Oh, I'm sorry for having forgotten to post the text.

The text can be found here (although the spelling differs a little bit). Another version exists, where "meydele" (girl) is replaced by "yingele" (boy) (e.g. here)

Somehow the links don't seem to work, so I'll just post the addresses without hypertexting them:
The text with "meydele" is here: http://www.klesmer-musik.de/di_mame.htm
The text with "yingele" is here: http://mandysmischpoche.com/di_mame.htm

The first (http://www.klesmer-musik.de/di_mame.htm) is from a German Website, and German transliteration of Yiddish differs from the way English-speaking people transliterate it.

Originaltext:

di mame iz gegangen in mark arayn nach koyln,
hot zi mir gebrackt a meydele fun poyln.
mit di shwartse eygeleck, oy ketsele du mayns.

di mame iy gegangen in mark arayn nach kroyt,
hot zi mir gebrackt a meydele fun boyd,
mit di vayse tseyndeleck, oy ketsele du mayns.

ikh hob gegezn mandlen ick hob getrunken vayn,
ikh hob gelibt a meydele un ken on ir nisht sayn,
mit di shvartse hereleck, oy ketsele du mayns.

The second (http://mandysmischpoche.com/di_mame.htm) is also from a German Website, but it has an English translation - and a nice recording.

Di Mame
Jiddisches Volkslied

Hot zi mir gebracht a jingele fun Poyln.

Di mame iz gegangen in mark arayn noch kroyt,
Hot zi mir gebracht a jingele fun boyt.

Ich hob gegesn mandlen, ich hob getrunken vayn,
Ich hob gelibt a jingele, un kon on im nit zayn.

My mother went to market to buy some coal,
She brought me back a lovely boy from Poland.
Oh what a boy he was, how handsome and how fine,
Ah, those black eyes of his, ah, you kitten of mine.

My mother went to market to buy some cabbage,
She brought me back a handsome boy just off a coach.
Oh what a boy he was, how beautiful and fine,
Ah, those white teeth of his, ah, you kitten of mine.

I have been eating almonds, I have been drinking wine,
And I have loved a boy and could not part from him.
O what a boy he was, how lovely and how fine,
Ah, those black locks of his, ah, you kitten of mine.

Here's what I found from Ruth Rubin:

Di Mame Iz Gegangen

1 Di mame iz gegangen in mark arayn noch koyln,
Hot zi mir gebracht a yingele fun Poyln.

2 Di mame iz gegangen in mark arayn noch kroyt,
Hot zi mir gebracht a yingele fun boyd.

3 Ich hob gegesn mandlen, ich hob getrunken vayn,
Ich hob gelibt a yingele, un kon on im nit zayn.

1 My mother went to market for to buy some coal,
She brought me back a handsome lad from Poland.
Oh what a lad he is, how manly and how fine—
Ah those black eyes of his, ah, that kitten of mine!

2 My mother went to market for to buy some cabbage,
She brought me back a handsome lad, just off the coach.
Oh what a lad he is, how manly and how fine—
Ah those white teeth of his, ah, that kitten of mine!

3 I've been eating almonds, I've been drinking wine,
I'm in love with a handsome lad, and for him I pine.
Oh what a lad he is, how manly and how fine—
Ah those black curls of his, ah, that kitten of mine!

Source: A Treasury of Jewish Folksong, Ruth Rubin (1950), pp. 54-55.

Unfortunately, Rubin does not give any background information. Tune available on request, but I didn't find chords and can't figure them out myself. The song (and probably chords) is also in Volume 1 of the Anthology of Yiddish Folksongs. I ordered a set from Israel several weeks ago, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Thanks for replying the lyrics Joe Offer. Next time I'll spare you the work ;)

I've still been trying to work out the chords and this is my (interim) result:

Di [Am]mame iz gegangen in mark arayn noch koyln,
Hot zi mir gebracht a [E7]yingele fun Poyln.

Greetings

P.S.: Should I have posted the whole lyrics with the chords here or is one verse ok?

Sorry I missed your message until now, Sylfija. If you're posting chords for a song, one verse is just fine - but if we haven't had the lyrics posted, then please also post the lyrics, preferably without chords because it makes reading easier. Even better is if you can e-mail a tune ot me for posting.
-Joe Offer-

Here's the tune from the lyrics I copied from the Ruth Rubin book:
