling through," said the farmer. "He needed a place to stay for the night, so I said that he could sleep in the barn.

"Perhaps he is hungry." said the daughter. And she prepared him a plate of food and took it out to the barn. About an hour later, the daughter returned, her clothing disheveled and straw in her hair. Straight up to bed she went.

The farmer's wife was very observant. She then suggested that perhaps the man was thirsty. So she fetched a bottle of wine, took it out to the barn, and she too did not return for an hour! Her clothing was askew, her blouse buttoned incorrectly and her hair all messed up. She also headed straight to bed.

The next morning at sunrise the man in the barn got up and continued on his journey, waving to the farmer as he left. When the daughter awoke and learned that the visitor was gone, she broke into tears.

"How could he leave without even saying goodbye," she cried, "after we made such passionate love last night?"

"What?" shouted the farmer and angrily ran out of the house looking for the man, who by now was halfway up the mountain. The farmer screamed up at him, "I'm gonna get you! You had sex with my daughter!"

The man looked back down from the mountainside, cupped his hand next to his mouth, and yelled out, ......

Back at Record Lady.... they're everywhere! In 'Ding Dong Bells' (Kenny Roberts) you've got a smooth vocal that slips into a chiming bell... that slips into a yodel. Amazing. Also a cute lyric. He refers to "Those ding-dong bells," but I think it's a euphemism for those g-d bells....

It's an accumulating resource to people interested in the subject of the compilation-- a catalogue of sorts. They emerge over time as people think of new ideas or examples.

I think I *may* have "She Taught Me to Yodel." I heard it myself in the late 40's (?) or early 50's I guess, loved it, have been looking for it. But it's going to take a real dig thru my tapes. E-mail me or Bill D (my husband, who gets on Mudcat a lot oftener than I do) if you haven't heard in a week or so.

Can you find and check a list of song titles on Kathy Fink and Marcy Marxer's CD's and tapes? They do a lot of good old yodeling songs.

June 18-19 will be the second annual Tribute to Patsy Montana at the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, Arkansas. She was a native of Jessieville, AR. Last year's special guests were Liz Masterson and Sean Blackburn, Blue Stem, and Michael Losey Montana. I don't know yet who is scheduled to be there this year.

The Elton Britt Tribute is scheduled for July 30-31. He was born in Marshall, AR. Kerry Christensen and The Hammer Sisters were there last year.

Both events are well worth attending, but then so is just about any night during the season, April through October.

I know you didn't ask and you probably already know how good the original Sons of the Pioneers were but if not I would recomend a recording of remasters from 1935-38. The band is Len Slye (Roy Rogers)Bob Nolan, Hugh and Carl Farr, and Tim Spencer. This was before Roy became King of the Cowboys, Their harmony yodels made anything else of the day sound bland. Especially on "Way Out There". The Farr brothers are so good you would swear it was Django Reinhardt (sp?) and Stephan Grappelli (sp?)

Spent many a happy hour playing snooker in a bar in Monroe back in the 40's & 50's. also filled up on Swiss cheese. Had an indoor rifle league during the winters back then. Monroe, Madison, Janesville, Beloit, County Line(Evansville mostly) and Rockford, IL. Host team served the food and the Monroe cheesmakers in the crowd brought some of the best.

Thanks for the link to New Glarus. Sure it has polkas, but the really big festivals are the Heidi Festival in early summer and the Wilhelm Tell Festival on Labor Day weekend. That 's when the big outdoor theater productions (of Heidi and Wm. Tell) take place and the locals all wear Swiss costumes down to their knees so they don't have to change outfits for the evening show. Cheese Days, alas, is not a New Glarus event. Cheese Days is celebrated in Monroe (about 15 miles south of New Glarus on Hiway 69) in the fall of alternate years. The "modern" Cheese Days was ressurected in the mid 1960's. I only know this because I graduated from Monroe High School in 1965 and my dad continued to live there until 1974.

This brings us to Shake Rag Street in Mineral Point, Wis! It was lead (aka mineral) mining that brought the first group of settlers to Mineral Point. Many of the first group dug into the hjillside and lived in the "badger" holes they dug, giving Wisconsin is Badger State nickname. In a few years Cornish hard rock miners moved in and brought their superior technology and experience. Shake Rag Street got its name from the habit of the miners wives going out of their houses along the street and waving pieces of cloth to their husbands on the opposite hillside to summon them to eat. The street is a tourist attraction today and some of the old Cornish houses have been restored.

I guess it is one of my duties in life to badger "Badger Joe" about the badger holes in the "Badger State Lore" file in his software. It seems that if you've got a computer on the left coast that was programed from the right coast, hten the middle coast sometimes gets squished.

I've just been listening to a CD by Jimmie Rodgers 'the singing cowboy' just for the yodels..and here it is as a thread...mmmm.Spooky...x file material.

So people still actually yodel out there without wearing liederhosen....Unfortunately Gary there are no words with the CD but Jimmie sounds like he's singing 'and your old lady to !' to a couple of them.

I am still attempting to get words for yodeling tunes.. I've laid in the weeds for months now, but finally got to Mudcat again. Surely there is more than Joe and I who are interested in Yodeling... Is anyone out there the least bit knowledgeable about the words to those songs? Or at least can you provide a site where I can find them? Oh dee Oh lay dee who! Gary
