Subject: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Bob the hat Date: 07 Jun 10 - 07:21 AM Hello, I thought I'd start a thread about bands that you liked but have vanished from the scene. What happened to Crucible? I saw them at my local Folk club and at Bromyard, great four part harmonies, tunes with a rough edge to them. Wasn't quite sure about the girl with the pipes but overall it was a great sound. Have they stopped performing? Their website has no dates on it. Bob |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Ed Date: 07 Jun 10 - 07:27 AM So you want a list of every band that people liked but has split up? The Beatles |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Bob the hat Date: 07 Jun 10 - 07:36 AM Maybe I didn't make myself clear... I meant bands that have gone quiet and there has been no announcement of why. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Dave Hanson Date: 07 Jun 10 - 08:01 AM The Invisible Men. Dave H |

Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Steve Hunt Date: 07 Jun 10 - 08:04 AM As far as I know, Crucible just took a break while Jess and Richard Arrowsmith were busy having their baby. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: theleveller Date: 07 Jun 10 - 08:19 AM In 1972 Mr Fox disbanded after less than 2 years together, and just before Bob and Carole Pegg split up. Great band and superb songs by Bob Pegg who, I believe, is now a professional storyteller. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: SteveMansfield Date: 07 Jun 10 - 08:33 AM Wasn't quite sure about the girl with the pipes but overall it was a great sound. Well that just shows how different people like different things, because for me it's Helena's pipes that made/make all the difference in lifting Crucible's sound out of the ordinary. There isn't enough woodwind (and unusual instrumentation generally) in the current English folk scene IMNSHO, but that's maybe a subject for another thread ... |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Bob the hat Date: 07 Jun 10 - 08:45 AM Ah, so they're not disbanded. Actually, her piping is good. It was the singing and patter that grated with me. As you say, there is a lack of unusual instruments on the scene. I just said pipes as it distinguised her from the other girl in the band. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 07 Jun 10 - 12:33 PM The Gin Blossoms? I haven't heard of any news about them in years. They were a good band. |

Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Herga Kitty Date: 07 Jun 10 - 07:53 PM But Crucible aren't just the band, they're the singing concert band version.... 3 members of Crucible (not including Helena the piper) are playing in Hekety Kitty |

Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,MC Fat (at work) Date: 09 Jun 10 - 05:25 AM Crucible are still going strong. Jess & Richard do have a new baby. They apparantly did a storming gig at the Royal at Dungworth recently |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Don Day Date: 09 Jun 10 - 07:22 AM Maybe Dave Sutherland can remember what happened to Brown Gilroy's Giro. I cant. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Dave Sutherland Date: 09 Jun 10 - 07:40 AM Brown Gilroy's Giro - resident band at South Tyne Folk and Blues c1969/1970. What happend to them? Well last I heard Matty Scott was living in the wilds of Northumberland near Wooler, Alan Rutter was still in Southampton and singing around the clubs there. Terry Kelly lives near Newark and has become a bluesman of no small talent; I am down here in Nottingham and you are in South Durham. Maybe if one of these proposed STF&B re-unions ever come off we might meet again. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: naughtyforty Date: 09 Jun 10 - 07:59 AM The Iron Horse as a band retired in 2001 but apparently continue to be at the forefront of the traditional music scene in other projects. Anyone know what happened to The Island Girls - a group from Canada. I saw them at Warwick Folk Festival a few years ago but can't find any info on them now. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Dave the Gnome Date: 09 Jun 10 - 08:16 AM ROAM broke up but we still see Colid Rudd periodicaly at Swinton. DeG |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: sharyn Date: 09 Jun 10 - 10:06 AM I had one cut on a compilation CD by the Blue Rubies ("When You Were Mine"). I could find no trace of them even with an internet search. My favorite defunct band was Out of the Rain, a San Francisco Bay Area band who recorded traditional and original songs in three-part harmony. All of the members are still around, although farther flung than they used to be. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: maple_leaf_boy Date: 25 Jun 10 - 04:17 PM Is the Shawn Mullins band still around? I just thought of them today. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GavDav Date: 25 Jun 10 - 04:47 PM Crucible have been having a bit of a break from heavy duties whilst Jess and Rich had their gorgeous baby Lucy. We did a couple fo great gigs recently at the Royal at Dungworth and Raunds Festival. We're putting together some Autumn tour dates at the moment and should be back to doing a lot more regular stuff in 2011 (booking now). I've been working on a solo album, and there are some other spin off projects afoot. We promise to revamp the website! Still, it is nice to know someone misses you enough to care :) Gav |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Frank Phillips Date: 25 Jun 10 - 09:47 PM I picked up the first CD in 2008 while on Vancouver Island but it appears they are not together anymore. If you google "island girls courtenay" you should get the following link. http://www.cypherconsulting.com/nicollmusic/IG/islandgirls.html Frank |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Alan Rutter Date: 12 Jul 10 - 09:14 AM Brown Gilroy's Gyro was usually spent on the way home, quicker than you could say - mine's a pint ! |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Essex girl Date: 12 Jul 10 - 10:11 AM Anyone know if Three Sheets to the Wind (U.K) Still do anything. Tryind to get some news of Geoff Higginbottom? |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Ray Date: 12 Jul 10 - 11:47 AM Ask Ken Thompson about Geoff - Ken manages Hobgoblin in Manchester so he should be easy enough to track down. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: banksie Date: 12 Jul 10 - 12:14 PM Proper Little Madams were very good but disbanded, I believe. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: The Sandman Date: 12 Jul 10 - 12:43 PM The New Mexborough English Concertina Quartet, believed lost in the Mexborough triangle , there ghostly concertinas still be heard stil playing Colonel Bogey 25 years later on dank november evenings |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Tug the Cox Date: 12 Jul 10 - 01:28 PM Anyone remeber armony grouop'Arkies Toast?' |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: banksie Date: 12 Jul 10 - 02:18 PM And of course there was Eric - based around the late Nigel Chippendale and Ralph Jordan |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Old Vermin Date: 12 Jul 10 - 06:57 PM Ask Surreysinger about Ralphie. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Old Vermin Date: 12 Jul 10 - 06:58 PM Or doesn't Mr Jordan come in here anyway? |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Surreysinger Date: 12 Jul 10 - 08:01 PM Mr Jordan does indeed post on here (as Ralphie) ...and I'm sure you can ask him about what he's been doing since then if you want to. In his current absence though, I would say though that, as Eric was a trio, they were not actually "centred round Nigel Chippendale (sic) and Ralph Jordan" ... I sadly never got the chance to see them in live action, but it's my understanding that Colin Thompson was very much an integral part of the band and the overall threesome. PS It's actually Nigel Chippindale ... "i" not "e" :-) |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST Date: 13 Jul 10 - 01:46 AM The Vuvuzela orchestra is now, sadly, a blast from the past... |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Geoff the Duck Date: 13 Jul 10 - 03:25 AM The Mexborough Concertina Band Club is still in Mexborough. They have been brewing their own beer for maybe 20 years now. Had a few pints the other weekend - Bengal Tiger and Old Dark Attic - excellent. Quack! GtD. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Ralphie Date: 13 Jul 10 - 03:40 AM Thanks for remembering ERIC. Yes definitely a band of equals, All three of us inputting ideas. The sad death of Nigel obviously ended the fun, otherwise we'd probably still be going. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Dave Sutherland Date: 13 Jul 10 - 03:38 PM Proper Little Madams were a very clever and inventive trio of young ladies who played around the East Midlands in the early eighties and I really thought that they would be a great success. Hey Mr Rutter - why not join Mudcat then Don and I could catch up with you? |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: oggie Date: 13 Jul 10 - 04:44 PM English Tapestry - three part harmonies as good as any other band before or after. Steve |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Tug the Cox Date: 13 Jul 10 - 08:24 PM Oggie, remember ET well. Came from Cambridge, I think, came on tours of London including Catford and farningham on successive nights. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Herga Kitty Date: 14 Jul 10 - 02:32 AM Tug - there was an earlier thread about Arky's toast - whom, IIRC, I booked for the Heritage club at Oxford in the summer of 1972.... Kitty |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: GUEST,Alan Rutter Date: 15 Jul 10 - 06:39 AM Dave - I'd love to join the forum but whenever I try to register I keep getting a syntax error message and the help section is unavailable. All suggestions welcomed. Emailed Don last week on the address he gave but haven't heard anything from him. |
Subject: RE: Bands that have disapeared From: Dave Sutherland Date: 15 Jul 10 - 12:17 PM Alan- Google www.tigerfolk.com if you want to contact me. |
