Subject: Surka From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 12 Dec 07 - 05:13 PM On the Odessa link there is an MP3 of the Jewish version- Surka. Surka is a nickname for Sarah. Once Rabinovich and I had some dealings, Rabinovich wanted a drink; why shouldn't the poor Jew drink, if he doesn't have any urgent affairs? In order to get a drink and have some Tzimess (a Jewish carrot dessert), we went to a dirty little diner; Surka was sitting there, underneath her skirt she concealed a heavy-loaded pistol. So as not to get caught, we decided to leave, but to get revenge on Sura for this: In a dark alley by the synagogue we decided to shoot Surka. We called for Moysha, Moysha loaded his pistol. in a dark alley by the synagogue Moysha delivered the following speech: "Hello, my Surka, hello, dear, hello, my Surka, and farewell! you turned in Aaron and Solomon - and now you get an olive (bullet)!" Rabinovich took out his gun with the misshapen muzzle, pointed it at Surka; cocked one eye, and shut the other, with it against his cheek, he pulled the trigger. Rabinovich shot, missed by a little, and sort of hit me. I lay in the hospital, but that louse Rabinovich with Surka has been drinking four days straight! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 12 Dec 07 - 04:17 PM Murka, apparently, was a generic name for a gangster's moll. This is what Sokolsky sings: Znayetye'l vy Murku, Murku doroguyu? pomnish li ty, Murka, nash roman? kak s toboy lyubili, vremya provodili, i sovsyem nye znali pra obman. kak-ta bylo dyelo, vypit zaxotel ya i zashyol v shikarny ryestoran. vizhu - v zalye bara, tam tantzuyet para: Murka i kakoy-to yuny frant! Do you know Murka, darling Murka? do you, Murka, remember our affair? how we loved each other, passed our time together, and I never knew about your treachery. once I had some business, and wanted a drink so I went into a posh restaurant. in the bar I saw, a couple dancing: Murka and some sort of young buck (or dandy)! I ran up to her, grabbed her by the arm: "We need to talk!" but she laughed, she pressed closer to the guy, "We have nothing to talk about" she said. Murka, what's all this about? what didn't you have? did I not clothe you? hats and jackets, rings and bracelets, did I not buy you these? Hello, my Murka, hello, dear, hello, my Murka, and farewell... you loved me, but now've forgotten about me, so for this take a bullet! |

Subject: RE: Odessa From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 10 Dec 07 - 07:16 PM Leonid Utyosov (Utesev) is one of the prime examples of Odessan music. He helped introduce jazz to the Soviet Union. It is very easy to get a hold of his songs on disc, including MP3 discs with all of them. I'll look through some sites, see what I can find. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 10 Dec 07 - 06:03 PM Funny, I get a longer sample this time ... but still only one verse, not the complete song. I wonder if it's because I'm accessing with a Mac? Anyway, Volgadon, since you can hear the whole thing, would you be willing to transcribe it in phonetic "sounds-like" Russian as you did for the other version? (Since alas printed Cyrillic doesn't work via this board?) I'd be very interested to see this different version. Thanks! Bob P.S. By the way, I'm getting more and more fascinated by the music of Odessa. The vigorous clash of cultures there seems to have yielded unusually vibrant songs in a variety of traditions. In addition to its Russian songs, pre-WWII Odessa's also one of the finest sources of the Greek rembetika of the 1920s and after, as shown in the excellent CDs from Greek Archives. It also produced some fine Turkish music, and I would guess Odessa Jewish music might be equally interesting. Evidently Odessa was a musical melting pot like Constantinople during that period. Do you know of any CD reissues of 1920s-30s recordings of Odessa-based Russian singers and musicians? |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 09 Dec 07 - 04:12 PM I found a superb MP3 of a different version of Murka (do you know Murka - znayetye li vy Murku), where she is merely an unfaithful mistress. Konstantin Sokolsky performs it in the cabaret style popular during the 30s. Sokolsky's Murka |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 08 Dec 07 - 03:50 PM No. It started life in 1920s Odessa as "Lyubka" (diminutive of Lyubov- Love) about someone doing in an unfaithful lover, and only sometime during the 30s, when it left Odessa, did it become the song posted above. The folk-process (for lack of a better term) at work. Take a good song and make it more exciting. There were also variants known as "Masha". The name Murka for Muscovites conjured up an image of devious double-dealing agents, the MURs, which probably caused the change in story-line. There is an excellent miniseries about the MURs, the Age of Mercy or The Metting Place Cannot be Changed (Myesto vstrechi izmenit nyelza). In one of the scenes the protagonist plays Murka in order to convince the gang he has infiltrated that he was a pianist in Moscow night clubs. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: bobad Date: 08 Dec 07 - 03:36 PM "Yes definitely. "U" in Russian is pronounced "oo" ... as the message above says, it's pronounced "Moorka" ... nothing to do with murk" I am aware of this as I speak a Slavic language, my suggestion of Murky was based not on the pronunciation but rather on the spelling and context of the song. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 08 Dec 07 - 03:27 PM Yes definitely. "U" in Russian is pronounced "oo" ... as the message above says, it's pronounced "Moorka" ... nothing to do with murk. (Though there was plenty of murk in her environment and her life.) Volgadon, I'm curious: do you have any idea whether there could be any aspects of real life story behind this song? It sounds so much as if taken from life ... I know that by itself doesn't mean it really happened, but it would be fascinating if there was a real original identifiable behind the figure of Murka. Bob |

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: bobad Date: 08 Dec 07 - 02:14 PM Hmm, "Murky" might be a good transliteration. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 08 Dec 07 - 02:10 PM It's a diminutive of Maria, and a standard name for the girl in songs of the underworld. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: bobad Date: 08 Dec 07 - 12:41 PM Does the name Murka have a meaning that might translate into English? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 08 Dec 07 - 12:31 PM Nothing wrong with a recomposition, there are dozens upon dozens of rewrites in Russian alone. I read something really interesting, that Red Army units made up of convicts and other criminal elements used Murka as their march. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 08 Dec 07 - 07:46 AM Volgadon, thanks for putting up the literal translation. I think that's especially important because of the liberties I took with mine, which diverged in places. Really it was more of a recomposition. Everyone deserves an opportunity to see (and hear) Murka as close to the original as possible. I know I said it before, but ... what a great song! Bob |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Volgadon Date: 06 Dec 07 - 10:58 AM A fun translation! Here is an unsingable translation by yours truly. If anyone wants to work out their own, this should help. Urkagan, urka - A cutthroat. Malina - A den or hideaway for bandits. Feather, feather pen - a knife. Dura - a pistol. MUR - A governmental department in Moscow for aprehending criminals, but also shorthand for any gvt agent. Torgsin - A very posh department store in the 30s. Maslina - A bullet (lit. black olive). Lyegavy - A policeman (lit. toad). The moon shines in the sky, silent sleeps the malina, but inside a council gathered: These are urkagans, evil hooligans, called together an urgent commitee. The speech was delivered by moll, her name it was Murka cunning and adroit (or should that be sly & cunning) she was; (even evil urkas were all afraid of Murki who led a criminal's life) All quite sudden, we endured disaster, and police raids began, many of our own were lost; how to find out quickly, who became a stoolie, so that were punished for their betrayal? As soon as we discover something, as soon as we hear anything, as soon as the person can be sniffed out - in some dark alley we'll write with a pen or out will come our dura and away with them! As we had decided to carry out the deed, a drink was very needed, we went into a posh restaraunt. there Murka was sitting with an agent from MUR, and in the holster lay a gun. We decided to get out of there and not hang around, but we would take revenge on Murka: in some dark alley, where the urkas prowl, we laid an ambush for Murka. Hello, my Murka, hello, dearie, hello, my Murka, and farewell! you turned in all of our malina - and now, whore, answer for it! Murka, what made you do it, what didn't you have? did I not clothe you? rings and bracelets, skirts and jackets did I not loot for you? Once you wore shoes the Torgsin lacquered shoes to the Bolshoi Theatre but now you wear beat up galoshes to the Bosoy (not sure what is ment here, bosoy itself means barefoot)! Hello, my Murka, hello, dearie, hello, my Murka, and farewell! you turned in all are Malina - and now take a maslina! A black crow cries, my heart weeps, my heart weeps and mourns: in some dark alley, where the Urkas prowl, Murka lies bloody. See you lay here Murka, in a leather overcoat, staring up at the clouds; what caused you to run around with with lyegavys and go to work for the government? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Add: Murka (Russian) From: GUEST,Bob Coltman Date: 05 Dec 07 - 06:53 PM I totally love this song, it's one of the best. A while ago I tried a loose translation (taking some liberties to make it work in English), based on my sketchy knowledge of Russian from an intensive year's course all of forty years ago. Here it is, and I hope you'll find it singable to that wild gangster tune. Bob MURKA Highly approximate English translation by Bob Coltman Moon is slowly rising, and the town is drowsing, But the crooks are meeting in the night, We're the Urkagani, mean and tough and scrawny, For our kind of deeds we need no light. Our chief she is a looker, goes by the name of Murka, Crafty and audacious as a guy, Even the toughest bosser knows better than to cross her, While we rob and steal and eye her on the sly. All at once we're wound up, there's a police roundup, Lot of us get chucked into the can, How'd they come to raid us? Which one has betrayed us? Who's the stoolie that tipped off the Man? First things first, I'm thinkin', let's do a little drinkin', We drop in the Shikarni restaurant, There sits Murka chatting, and so gently patting A police agent's hand ---- what more d'you want? Down in that dark alley where we used to dally, Back in that tiny cul-de-sac, Okay, this is it, man, who will be our hitman To go and take down Murka in this whack? Hello, darling Murka, hello, you little smirker, Hello, darling Murka, aren't you sly? You're the damned impostor, you're the double crosser, You've betrayed our gang, I wonder why. Murka, I don't get it, how'd you come to let it Happen? Damn, I dressed you like a queen, Wedding ring and bracelets, sexy skirts and jackets, What kind of gold-digger have you been? You used to wear revolting galoshes that were molting, You carried a bucket in your hand, I gave you black market high heels like a starlet, Patent leather, of the Bolshoi brand. Now, my darling Murka, now, you little shirker, You've been such a mistress of disguise, You have plowed us under, it's your final blunder, Here's a bullet right between your eyes. The black raven's dying, and my heart is crying, And my thoughts are screaming in my head, In this very alley where we used to dally, Murka lies all crumpled, cold and dead. Murka, there you're lying, take your sweet time dying, In that lousy trenchcoat like a sack, There's our darling bleeding, not what we were needing, Off we go, not even looking back. |
