Cap'n, the Listen Again feature for the MH show can be reached on the BBC Radio 2 website. I hardly ever hear the MH show 'live' as I'm usually out on Wed nights, so I'll be listening "again" to Nic (session tonight so won't be able to hear it, as usual).

This link should run the audio stream in your default audio player, which will allow you to navigate freely forward or backwards through the program rather than just forward in 5/15 minute chunks as per the BBC player.

funny ,I dont recall Nic ever being booked at Dartford Folk club,Tony Rose used to get booked there,and I believe I saw Carthy there once,but I dont recall Nic ever playing there.

well thank god, I dont listen to radio 2 anymore, cant anybody sing any more, apart from the demon barbers.
North cregg, murdering SLIABH LUCHRA MUSIC,denis and julia murphy would turn in their grave[N cregg are clueless].
Seth lakeman[pop singer,waste of time].
some of the blues singers were ok.
the three part harmony group sang nicely in tune, but no passion.
what a waste of an hour,and no nic jones until next week.
not one singer of tradituional music had any idea about interpretation,its pathetic,

I'm glad Dick liked The Demon Barbers in last week's show doing Edward but he must surely have missed Johnny Dickinson doing The Jacobite's Farewell with slide guitar. Two very fine interpretations of traditional song.

I really enjoyed the programme. I think that is the main idea of a radio programme; to entertain the listener.

Those of you who wish to gripe because it wasn't exactly as you would like, need to fuck off or grow up.

You moan when there's no Folk on radio, and you moan when there is. Go figure! (as our American friends might say)

It wasn't anything like exactly what I would have wanted and I'm not going to follow either of your suggestions, Guest Ed. That 'blink-and-you'll-miss-it' muffled reference to the four unavailable Trailer albums could have been explained. And Krusby could have been edited out or a least reduced to a clip so that Nic's full version of The Blind Harper could have run. And the full version of Warlike Lads Of Russia wouldn't have gone amiss. And it could have been longer. In fact it could have been a 10-part series. Cos what do we get next week? Tom Paxton. So I'll continue to gripe. Thank you.

Like a lot, I gave up listening to the Mike Harding program, when I
got continually frustrated at his inept comments (Mentioned by others)
his persistant gibbering (his own word) and his obvious predeliction
for Nancy (Griffiths) Nothing wrong with Nancy, she is lovely BUT..
never mind!

The final straw was the 25th aniversary program for Sandy Denny, when
Mr Gibber-a-lot talked over the end of "Who Knows where the time goes"
instead of giving it the 5 seconds of silence it richley deserves as
being just about the best modern folk song ever..

Nic Jones... What can say, its all been said already, pity the BBC
could not have got Jim Lloyd back JUST for this one program ...

I think I'll have a week listening to my Jim Lloyd recordings from the
nineties.. Folk, that was real ...

TO COUNTESS RICHARD,yes Johnny Dickinson was good too,but Damiens singing was in my opinion the best by a country mile,GOOD Ornamentation, a revivalist singer who sounds like he,s listened to traditional singing.

Absolutley extraordinary singer and guitarist and I think the programme did him justice in terms of samples from his recordings and the things that people said about him. Also a great sense of what might have been?

A clear reminder of how powerful traditional music can be and how different it is to other no less imortant forms of music.

We probably wont here Nick live again but you can do what Nick did last year in Otley and hear The Duncan McFarlane Band. Duncan will be the first to say he is not Nick but for a taste of really thrilling traditional and written music the DMBs have more than a little of the power, complexity and sheer excitement of Nick.

...but I wouldn't give up on hearing Nic 'live' again.

He can still sing reet well IMHO - hear his recent recording of Rakish Young Fellow on the latest 'Halliard' album.
For those that don't know.....
there are two retrospective Halliard CDs available (google... Mollie Music).
The latest one features some bonus tracks recorded last year (some grand playing from Nic's son Joe on there! - and fine new contributions from Dave & Nigel.

I have every hope Nic will sing some more yet! ;) ;)

I also noticed a change in Nics style of singing,between the first lps and the last.Although I think penguin eggs is a great lp,I preferred his more ornamented, earlier style of singing.

Captain Birdseye, I assume by Dartford Folk Club you mean that in The Railway Hotel? I remember Nic Jones but I think it's from The Coach House at Farningham, which is also where I saw/heard Tony Rose. I was there from 71 to 73, how about you?

yes ,I reckon I was going to both clubs,About 1969 to 1973.I was a floorsinger at both clubs ,I didnt learn the concertina till 1976,But pete hicks and pete chopin encouraged me a lot,Farningham was a great club,both fridays and sundays were packed,and you had to be good to get a floor spot.
I remember getting there early once [it was the summer time]and there was this old guy who had come from shropshire by public transport,waiting outside the pub ,so when it openEd we had a good old chat and a couple of pints,that was the first time I met Fred Jordan.Farningham was great,Breezy and Billy Bob,and tito gobbi of the balls pond road,all used to go there,Those were the days.

Nic Jones certainly DID appear at Dartford Folk Club several times when it was at the Railway Hotel.

It was quite an upsetting alarm on another thread when you claimed that Don Shepherd (another performer from Nic's era) had died five or six years ago. Don is most certainly alive.

The programme was disappointing, IMO. Just wheel in a few 'celebrities' such as other Radio 2 DJs, to enthuse about Nic, and play tracks from Penguin Eggs in between their riveting comments. Hardly cutting edge. And if I want to hear Penguin Eggs I have the album and can play it whenever I want (which I do, quite often).

Only two complete tracks from Penguin Eggs were played: Canadee-i-o and Little Pot Stove. And two short clips: Planxty Davis (which is always played anyway, albeit talked across), and Courting Is A Pleasure.

The rest was from In Search Of . . . and Unearthed. from The Halliard's The Last Goodnight, from Shirley Collins' No Roses, from an archive live session, from 3 of the 4 'lost' Trailer vinyls Ballads & Songs, Noah's Ark Trap & From The Devil To A Stranger, and from the new Topic CD Game Set Match.

Had more been played from the Trailer vinyls (including Nic Jones and Bandoggs), to which I assume you are referring when you say you wanted something more 'cutting edge', just think of who you would be benefitting. Yes, the rights owner who would scoop in the royalties.

If you think it's sour to mention that a huge and valuable catalogue of both revival and traditional material in the Leader/Trailer archive has been hidden away for the past quarter century, depriving both the artists of income and the world of the opportunity to hear it is 'sour', then 'sour' I am.

As any fule no, I'm never an apologist for Smoothops. But, other than omit the dubious 'tribute' material, I really don't see how they could, in the circumstances, have made a very much better programme.
